lilia sat at the bar in downtown los angeles, one of her favorite places to find a good drink. the lighting was dark, making her blend in with the crowd. it wasn't an extremely boujee place, and so most people didn't expect celebrities to hang out there. therefore, it was her go-to place when she just wanted to relax and feel normal.
lilia felt as if she was in a very peculiar season of her life. the press tour had ended, she wasn't sure where she stood with relationships in her life, and she anxiously awaited the premiere of one of the biggest projects she'd ever been apart of. somehow, she felt alone sitting in the bar, the drink in front of her and sweater on her shoulders doing nothing to ease the cold feeling of the air around her.
"i'll have what she's having."
the familiar voice instantly warmed her up.
tom took a seat on the stool next to her, the bartender immediately attending to his request. he wore a hoodie over his head, covering up his identity from most unsuspecting people. but lilia could recognize his face anywhere, and she instantly smiled when he made eye contact with her.
the bar was unusually quiet, making the space seem more intimate between the two young adults. "so, on a scale from one to ten, how fake do you rank each of our friends' excuses on why they couldn't come tonight?"
tom chuckled. "i'd say all of them were pretty bad, except harrison's. that was pretty accurate."
lilia nodded. "they really aren't as sly as they think they are, you know?"
"right," tom agreed. yet, lilia didn't even know the half of it. she didn't know that tom was in on this too, having asked everyone else to cancel plans so that he could have alone time to talk to lilia. as she took another sip of her drink, the bartender sliding tom's order to him. he picked it up, raising it to his lips. he drank some of the orange colored liquid, and then coughed, wiping his mouth. "what is that?"
"amaretto with bourbon." lilia grinned, taking the final swing of hers. she knew he wouldn't like it and was awaiting his realization.
tom shook his head, sliding the glass to the opposite side of the counter. he looked at lilia, "how long have you been here, ten minutes?"
"ten minutes too long." she answered. "z was the one who wanted to get drinks and she can't come."
"let's go somewhere else then," tom suggested, standing up. "anywhere you've been dying to go recently?"
lilia shook her head. "not really, we just got back from traveling the world."
"well, then let's just explore what's right in front of us." tom extended his hand.
lilia smiled, taking it. tom held onto her gently as they exited the bar, greeted by the bright lights of downtown los angeles. the two of them felt small compared to the surrounding buildings and vast landscape. lilia stayed close to him, loving the way his hand fit perfectly around hers, as if they were made for each other.
a thousand times lilia had looked at tom, whether it was in passing or while filming a scene, but nothing compared to the way she looked at him that night. it was as if the universe had finally made it clear to her that not only did she find herself intensely infatuated with him, but he looked at her with the same sense of magic.
they passed through the streets of l.a., taking note of everything around them—from the passerby's to the cars whizzing to the artificial stars that lined the sky from the buildings. they stopped walking once they stumbled upon a street performer. the man was a violinist, playing a sweet, slow tune, a few couples listening contently.
tom turned to face lilia. "care to dance?"
lilia's eyes widened. "seriously?"
"oh, i'm completely serious," tom said with a wink, taking lilia's hands and placing them on his shoulders. she simply laughed, shaking her head as his hands made their way to her hips. "this is one of my favorite songs."
"didn't know you were such a fan of classical music." lilia commented, discretely moving her body closer to his.
"i'm not, but i am a fan of being here with you," tom answered, and lilia's eyes softened.
the two remained quiet for a little bit, simply swaying to the soft music. lilia felt at home in tom's arms, and contentment settled on her heart. for so long, she had been searching for something in her life to make her feel satisfied with where she was, with who she was, and she had finally found it.
she wanted to make that finally known.
"tom?"
he looked up at her.
"this may sound crazy, but i have to say it. i've been keeping it in for months and months and i just want to be honest with you, and more importantly, honest with myself,"
lilia took a deep breath of bravery.
"i really like being with you, tom. you're always there for me through everything, and i think about you all the time. and you make me laugh and have so much fun and just forget about all the bad things going on in my life. and that's probably my favorite thing; the fact that no matter what is going on around me, all it takes is one look from you for me to feel special, to feel wanted, to feel like i belong. and basically what i'm trying to say is this: no matter how complicated life gets, i want you. i always have."
tom was quiet for a moment.
and then he whispered,
"thank god, because i'm incredibly in love with you, lia."
no time was wasted before he pressed his lips against hers, and she kissed back tenderly, heart fluttering and soul flying.
it was the type of kiss one could never forget, with the one person she never could forget.
they were happier than ever.
