lilia looked herself over in the mirror, admiring the outfit the stylist had her in. it was the final photo shoot before the release of the film in two weeks, and the magnitude of the movie was finally starting to set in. as nervous as she was to make her debut in the marvel universe, she was more than ecstatic to see the months of hard work be shown on the big screen. it was all so surreal.
there was a knock at the dressing room door, and lilia announced a 'come on in'. she turned to see tom walk inside, dressed in his own peter-parker outfit, ready for the pictures to be taken. lilia thought about the moment tom and her first met and how different things had turned out now. she never would've imagined it happening, but she was so happy it did.
tom joined her at the mirror, wrapping his arms around her from behind and placing a gentle kiss on her cheek. he admired the girl next to him, and just like lilia, he couldn't believe the two were actually together. he'd fallen in love with her long ago, and was continuing to fall in love with her more everyday.
"they said they'll be ready to start shooting in five minutes, love." tom told the girl he held in his arms, and her skin tingled at the nickname he'd given her.
she nodded and smiled. "sounds good."
just then, her phone began to ring, and she slithered out of tom's arms to check the caller i.d. her demeanor froze up a bit when she saw the name light up on the screen, and tom watched as she uncomfortably stiffened. she raised the phone to her ear.
"hi, mom."
tom clearly heard the dread in those two words.
"hi, honey. i was just calling to check up on you, it's been a while since you've picked up the phone." the voice of lilia's mother rang loud and clear through her cellphone, a pleasant greeting laced with passive aggressive undertones.
"oh, i'm doing pretty well. i'm actually about to go shoot some last minute promotion pictures. can i call you right back when we're done?" lilia asked, trying her best to keep her voice light and unsuspecting. it wouldn't do anyone good to start off immediately frustrated with her mother.
her mother interrupted her. "actually, i only need a minute of your time. you see, chase is still looking for a job and even with all the hours at the office, we're still struggling a little bit."
lilia sighed heavily. "what do you need."
she ignored tom's raised eyebrows, instead listening to her mother as she said, "just a few funds to help make ends meet before the end of the month," she paused, and when lilia didn't respond, she added, "please, my darling, you don't want to see your mama end up giving her house back to the bank. i can't bear to part with this house, it's where we raised you."
lilia nodded. "yeah, i know," she couldn't help but feel bad for her mother at some points, and she knew that even with the strained relationship, family was important. "how much?"
"seven thousand," she answered. "my breathing treatments get so expensive."
lilia bit her lip, knowing good and well she could afford it and therefore, she believed, had no reason to say no. "i'll transfer it as soon as i'm done with the shoot."
"thank you, sweetie. i love you."
lilia said, "i love you too."
she hung up the phone.
tom gave her a questioning look, and she just shook her head. she hadn't shared the details of the true drama between her and her mother. tom still didn't understand why she dreaded every phone call or rarely spoke of her. but he just gave her space, knowing she'd open up when she was ready.
especially because lilia still had a lot of opening up to do.

lol pls forgive me this sucks but i wanted to get something up so i could properly say TYSM for 100k on this story!! it's absolutely insane that my spinoff of masked hearts has been able to grow so much and ily all and i'm so vvv thankful for u!!! MUAH!!!
