A month later I was going to the hospital to see Laney before I head off for college. I arrived to the hospital late that day. I got there at two in the afternoon. I walked straight into Laney’s room like I always do to my surprise none of her stuff was there nor was she. I found a nurse that worked on the floor. I asked her, “Where is Laney? Did they move her? I noticed her things aren’t in her room. Can you tell me her new room number?” I asked the woman. The woman sighed and looked down. “Can you please tell me where she is?” The woman looked at me with sorrowful eyes as I see Laney’s mother walking over. “Where is she? Where is she? Why won’t you tell me?” I screamed at the nurse and I began to cry because I realized that Laney was dead. Laney’s mother held me as I cried. The nurse finally sputtered out an apology and walked off.
“How can this happen?” I asked no one imparticular.
“April, it’s a part of God’s plan. Laney had a purpose and her purpose was to help you. She told me all about you. She told me that she just wanted to make you happy again. You were her best friend.” Laney’s mother said to me.
“I’m not as strong as Laney. I can’t put on a brave face like her. I can’t pretend everything is alright. I can’t do this anymore.” I said to her.
“Laney just wanted you to be happy. Could you please just do that? It is all she wanted from you. Just give her that much.” She said.
“I’ll try.” I said simply.
“That’s all she wanted.”
