After everyone talked about how good I am and how much I shouldn't be kept in prison, the judge finally decided to let me go, seeing as I'm an adult now and am more mature and know better than to act irrationally and impulsively.
I walked outside and seen everyone surrounding, and clapping.
Amber walked up to me and hugged me.
"Thanks guys, but right now I kind of want to be alone..." I started walking forward and just avoided eye contact with everyone.
I started heading in the direction of my apartment, when I heard footsteps behind me.
"Kami?"
"Amber.. I'm not in the mood."
"What happened before your trial?"
"Nothing, okay?" I snapped, then sighed. "Look, I'm just upset and I need to be alone."
"I'm coming with you, you can say nothing the whole time, I don't care, I'm still coming."
I continued walking and sighed.
All this time, I've lived a lie. I shook my head. They're horrible parents... wait, does Ray know??
I pulled out my phone and called her.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Ray. It's Kami."
"Hey sis. What's up?"
"Umm, there's something I kinda need to tell you..."
"Kami, you don't sound okay, were you crying?"
"A little, and it's not because of the reason why mom and dad came down here... it was something they told me... about us."
"Kami.. spit it out."
"You know how it's weird that we have powerful abilities yet mom and dad are cripples?"
"Yeah...?"
"We were actually born cripples."
"Huh? Then explain how we got our abilities"
"Right after we were born, mom took us each to a lab and had abilities injected into us..."
"Wait wait wait... how is this possible??"
"When mom and dad get home, make them explain it, and if mom refuses, tell her I told you. That will give her a reason to tell you."
"Okay..."
"Bye.." I then hung up and continued walking. I then suddenly realize Amber just heard everything.
I silently walked inside my apartment and headed to my room and just sat down, I could sense Amber being kinda saddened.
I sighed and laid down on the couch and closed my eyes.
"Kami..?"
I didn't say anything, instead I tried to fall asleep. I knew Amber was there, and I knew what time it was, but I didn't care, I needed rest and just some time to myself.
I woke up in my bed, and was immediately greeted with the smell of bacon. Food? Did Amber stay and make breakfast? Wait.. what time is it??
I sat up and looked at my phone. 3:04AM.
Why is she making food this late at night??
I get up and head to the kitchen, and she immediately turned her head and greeted me.
"Amber, it's three in the morning.. what are you doing?"
"I figured you would want food when you wake up, and it got close to twelve hours so I figured you'd wake up soon."
"Well, you're not wrong about the food." I paused, then sat down. "Listen, um... I assume you heard everything when I was talking to my system yesterday, right?"
"I couldn't help but hear, yes. And yeah, I know I didn't have to follow you, but I'm your best friend and I want to make sure you're okay."
"I understand that... it's just that my parents did this to me, and never told me, until I basically forced them, or more or less just my mom.."
Amber just came up to me and hugged me.
"I'm fine now Amber.. thanks."
"What are friends for?"
"Making food." I remarked sarcastically, laughing.
"Ha ha." She turned around and finished making the food.
I then hear a ring from the living room, it was Amber's phone.
"Who's calling you this late at night?"
She shrugged. "No one really ever texts or calls me except friends from school."
"Wait so your family..?"
"Haven't heard a sound from them since graduation. Before that? When they brought me to Kinland High, and even then they never talked to me."
"That's strange."
"You're telling me." She shook her head.
She then proceeded to go get her phone.
"Huh.."
"Who is it?"
"My mom?"
"Well answer it!"
She answers it. Her facial expressions went from confusion, to shock. She set her phone down.
"Well?"
"Well it was my mom, that's for sure, and she sounded distressed. I kept telling her to calm down and explain why she called me."
"And?"
"My brother is missing.."
"Ok, wait... you have a brother?"
"Yeah." She went silent. "Guess I don't talk about my family all the much."
"How old is he?"
"Like.. seventeen?" She paused, trying to think. "He's not much younger than me."
"Do your parents talk to him?"
"I wouldn't know, my parents never wanted me around, for what it felt like at least. They never told me anything, and whenever they would go somewhere, they wouldn't tell me they left or anything."
"That's sad.."
"Well, I wasn't around them much considering I was always at a boarding school, so it didn't make any difference for me."
I hugged her. "Shouldn't we go find your brother, though?"
"How? We don't know anything except he's missing."
"First place I'd check is your apartment."
"Well, we can try, but there's no guarantee."
"Let's go!"
"Wait, what about the food?!"
"We can make more later, lets go!" I grabbed her arm and bolted out of my apartment building.
Amber began leading the way, as I did not know where exactly to go from there.
As I walked, I looked around and seen very few people walking around. Strange to see the streets empty... it is pretty late, but it's still strange.
As we continued walking, Amber's phone rang again.
"Hello? Who is this..? Wait, what?! Where are you? Okay, see you soon."
"Your brother?"
"Yep, he is at my apartment building, he just doesn't know the exact room number."
"Let's hurry!" I began running.
We eventually made it and walked inside. The doorman's desk was empty, presuming to be asleep.
Amber walks forward in the partial darkness.
"Hello?" She calls out.
"Amber....?" A subtle voice came from near the stairs.
