Seems like I'm always here, at my desk, hacking away. Peggy Kingston, one of the best hackers in the world, somehow always stuck behind a desk. It's not like this is what I wanted to do with my life, but when you grow up with no parents, you kind of just go with the flow.
I grew up as a student at The Hackers Academy for Lost youth or THAFLY for short. This school has basically trained us all from birth to hack into people's phones, computers, TVs, anything we can get out codes into.
Why? Well, that may be a bit complicated to explain. Around a decade back, humanity got a bit too violent for its own good, starting a raging world war that left many orphaned and just plain dead.
That's when TERIO (or Bacterio if you want to get technical) decided to come up with a mind sleeper device so that people basically became mind slaves for the majority of their lives.
However, the system was flawed and needed to be constantly coded in order for the mind sleeper to continue working, otherwise, humanity may slip back into their old ways. It's not like they don't have some freedom though, from 9 am until 7 pm, the mind sleepers are neutralized so that people can still socialize and have the illusion of freedom.
At least people now have become far more friendly. And why aren't the hackers under the effect of the mind sleepers? We were deemed too young to have the same violent tendencies, and have been educated since we were found to act under the rules of TERIO.
1. Never harm anyone, 2. Always remain loyal to your cause aka TERIO and 3. Preserve your own life as long as it doesn't endanger anyone else. These rules, along with many others, stop us from straying too far into individualism.
Not to say we hackers don't have any identities, we are the few who can be slightly more open and annoyed about our situation. But that's only with each other, not with any of the Teachbots that watch over us when we're hacking, making sure we're on task.
10 hours each day of coding for all of us, leaving 4 hours for fun, and 10 more to sleep. Then we switch with the other hackers, who work the night shift. The school runs like clockwork, down to the last detail.
Scheduled eating times, drinking times and even bathroom breaks, THAFLY has the timing down to an art. Which is why it gets so tedious. I am one of the few who can't stand the schedule. While I think what we're doing is right, we should be able to have more than 4 hours a day!
I pushed my glasses back up my nose in frustration. Coding was easy. But when it's your life, you get so bored of it so quickly. The buzzer signifying that our day was over grabbed my attention.
If only that buzzer would shut up for once, and all the power to everything shut off. Then we could have more time. I pushed away from my desk, stretching my aching shoulders from being hunched over all day. If only something, anything, would happen!
