Class ended and it was time for detention. While I slowly started to pack my notebooks, Eshe came up to me with a frown.

"Carter, why did you-"

"I don't know," I mumbled miserably, already regretting what I did. "I just felt bad for him, he was just trying to help us and..." My voice drifted off.

"I should have said something to Mr. Rodriguez," she murmured.

"It's fine Eshe, what's two weeks of detention going to do to me anyway, right?" I chuckled dryly. "I have to go now, or I'll be late."

Eshe gave me a small nod, patting me on the shoulder. "Come back alive Carty."

I smiled. "I'll try."

"And watch out for that Killian guy, I don't trust him. If he even tries to bully you-"

"D-D-Don't worry," I stuttered sheepishly. "I can take care of myself now."

Eshe pursed her lips, looking unconvinced. I used to be an easy target for the popular kids, whether it was for my lunch money or just to lash out their anger and throw a few kicks and punches. It was only just this year that the bullying died down, probably because they got bored of picking on the same kid for so long. But whatever the reason was, I was just glad that it was over.

I felt bad that I always had to depend on Eshe for help, so I was kind of glad that I was finally able to do something on my own.

Did I regret it? Sure.

Would I do it again? No way.

But was I proud of myself? Definitely.

We both parted ways, but as I turned around, my eyes stumbled upon Luke's. I flinched, quickly dropping my gaze before scurrying past him.

Yeah, he still gave me the chills.

I went to the detention room, gulping before opening the door. Mr. Yon, my P.E teacher, was sitting at the very front of the classroom with his feet on the table.

"Take a seat," he grunted, not even bothering to look up from his magazine. "You might want to hurry before they all get taken."

I looked towards the empty classroom, only just realising the sarcasm in his tone. With a shaky laugh, I closed the door behind me and sat near the window. As I started to take out my notebooks and pencil case, I furrowed my brows, starting to look around me.

Wait, where was Killian?

I paused.

Who am I kidding, as if he'd actually show up.

And maybe it was for the best.

Detention wasn't as bad as I thought, it kind of felt like I was in my own private classroom. I finished all of my homework and started studying for next Science test. I rubbed my temples, staring at my flash cards while quietly murmuring the answers to help me memorise, but my ears perked up as I heard the door squeak open.

My eyes widened as I saw Killian step in, glancing towards the clock that hung above Mr. Yon.

He was thirty minutes late.

"Killian, you actually showed up," the teacher snorted, still flipping through his magazine. "If you're lucky, you might be able to find yourself an empty seat."

Killian looked at the empty classroom and smirked before locking eyes with me. I quickly looked down, squeezing my hands as I felt intimidated by his presence. My body stiffened as his footsteps got closer, hearing him pull out the chair beside mine before plopping down with a grunt.

The entire classroom was filled with empty seats, why did he have to choose the one right beside mine?!

I switched flashcards and tried to focus on what was written on it, but I felt uncomfortable and bothered by Killian's presence. I didn't know why, but I felt like he was sitting too close to me, as if our bodies were only just inches away. I gave in to my curiosity and turned to the side to see what he was up to, but my eyes widened as I realised how close his face was, jerking away and almost falling off my chair.

"W-W-What are you doing?" I stuttered, trying to calm my beating heart.

"Oh sorry, did I scare you?" he chuckled, finally pulling away. "You were just looking at your flashcards so intensively, I thought that you had some porno hidden behind them or something," he said, bending over and picking up the pencil that I dropped.

His hair, it smelled nice.

"Here," he said, handing me it and snapping me out of my thoughts.

"T-T-Thanks," I murmured, but as I reached out to take it, I couldn't help but notice the letters tattooed on each of his fingers. Right above his knuckles were written the letters "Y.O.L.O," from index to his pinkie.

Was it even legal for him to have a tattoo?

"Yolo," I read under my breath, having a bad habit of saying my thoughts aloud. He raised a curious brow and I shifted my gaze to the side, quickly taking the pencil back. "Sorry, I couldn't help but notice."

"Oh, this?" He asked, looking down towards his fingers. "It's my life philosophy."

Your life philosophy is based on a cringey, overused acronym?

He laughed and I felt my face turn red as I realised that I did it again.

"S-S-Sorry, I didn't mean it like that," I mumbled sheepishly. Why, oh why was I like this? "So, um, your life philosophy is "you only live once?"

To my surprise, he didn't seem mad at all. In fact, he actually looked kind of happy. "Yeah," he smiled proudly. "But someone like you wouldn't understand."

I frowned, shifting my eyes back towards his. "What's that supposed to mean?" I huffed defensively.

"Aren't you Carter Jones?" he asked.

"Um, yes?"

"The guy who ranks first in the class or something," he went on.

"Uh-huh," I nodded, still confused.

"The one who hardly has any friends, barely goes out, spends his time studying every day and follows every rule that exists as well as the ones that probably don't even exist."

What?

He grinned. "I bet the most exhilarating thing that you've ever done in your life was ride a bike without your helmet on," he winked jokingly, making me flush bright red.

"That's not true!" I protested. I've actually never rode my bike without my helmet on, I'm not suicidal thank you very much.

Killian leaned against the back heels of his chair, putting his hands behind his head as he looked up towards the ceiling. "All in all, you live the safe but boring life, the complete contrary to my life philosophy," he pointed out.

I glared at him, wondering why and how he was analysing my entire life.

"That's not true," I mumbled in denial before pushing his chair forward so that he would stop leaning on it. He raised his brows and I averted my gaze to the side. "It was making me anxious," I grumbled sheepishly. "You might fall and hurt your head."

Killian paused before bursting into laughter, making me feel even more embarrassed. I think I might have heard a "too cute" somewhere in between, but I honestly couldn't tell with his deep, husky chuckles filling my ears.

Yeah, it was probably just my imagination.

"What about you?" I frowned, trying to turn the tables. "You only live once" doesn't necessarily mean going around and ruining your life by acting rebelliously, never coming to school and getting into trouble whenever you do."

He leaned his cheek against his palm, the sunlight making the pistachio color turn into a lighter green, bringing out his amused and mischievous look.

"It's actually harder than you think."

"So you're telling me that doing whatever you want, whenever you want, is harder than being a good student who works hard for his grades, always comes to class on time and does his best to behave and participate in class?" I said, raising a brow.

Without even hesitating, he answered. "Yup."

"You obviously have never pulled an all-nighter to finish an assignment."

He paused.

"Then how about we make a bet."

"A... Bet?"

He then raised four fingers, the ones with the letters "Y.O.L.O" tattooed on them, wriggling them in the air.

"Four dares," he said. "You get to give me four dares to convince me that your life style is harder than mine, and I get to give you four dares in return, to show you just how hard it is to live life like you only have one."

I narrowed my eyes. There was no way that I was going to go risk my life to prove a point. Who knows what Killian did outside of school. He could be a murder for Pete's sake!

"That's a little overboard, don't you think?" he chuckled softly. Well snap.

"Sorry, but I'll pass," I mumbled.

"Chickening out already?" he pouted.

"I'm not chickening out on anything, I just think that this is a bad idea."

"So you're admitting that my lifestyle is harder than yours?" He implied slyly.

"Absolutely not," I huffed. "I'm just saying that-"

"That you're too chicken to do anything outside your comfort zone since you always like to play it safe instead of taking risks?"

Well ouch.

"Do you hear that?" he suddenly gasped.

"Hear what?" I slowly asked. There was no one else but us in the classroom, apart from our P.E teacher who had already fallen asleep.

"I... I think I hear a chicken," he murmured. I frowned

"I don't hear-"

"Bwak," he clucked. I blinked blankly before furrowing my brows with narrowed eyes. He didn't seriously just...?

"That's real mature of you Killian," I mumbled with an eye roll.

"Bwak, bwak," he continued, now putting his arms on his hips and flapping them back and forth. "Do you hear that? It's getting louder, the chicken is- Bwaaaak."

I flinched, tightening my jaw.

"Killian, you're acting really childish right now, this isn't-"

"Bwak," he clucked on.

"Killian, stop-"

"Bwakkity, bwak, bwak," he sang.

"That's not even what a chicken-"

"Bwaaaak."

"Killian-"

"Bwak, buk, bacawk! Buk-"

"Alright, alright, I'll make that bet with you!" I shouted angrily. "Just please stop making those unbearable chicken noises," I begged.

The left side of his lip pulled towards the beauty mark below his eyes, calling up a smug grin on his face as his head slightly tilted to the side. And that's when I knew that I had just made a foolish mistake, falling right into his trap.

He gave out his left hand.

"Then let's shake on it," he mused in a husky tone that almost sent chills down my spine. I bit on my lower lip, hesitant at first, but let out a small sigh.

What's the worst he could do to me anyway?

So I took his hand and we shook on it.
