A slight breeze blew through the territory. Moonbrush was out hunting, stalking a juicy rabbit that happened to wander near her den.
The "nest" was decidedly close to her old home, but Moonbrush didn't care. Sometimes she slipped past the boundaries and close to the camp so she could hear the laughter and happiness one last time.
Leaping out, the she-cat hissed fiercely, paralyzing the rabbit with fear just long enough so she could land a killing blow.
Do the murderers do this to ForestClan? She though dryly, rolling her eyes and picking up the prey.
Trekking back to her den, she hid it underneath a blanket of dirt before collasping in a bed of moss, looking out at the dark sky through a sky hole in her stone roof.
At least I can see the sky, Moonbrush thought, wondering who she was staring at. StarClan, if you can hear me, please forgive me. I just wanted to be the best, and in doing so followed my leader, abandoning you. Please forgive me. She closed her eyes, welcoming the silent darkness.
"Hey," a voice whispered. "Is there anyone here?"
Wait, isn't that- the cat sniffed, freezing Moonbrush mid-thought. Don't. Move. They'll just leave when-
Scrape. Scrape. Scrape. Were those... Sounds of digging?
My rabbit! Moonbrush thought indignantly. The pawsteps fadded away, and the she-cat burst out of her den, racing after the scent.
Those selfish Clan cats already have enough food for themselves! she snarled, running faster.
"Welcome back."
Moonbrush had run into the camp.
"Don't yowl. They're asleep." the mysterious prey thief took a breath. "I have convinced Pantherstar to let you in. You will live with us again and help pinpoint and exile the traitors." The sound of walking reached the she-cat's ears, but the cat was gone as she started to look.
As the white-furred female settled back into her old moss, a cat snuck out of the den.
They should be out by now, the cat thought grimly, brightening when they saw another slip out of the warriors den.
"Come on," they (Cat 1) whispered, running towards a mouse den.
As they slayed the rodents, Cat 1 commented, "Thanks for coming night hunting with me. I just don't think I could do it alone."
Cat 2 nodded, burying their kill.
"And I got you a piece of prey."
Cat 2 gasped. "How?! I thought we had killed them all!" the dead squirrel made Cat 2's mouth water, and they looked at Cat 1 for permission before eating it.
But they've been so nice to me... the killer thought uncertainly. They made a split second decision. Cat 2 was about to eat the part with deathberries.
"Wait!" Cat 2 paused midbite. "I know the prey's for you, but could I have just a tiny bit?"
"'Course!" Cat 2 beamed after they finished chewing.
Cat 1 steeled themselves and ripped out the part with poison fruit, excusing themselves with "I saw and smelled a mouse! Be back!" and spitting out the squirrel meat.
At least they're safe... Cat 1 sighed internally, eventually joining back up with Cat 2 and finishing the night hunt.
"Yeah, and we lost a kill," a starry orange tabby with blue eyes replied bitterly.
