I rested my head on my hands and focused on the calming colours of the sunset. I could see it from my office window, it was a Friday night so the lines were quiet.. giving me time to think about anything and everything... about my job mainly. I loved being able to help people but part of me was always fearing that one day I wouldn't be able to save someone.
RING RING
Running my hands through my black quiff I picked up the phone pulling myself away from my thoughts.
"Hello, You're talking to Phil. What's your name?"
"why do you need to know that...Phil." The callers voice was monotone yet I could make out their pain as much as they tried to hide it.
"Because I want to be able to help you."
There was silence and I brought the phone away from my ears a couple of times double checking the caller hadn't hung up on me. We could always find their name through tracking the numbers anyway.
"i don't have to tell you that.."
"You are absolutely right. How about your initials or some kind of nickname?"
"i shouldnt of called this."
"No!it's okay. You should of called it.. and you did."
"goodbye... Phil."
"if you hang up we have to send people over there."
"you dont know where i am."
"We could find out."
"o-oh."
There was a short silence quickly replaced by the callers voice.
"It wont matter anyway."
"Why?"
"because i wont be here. if you come you will see the rope, and what used to be a boy in pain. now he will be at peace and doing the world a favour."
"don't do this. That isn't true."
"dont do what phil? give me three reasons."
"I could give you five." I smirked.
"You called the hotline..you don't really want to go through with this."
There was another pause causing my anxiety to grow every second.
"y-you can call me dh... a-and phil, why do you work at a hotline for people who want to die."
I paused...not because I didn't have an answer but because I didn't wanna say the wrong thing.
"sorry. i shouldnt of-"
"No DH it's okay. I like saving people."
"p-phil."
"Yes?"
"s-s-save m-me. p-p-pl-please."
