I'm sure what made me do it.
As much as I know Chase is a bad man, simply a demon locked inside Ren's body, I couldn't help myself. I'm not sure what it was, maybe his dangerous allure. Maybe it's how he roped me in with curiosity, not letting me see any part of him until it was too late. I'd like to think he manipulated me into this kiss, however, I know that's not true.
Through all these thoughts, though, that was the last thing I was worried about. Because it wasn't just a kiss in that moment. It didn't mean I was just kissing a demon trapped within an Alpha's body. It means so much more.
Because he's my mate.
As surprised as I was, I didn't pull away. In fact, it was as if I couldn't, as if I couldn't convince myself to do so even if I tried.
I'll worry about the reality of what this means later. For now, I simple concentrate on the feeling of his lips against mine. His hands no longer pin me against the wall, moving down to my waist to pull me closer to his body. I can feel both his warmth and the sparks seep into me, making me shiver.
My hands find his hair, letting the soft, silken strands falling through the tips of my fingers. He pulls his lips from mine for a moment, moving down to kiss alone my jawline and down my neck, making me shiver.
My body starts to heat up, and I silently consider rather scandalous thoughts I've never had before, like him laying me down on the sand and pulling my clothes off...
"Oh my God."
I've never pushed away from someone so hard in my life. I've never kissed someone before until now, however, I can imagine I would never jump away as fast in life. As I whirl around, eyes wide, lips swollen, I see Mabel stepping out of the water, covering her mouth with her hands.
"Oh Mabel, hi," I stutter, looking back at Chase, who hardly seems bothered at all. Pushing my hair back, I hope I don't look too flustered. I'm sure I do though, and from Mabel's end, all she sees is the Alpha and his assistant making out.
"Sorry to interrupt," she says slowly, twisting water out of her hair. "I was just curious about what was going on around this area, but I think I get it now."
I want to sink right into this sand.
"That's okay Mabel," I hear Chase say. He doesn't sound amused, so when I turn around, I realise he seems almost confused, blinking a few times. That's when I realise that it's no longer Chase standing with us, but Ren. He shakes his head, and I see that green eye come to life. He's back with us. I can feel my cheeks flush.
Mabel looks at me, that smile on her face telling all. I narrow my eyes on her, a silent warning not to utter a single word to anyone. I have a feeling she will though, since gossip is her favourite word behind drama.
"You should go back to the other girls," I tell her firmly. She seems to get the hint, nodding as she turns around, wading back into the water to swim back to the other side.
I don't say more till she disappears.
When I turn around, Ren still looks beyond confused. He's probably wondering how he got here, and why he is soaking wet and covered in sand. Of course Chase had to disappear as Mabel arrived. It was the perfect way to get out of speaking to me about being mates. So does this mean Ren is also my mate? I'm going to have to find out.
"So, I'm assuming Chase got ahold of my body earlier than I thought," Ren mutters, running hands through his hair. The same here I was touching only moments ago. I shake those thoughts out of my hair.
"He's getting stronger," I murmur. "He didn't tell me anything. He just confirmed he is a demon from the Devotion Pack."
"Thank you for trying to help."
Help. Making out with the so called enemy isn't what I would call helping, that's for sure. I feel the guilt seep in within me, knowing I made a mistake with that. I just got so overwhelmed with attraction i couldn't help myself. And now he is my mate? Or maybe Ren is? It's hard to tell when I was touching Ren's body with Chase in his mind.
"So why are we here? Why did Mabel show up?" Ren questions. I can't imagine how hard it must be for him to suddenly come to conscious when Chase had control over his mind. Nothing must make sense to him right now.
"Ah, Chase gave them all the day off, so I would suggest going along with it. They have probably gone back up to the manor," I tell him.
He nods grimly.
We walk back toward the water together, ready to swim back around to join the others. I'm curious about when Chase will return. I'm sure it will be soon, considering he has been able to control Ren as he likes. As dangerous as he is, I also need to speak to him about this mate thing. He has to know something about it, or maybe he is as clueless as me.
"Have you considered sending these girls off the island to keep them safe?" I ask. It's been my own appointed responsibility to get these girls out of here to safety, however, they work for Ren, and it should be his decision.
He seems to consider that as we step into the water. It somehow seems colder now. "They are my staff. They keep this Pack running just as much as I do."
"Maybe there are other people who can help."
Ren doesn't say anything until we swim around and make it back to the shore. Sure enough, the girls must have gone back up to the manor, hoping to spend the rest of their day off doing something else they would like. I follow Ren up the hill, staring at his back. He has no idea what just went on between me and Chase. Should I tell him?
"The only other people who know about me and Chase are the Alpha's," Ren explains as we approach the manor. Some of the girls were kind enough to bring us out towels to dry ourselves down.
"Maybe you could invite your closest friends and have them here until we can get a better hold on Chase," I say. I would feel much safer with Alpha's around, especially since I don't know his intentions yet.
Even as my mate.
Ren decided he would think about it, which was our last parting words before we headed back to our rooms to shower after our swim. I couldn't get both him and Chase out of my mind at all. I'm not sure who to consider which one is my mate, if maybe both are. All I know is it was Ren's body and Chase's mind.
I decided, I can't take it anymore. I have to know. As day turns to dusk, I decide I'm going to leave my room to find Ren, hoping is is actually him in control rather than Chase. I need to find out these answers now.
Padding down the hallway, I consider for only a fleeting moment whether he would be bored with my intrusion or not.
Oh well.
Standing outside the door to his suite, I knock on it promptly. There is no answer for a moment. I considering turning around and leaving, thinking he might be having dinner, when he opened the door, standing there in just a towel. It hits me for a moment with a flashback of Chase on the beach this morning.
Checking his eye, I make sure it was actually Ren. Thankfully, Chase hasn't come back. This is the perfect time to get Ren alone to hear from him. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt, I was just wondering if you would like to get dinner and eat it outside to look at the stars."
As those words came out of my mouth, I suddenly feel stupid. Ren has never felt any attraction to me to this point, so asking him on what feels like a date sound foolish.
"Sure, let me get dressed. Sounds great."
As he lets the door swing closed, I'm stunned for a moment that he actually agreed. In no time at all, he reappears nicely dressed. I let him lead me down the hall, where we grab a blanket and some food, going outside to lay it down on the grass. We settle down next to each other, looking to the stars embedded into the dark sky.
"I've decided I will call for a few Alpha's to come here until everything is sorted," Ren explains. I nod, glad that the girls will be able to go home, where they will be safe. I doubt Chase will want to mess with one of the Alphas.
"I'm glad. You made a good choice," I murmur, glancing over at him. He smiles back at me, and I decide I need to say something.
Sitting up, I get his attention. "Can I be honest?"
"Yeah, of course," he says, looking at me with concern. He's probably assuming I'm about to declare I'm leaving, however, I'm in too deep now, I suppose.
I loosen a deep breath. "I think I found my mate."
