Miss 69 Degrees

"Oh my Lord."

Jungkook looks to me in surprise as I start pacing all over the floor of his room, panic flashing through me in violent bursts.

"What did I just do? Holy crap— what did I just do?"

He grips my shoulder as my breathing begins to get irregular, his voice soothing and gentle as he draws my body to his chest.

"It's okay, Elle. There's nothing to be worried about. You can stay with us— you don't have anywhere to go, do you?"

I shake my head sheepishly, realizing that I was in Jungkook's room. The air here smells nice— different from the hospital-like smell the oxygen in my previous house had.

A shiver tingles up my spine when I peek through his open curtains, realizing I could see the house I'd just left just a few feet away.

Being so close makes me nervous.

"Here," Jungkook says to me as he draws the curtains together. "Are you feeling okay, though? Nothing wrong?"

"I'm fine, Jungkook. I always was." I breathe carefully— trying to calm down the anger that bubbled up inside me whenever I thought about the lie I'd been living in my entire life.

I'd always been fine.

"You look like a rabbit," I point out abruptly, and he stares at me for a long second before bursting out in giggles.

"I get that a lot. You're so random, Elle. Did you know that?"

"It's true," I shrug as I hop on top of his bed, looking at the tightly drawn curtains. "Jungkook? Can you open the window, please?"

"Sure. Come closer," He says, lifting me up effortlessly as I squeal in surprise. "Come on, Elle. You should open your first window."

A tiny smile dances on my lips as I clutch the windowsill, nodding to his suggestion. I can feel his eyes watching me as I quietly push open the slide of glass.

The fresh air that rushes in is fascinating.

I laugh in ecstasy as I let the gentle breeze ruffle my hair, kiss my face and cheeks. A soft wave of sunlight follows suit, and I see Jungkook step back further in the corner of my eye.

"How does it feel?" He asks, happiness twinkling in his beautiful doe eyes as he  watches me smile until my lips hurt.

"Fantastic."

"Better than me?" He pouts, and laughter fills my lips as I bound over to him, hugging him tightly. Without him, I would've still been oblivious to the lie I'd been living in.

He was my everything now.

"Of course not, Jungkook." I assure him, and his face lights up as he smiles softly.

"If you keep hugging me like that, I might have to bite you, Elle."

He laughs even deeper when I flinch at his unexpected comment. Even though he makes it sound like a joke, I can tell that me being too close to him was triggering his instincts.

I had to keep my distance, even if I didn't want to.

Then the door creaks open, and Jimin walks in, clutching his phone with deathly white hands. He looks almost panicked with his eyes trained on the device, fingers flying across the touchscreen.

"Jungkook, you need to help me beat this level. I'm so close—"

Then he sees me.

He drops his phone.

Jungkook disappears from my side as soon as he sees the phone slip out of Jimin's hands. His body is a dark blur as he appears in his original position just a second later, Jimin's phone unscathed in his open palm.

Jimin doesn't even look surprised as he thanks Jungkook, the game completely forgotten in his mind as he points at me.

"Is she going to die now?"

"No, hyung." Jungkook says casually to Jimin's stunned face. "Apparently her mother is a liar so she doesn't really have an illness at all. And then when Elle confronted her about that, she tried to hit her. So I brought her here. It's okay for her to stay, right?"

Jimin's eyes go wide.

"I knew that human was corrupt. We should've brought her earlier— did she hit you before Jungkook arrived?"

Jungkook's face goes tense, as if he hadn't thought about that prospect. His taut features only relax when I shake my head, indicating that she hadn't.

"Might as well give you a tour of our house," Jimin says. "You're not planning to stay in Jungkook's room for the rest of the time, are you?"

"Uh,"

Jungkook interrupts me, his eyes wide as he shakes his head firmly.

"No. What if I accidentally bite her in my sleep?"

The past flickers through my mind as I remember the morning when Jungkook first marked me, which all had happened totally by accident.

"I mean, you have to sleep somewhere. All the rooms are occupied and the living room is gets way too freezing at night."

"It's okay," I assure him when Jungkook's face begins to turn dark with realization. "I can handle some temperature."

"Yeah, right." Jimin mutters under his breath. "Miss 69 degrees."

A blush colors my cheeks as I realize that I was already shivering a bit from the temperature in Jungkook's room, which was only three degrees lower than 68.

I'd gotten so used to the carefully set temperature that I couldn't find myself handling anything lower or higher.

"I know Yoongi hyung won't give up his room," Jimin starts, counting down one finger from the seven he holds up. "And Namjoon hyung doesn't like anyone near his computers..."

"It's really fine." I say quickly. The last thing I wanted to do was take over someone's room— that would be inexcusable. I was already getting so much help from them.

"I can—"

"No," Jungkook cuts me off, voice firm and authoritative. "I'm not going to let you sleep on the living room couches. You don't realize how cold they can get at night— and what if you catch a fever or something?"

Jimin continues mumbling and counting down fingers until he's left with three.

"I think Taehyung would be fine giving up his room for a while. Or you can choose mine, but I have to say that Taehyung has a bigger room—"

"No." I say firmly. "I am sleeping on the couch and no one is going to tell me otherwise. Even if you guys are okay with it, I'm not— you've already done so much—"

"I'm not going to be okay when you catch a cold or something, Elle. You can use my room," Jungkook says, his eyes glowing a firm silver as he turns to Jimin.

"I'm going to stay in V hyung's room, hyung. You don't have to look so worried."

Jimin laughs nervously as he quickly leads me out Jungkook's room, making sure he's out of range before whispering amusedly to me.

"Jungkook's really hard to wake up when he once falls asleep— and he's too big for his own good. He'd probably take up the entire bed."

When I exit the room, I immediately see Taehyung and Jin, slumped out lazily on the couch as they sip on a familiar packet.

They nearly fall off of the couch once they see me come out casually out of their maknae's room.

"W-Why—"

"Hyung, I'm sleeping in your room tonight." Jungkook interrupts, and V's eyes go wide with numb surprise.

"What is she doing here? Why is she not dead?"
