Chapter 1
They call me Helen Keller. I'm not blind, I'm not deaf, just mute. My therapist always asks me "Why do you not like to speak? When you talk, you express your feelings, you can inform others, entertain others..." Obviously Dave wasn't informed of anything when I used to talk. Talking gets you nowhere in life.
I doodled in my journal, waiting for the last bell to ring. RING RING. I slid my books into my string bag and I headed out the door. I shoved through the sea of people to get to my locker.I put in my combination... I haven't spoken a word since I turned 12. That day that I turned 12 was the worst day of my life...
Dave woke me up at 6:00 a.m. with a slap. I woke up, startled, greeted by the stench of stale beer. I usually didn't wake up until 7:00 a.m... I remembered...it's my birthday. I sighed. The only time he wakes me up early is when he... I had the wind knocked out of me when he climbed on top of me, pushing his weight down on my small, frail body. He slurred, "Happy Birthday..."
I shook my head. That was the day when I realized that talking didn't help my situation. Dave would rape me and beat me and tie me up and words wouldn't do anything. So why use them? You see that boy over there going to detention? Do you know why he got in trouble in the first place? He was talking back to the teacher. Thanks to his filthy mouth, he has to sit in that stinky room for an hour when he could be at home enjoying his Friday.
His sweaty hands slithered under my shirt and inched their way up to my breasts. I sharply breathed in. He laughed his nasty laugh and continued to defile me. I couldn't open my mouth. I felt vulnerable, powerless. He stuck his thumb into my pants and rolled them down slowly. I closed my eyes tightly. I felt a sharp pain between my legs and arched back. I winced as he moaned and groaned and grunted. Tears rolled down my pain-filled face...
I pushed my way down the hall and out of the double doors at the front of the school. The rhythm of my feet hitting the asphalt mesmerized me. I heard another set of rhythms...behind me....several people. I heard snickers. A male voice called out, "Hey! Helen Keller!" The group of people laughed at me. I turned to look at them. One of the boys eyed me lustily. I frowned at him and turned back around. I heard the rhythm of their steps grow softer as the group members went their seperate ways.
I was just down the street from my house when I realized that there was still one person behind me. I stopped and turned around. It was the same guy. He smirked, "Hey Helen Keller..." I stood paralyzed. He continued, walking towards me, "I never knew that you were that cute." He brushed my hair behind my ear and whispered, "I've never seen a blue-eyed brunette before..." I staggered back. He lifted my chin and stared into my eyes. He leaned forward slowly... I closed my eyes tightly. His soft lips met mine and lingered there for a few seconds. I opened my eyes only to be greeted by a mesmerizing blue-green. He straightened up and slowly strode away.
That boy was my first love...and I didn't even know his name
A/N: I will have to take out a part of this for Sarah-land, so if you see this on Sarah-land, it WILL have a piece of it cut out. Just a warning.
