Twenty year old Maggie Peterson is a new housemaid in the home of the very wealthy London gentleman, Mr. Robert Lattimore. As soon as she is offered a job in Lattimore's stately mansion in Exeter in the English county of Devon, she accepts the job, and because of it, she falls for Lattimore, who seems to know she does not exist.
