Eleven - Chapter 1

Cement. Everywhere. Cement walls, cement floor, cement ceiling... I was encased in a corridor of cement. Where was I? Everything ached...

I groaned softly, shifting against the cold wall as I glanced around. My mind was still hazy; the panic of not knowing where I was hadn't settled in just yet... Grey cement surrounded me, along with an open flashlight near my feet. It's light was much loved here, at least with it, I could see a little. I used my flat-clad foot to roll the small cylinder of light towards me, then promptly picked it up, feeling the cool metal in my already freezing hands. Light....

Where the hell was I anyways? I had just been taking my little sister trick-or-treating... Then everything suddenly dawned on me. I had been kidnapped. Thrown into a car by two men as Isobel ran away. I could just relive everything right now, from hearing the pounding of Isobel's shoes against gravel as she ran away, to the pain of being shoved against the side of a car. But why was I here? In the middle of a dark, cement hallway?

Grunting quietly, I eased myself up, using the wall for support, and after a bit of effort, I was standing. My ears were ringing; every sound seemed to be amplified, each and every breath as it escaped my lips, every time I moved my arm against the wall.

Shuffling. I furrowed my brows, not daring to move another inch, breathing softly. ... Someone... Or something.... was there...! I gripped my flashlight, moving the light along the rest of the corridor.

"... W-Who... Who are you?" I breathed hesitantly after gulping to soothe my aching, dry throat. A figure. My flashlight finally shone on something other than cement. ... A little girl. After finally seeing something other than all of this cement by myself, I shook against the wall, eyes wide. Something heavy fell off my head, making a loud clang somewhere near me in the darkness.

The girl looked up at me, warm chocolate eyes teary, curled up in a ball as she shook in place. Her waist-length black hair was pulled into a neat side ponytail, and she looked around 9 years old. "I... I'm Evangeline..." she whispered quietly. "Where a-are we?" her voice was raspy, full of fright and I had to strain to hear it.

"I don't know, actually..." I replied quietly, and slowly kneeled onto one knee in front of her, ignoring the dull pain that came with that action. "I'm China. China Laine." Evangeline wiped her tears with the back of her hand gently, sniffling. "I wanna go home...." she whined softly. Ah... I suppose Evangeline must've been kidnapped as well...

"Well, let's try to get out of here together, alright?" I whispered softly, smiling at her, as I slowly stood up. Evangeline nodded quickly, wiping her tears again, as she made a weak smile. "Okay..." she grabbed my hand, and I squeezed her delicate hand reasurringly. I had to protect her... Hopefully Isobel was alright.

All I could do was hope Evangeline and I would be able to escape soon.
