|| Chapter 1 ||

"Tessa go long!" Johnny, a junior on the football team, shouts from across the school parking lot. My head snaps up at the sound of my name to see a football soaring across the school parking lot.

"Son of a bitch," I grumble, dropping my backpack on the ground and running after the ball. I shove students to the side, ignoring their complaints as I move further back and jump in the air, catching the ball.

"Woo!" A few of the football players cheer after I catch it.

"I am victorious!" I yell, raising the ball in the air, throwing it back to Johnny and grabbing my backpack.

The rest of the students just head to their cars completely nonchalant, like I didn't just perform that amazing catch.

I brush my shoulder-length, dirty blond hair out of my face and walk over to the black convertible sitting in the lot. I jump over the car door and situate myself in the passenger seat, throwing my backpack onto the tiny backseat.

I hear a loud sigh greet me, "What is the point of me unlocking the car when you just jump over the door anyway?" Drew asks as he climbs into the car in his boring old way.

I grin up at him, "Because you're a stickler for responsibility," I wink at him. He shakes his head lightly, messing up his brown curls even more than usual.

"So Mr. Senior, just graduation left to go and that's it," I look over at him and see his face slowly drop.

"And Prom," he mutters quietly. Oh shit, I forgot about Prom. His expression is sullen and I feel the urge to try and put a smile on his face.

"Well, you'll have me there with you," I nudge his arm, trying to coax a smile out of him. He doesn't say anything. "Drew..."

"It's cool, I'm excited, thanks again for agreeing to be my last-minute date," he smiles halfheartedly at me. I nudge him in the ribs with a grin.

"Hey, I'm your best friend, I'll always be here for you," I smile brightly, but on the inside, I'm dreading having to wear a prom dress. Mom and I had spent the last week tearing through stores to find a last minute dress. "Wanna come back to mine? Maddie keeps asking about you and I know dad wanted to talk about that UFC fight you guys watched last week."

He looks over at me with a small smile, "Sure, I'd love to." He puts the car in drive and heads out of the school parking lot and in the direction of my house.

I smile and lean back in my seat, letting the wind blow my hair behind me. My neighborhood is on the more secluded side of town. It's far away from any highway and my house is located three separate streets away from the main road, in a dead end and up a hill. The children in this area don't spend their days outside in their yards, but would rather sit inside on their electronics most days.

We turn onto the steep driveway leading to my house. Drew parks in Sebastian's old car spot in front of the tree by the side of the house. Mom loves that tree so much she decided to put a wrought-iron bench underneath it for practical and décor uses.

"So, are your siblings coming back for the summer?" he asks, turning off the ignition and climbing out of is car.

I jump over the door and he gives me a flat look but I just grin, "Um, yeah I think except Harry since he's working now, they've all been really busy so we don't get to chat as much," I shrug. I lean on his hood closer to him, "Get this, Harry is bringing Natalie to stay with us for a few days."

He raises both eyebrows, "Natalie's coming?"

"Yup, big mistake on his part since everyone is going to be home," I chuckle, walking up to the front door.

"You mean Sebastian is going to be home?" He smirks, following me into the kitchen.

"Exactly." I open the fridge and throw him a bottle of vitamin water, grabbing one for myself. "And he still has a debt to pay from Christmas," I smirk evilly.

Drew sighs, exasperated, "You're still going on about the chewing gum thing?"

I gape at him, "'Thing?' I had to cut my hair because of him!" I raise my voice in outrage, pushing a hand through my hair that now falls just above my shoulders.

Feet shuffle down the stairs and Maddie walks into the kitchen, headphones covering her ears as she scrolls through music on her iPod. She ignores us as she walks over to the fridge, pulling out a bottle of water.

I rest my hands on the kitchen island, staring at Maddie. She doesn't even bother to acknowledge us. Drew runs a hand over his mouth so hide his laughter. I step in front of her and rip the headphones off.

"Hey!" Maddie complains, moving the headphones around her neck, glaring at me with an annoyed look on her face, "Can I help you?"

Don't strangle her Tess, mom will kill you.

"Hello dearest sister, how was your day? Mine was great!" the sarcasm is thick in my reply.

"Hi Tess, my day was fine, can I go now?" she asks, placing one hand on her hip.

"You know, you used to be cute, now you're just a brat."

"I'm wounded," she pouts dramatically, turning away from me. She stops short when she sees Drew, "Hi Drew," she says quietly.

He walks over to her, giving her a bone crushing hug, "Hey Munchkin, how was school?" he grins down at her.

She smiles, rolling her eyes, "Boring, Rosie tried to trip me at lunch but I used it to my advantage and spilt my juice on her," she grins innocently.

I snort, holding out my fist for her to bump, "Been there, done that."

She relaxes more and fist bumps me with a grin, "So, what are you guys doing tonight?"

"Going to the skatepark with a couple friends," I reply, jumping onto the kitchen counter.

"Cool, Ellie is taking me to Tash's house tonight so it'll just be you, mom and dad this weekend," she informs me, referring to the family nanny, Ellie as she walks towards the staircase.

I jump off the counter, opening the freezer and digging around the back for my secret stash. I hold up the bag for Drew to see, "Pizza rolls?"

"I'm starving," he groans, grabbing a baking sheet and preheating the oven.

"I did not! You have no proof!" Alyssa, my best friend, shouts at Mateo. Our group of friends laugh, jeering Alyssa. "Oh fuck all of you, it wasn't me," she laughs, shoving Benji's arm.

"Oh come on Lys, just admit that it was you," Mateo smirks, taking a sip from his beer bottle.

The park is pitch black save for the lights surrounding the skatepark, where a bunch of us are hanging out, drinking and skating.

"For the last time Teo, I was not the streaker at that game!" She shouts, her face red in anger as she sips from her own beer bottle.

Mateo just grins in reply, looking at his friends silently. I shove him as I skate past, "Dude, lay off."

"You're right, maybe it was you, Tess," he slyly raises an eyebrow in question.

I look at him over my shoulder, "You're not that stupid, are you Mateo?" He raises his hands in surrender winking at me, causing me to scoff loudly in return, skating closer to where Drew is leaning against a bench fidgeting with his phone. "Don't make me come over there, Loner."

Drew takes his eyes off his phone and looks up at me, "Loner?"

"A lone, lonely loner," I tell him, quoting Sid from Ice Age. He chuckles, slipping his phone into the back pocket of his jeans. He stretches his arms over his head with a wry grin on his face.

"That's a lot of aloneness," he walks over to me and holds out his hands for me to grasp so my skateboard stops. We're now eyelevel since he's only one inche taller than me.

I nod my head at him, "Did you text her?"

He shakes his head, his shoulders slumping, "No, didn't have the guts." He looks over my shoulder, where our friends are acting like idiots, screaming and running around the space.

"Well good because she's an ass," I grumble, letting go of his hands, skating in a circle around him.

"Theresa," he groans, rolling his eyes, watching me skate.

"No Andrew, Brianna was a bitch for breaking up with you like that, and for no good damn reason," I tell him, angrily. I jump off the skateboard and grab his arm, "Let's get you a drink."

"I'm driving you home," he reminds me but he lets me pull him along. We walk into the small group and I push him onto the bench of the picnic table everyone is crowded around.

"Drew, my man," Benji exclaims doing the bro-shake with Drew. Mateo throws Benji a beer and he hands it to Drew.

I stand on the edge of the bench and sit on the table top, knocking into Alyssa with a grin. "Hey," Alyssa says, elbowing me.

"Sup," I lean back on my hands, surveying the area. Kendall, another friend and the only other girl here, is standing on a skateboard with Liam, slowly skating on the flat surface.

Drew places an arm over my legs and gets comfortable, taking a big gulp of beer. I shift my legs getting his attention, "I'm driving us home." He nods his head in agreement before chugging the bottle.

"Damn, Drew, got some demons to drown?" Mateo laughs loudly.

"More like demon, singular," he laughs, putting his bottle down next to him.

"Oh yeah, Brianna. Well, I would just like to say thank god the bitch is gone," Mateo lifts his bottle in the air in mock toast and a few other guys follow along, laughing.

I scoff and lean forward, smacking Mateo on the head, "Don't be a dick about it," I grit my teeth moving my eyes back and forth between him and Drew, who's looking down at his hands.

"I can't wait for you to get whipped on your ass," Alyssa comments, sneering at Mateo.

I smirk, nudging Alyssa as I rest my hands on Drew's shoulders, shaking him a little. He pinches my leg and causing me to smack his shoulder in return.

"Why are you so fucking heavy?" I groan, keeling over from the weight of Drew's arm around my shoulder. I drove us home, driving slow since I only have my permit and not my license.

"You're heavy," he slurs a retort, stumbling with me to my front door.

"Ass," I laugh under my breath, balancing his weight on my back so I can grab my keys from my back pocket to unlock the door.

I manage to unlock the door and shuffle us into the foyer, "Brianna sucks," Drew states loudly.

"Shut up," I hiss.

"Why is it that my children always think they can get past me when they sneak in?" I freeze, looking up towards the living room where my mother is sitting on the couch eating a slice of pizza.

"H-hey mom, what's up?" I ask casually leaning against the wall, but Drew's feet stumble and he pivots forward. I jump up grabbing his arm before he can fall.

"This feels like deja vu," my mother mumbles, getting up and walking over to us. "Did you drink?"

"No, he drank so I drove home," I tell her seriously.

"Good." She looks over at Drew. "You, are grounded, mister." She pats his cheek softly. "Get him to bed. And you will be babysitting whenever I feel like you should for trying to sneak in." She kisses my cheek goodnight and heads up the stairs.

"Aren't you going to help me? He weighs a ton," I ask helplessly.

She puts a finger on her chin in thought. "No, you can suffer, that's good punishment," she winks, walking up the stairs. "I'm a good parent," she whispers to herself, clapping her hands in a self high-five.

"I think I'm going to chunder," Drew points out, holding his stomach in anguish.

"Lightweight," I roll my eyes, steering him in the direction of the stairs and the closest bathroom. "If you puke on any of my shit, I will destroy you," I threaten, dragging him up the stairs with me.
