I remember the last day of school, but not for any reasons you'd expect.
Once the day began, I left the house after saying goodbye to my mom. I don't remember saying, "I love you" to her, but I wish I did. If I knew what was going to happen later on, I would've told her how much I loved her.
On the last hour of school, I met up with my two friends: Sofia and Chinedum. Our last class was yearbook, I wish I worked more in that class. However, if I was a good student, I probably wouldn't have survived on that day.
I was sitting at a table on the other side of the classroom, Chinedum was seated in the middle of the table and Sofia was on her left side. We were staring at a poster that was supposed to be finished months ago, but we were probably the most irresponsible students in the class. In the midst of laughing at some stupid joke Chinedum said, I had begun to notice students grabbing their bags and putting them on. I remember being confused because: "It's only 1:30, we don't leave for 30 more minutes."
I looked down at my sketchbook full of random doodles while Sofia was talking about the poster we never finished. Chinedum started laughing, and I remembered how contagious her laugh really was. I'm glad we were so distracted that we didn't even notice our classmates leaving until the door slammed. The classroom had gotten so deathly silent, and Sofia was the first one to break the silence, "Where did the class go?" She had asked.
Chinedum turned to me with her eyes wide, "Did they just fucking leave us?" But she was laughing, and so was Sofia. I couldn't help but laugh too. It was true that we were probably the students most infamous for "changing the spread" as Ms. Amatulli would say.
"Well, we might as well leave." I said, grabbing Sofia and I's backpack since she was too busy tying her shoe to grab it herself.
We were just about to leave, centimeters away from grabbing the door handle, when we heard screams. It sounded like we were in a horror movie, and it felt like it was too, "Oh shit!" I remembered Chinedum exclaiming and sprinting away from the door. Sofia and I followed her hastily and hid behind an unused tv towards the back table. My chest was pounding with each gut wrenching scream, but we didn't bother to move from that spot.
Sofia was covering her mouth as horrified tears streamed down her face. I wasn't sure what my face looked like, but I knew I must've looked terrified. Chinedum definitely looked like she wanted to flee, but it was clear we had to stay in that spot.
It took me a second to notice through the darkness of the classroom, but I saw the unfinished poster lying calmly on the table next to scattered markers. We hadn't even put them away yet.
