the lights are violet and intoxicating
i feel like half a dream
you pull my chair close to yours
and wrap an arm around my waist
"stop being so far away," you say
and the corner of your mouth lifts up
your voice is quiet
especially echoing in the dissonance
of the music being played
but it is lower than the bass
it trickles through the floor
and rolls over my body like thunder
i am halfway into your lap
and blushing
because it is like a movie scene
and i am mostly just uncomfortable
so you laugh
because you understand
pushing a strand of my hair
behind my ear
and gathering me into your arms
in that moment
it is just you and i
not so far away
but somewhere else entirely
somewhere violet-tinged and dreamy
i return to that place sometimes
when i fall asleep
though i would never admit it.
