"a little closer, love,
don't you see the light now?
illuminate my life," he dared,
and she complied, and how
he knew not, but nothing could compare.

"a little farther, love,
and let me see your face.
smile for me," she ordered,
so he did, and his eyes became as stars in space,
lost in time and without place, borderless.

"a little faster, love
and don't the days fly by now?
dare to be mine," he whispered.
She dared. For the first time, she allowed
love's language to stir in her.

"a little slower, love
and we'll be more than all right.
Kneel for me?" she asked,
so he looked in her eyes, blazing and bright,
and he got down on one knee at last.

"a little longer, love --
ah, I think she has your eyes.
she's beautiful," he sighed,
and she cried, cradling that bundle of light
no darkling sky could ever hide.

"a little briefer, love
and please, oh, let this pass.
hold me, please," she wept
for their everything, who slept beneath the grass
whose life was light, and whose death left them bereft.

"a little quieter, love
shh, you'll wake the baby;
kid, you're late for school," he called
and his son was out the door swiftly,
a boy whose growth left them appalled.

"a little louder, love
I can't hear as well, you know.
It's so nice to have the kids home," she smiled,
glad, that they reaped what they sowed,
glad, that soon they'd see their first child.

"a little closer, love,
don't you see the light now?
I know I do," he said,
and she felt strangely unafraid somehow,
as she held his hand, with love, and then they were dead.
