SHANESSA WOODLEY WOULD GET MARRIED SOON, time elapsed by rapidly and she wasn't supposed to question her decision. A month, Shanessa only had one more month to brace herself for the future, leaving her past and embarking a new chapter of life with someone who had become a part of her longer than anyone else thought.
But then, a certain Ben Hardy came back and detruded the statement that she did not expect at all from him, especially at a time like this.
Way to ruin a woman's decision.
The sound of a phone ringing marred Shanessa's reverie as her eyes naturally ranged to the device on the table, reaching it simultaneously with a soft smile sheathing her lips.
"Hey, is everything okay?" Eugene questioned, she could almost detect how concerned he was. "You look unhappy in the picture. Is it the gown? Do you not like it? I have another designer who can—"
"I'm fine, Eugene. The gown's perfect, I cannot ask for a more better than this one," Shanessa assured him and plopped her chin on her palm. "I've been stressing out over things lately."
"Leave that part to me, jagiya." A red tint sprayed Shanessa's cheeks momentarily, her heart doing a flip inside. For some reason, whenever Eugene phrased something in Korean, it sounded like music in her ears and wreaked butterflies in her stomach. "Just try to relax and get some rest."
"I'm the one who should tell you that, pretty sure it's late in Seoul."
Eugene chuckled. "I still have a company to take care of, meaning that I have to work extra hard before living a married life."
"Will you keep on working after that?"
"Would you want me to? Your choice." A light yawn was heard from the other side even though Eugene attempted to muffle it. "Your decision is my decision."
"We can discuss it later. I want to tell you to go to sleep, but before that. . ." Shanessa trailed off while her eyes wandered the scenery of New York, biting her bottom lip. "Can I ask you something?"
"Woman, you're gonna be my wife soon," Eugene reminded as a matter of fact, his voice deep and stern. "If you want to ask something—anything, just do it."
A plethora of questions had piled up on Shanessa's mind ever since Eugene returned to her life, however, they were too caught up in the moment that they did not waste any more time getting back together. Either it only spurred of the moment or they indeed needed each other, but everything felt right when her life involved him.
And that was something Shanessa rarely got when she was with Ben.
Instead of filling in about how much they missed each other's lives, Shanessa blurted out the question that irked her the most. "Why are you still looking for me after all these years?"
Unlike her, Eugene would have taken heaps of people's attention and became the center of interest conveniently, surely his god-tier looks would attract many females. So, discovering Shanessa was still the first lead-up when he set foot all by himself in New York was quite baffling for her.
"You know, there'll always be that one story about first true love. The one that never really worked out but you kept your hopes up too much, the one that got away. The one who taught you all you need to know about affection. And the one that until now is still the one you cherish the most," Eugene elaborated, his tone was now soothing and steady. "I don't want to be cheesy and say you complete me because, well, you don't. I don't think anyone needs to be completed by another person. Take a look at us, we're perfectly fine on our own after all these years being apart."
Shanessa wanted to interrupt him there because apparently, she was barely okay during the first few months, but he carried on without biding for her to overhaul.
"I know I might have been crazy saying you were doing just fine all these years, I know you blamed yourself during my long-term absence but, somehow I believe time would cure you. Not entirely, but at least enough for you to wait for my second return. So, I'm not gonna say sorry because I was right. You survived without me. I never called you—that doesn't mean I forget you. I made use of the time to heal my eyes, build myself up so that I could protect you even more," Eugene continued, the warmth in his voice overflowed. "I'm not going to lie to you, Nessa—you definitely fill in some empty spaces within me, and I'm truly grateful for that. Even after all these years, I need you, I still want you. God, it's still you and always been you, that's why I'm here with eyes eternally searching for you."
This was one of those times when Shanessa wished she had something to bark to cover her tongue-tied, but hell, was her mind go blank the minute Eugene ended his deep, laconic confession. Tears claimed its place in her eyes, everything he said warmed her heart. Shanessa felt immensely loved and was it the best thing in the world.
Shanessa sealed her eyes shut and drew a breath out. A vortex of saturnian feelings corralled herself and at that moment, her mind and soul eventually grazed tranquillity. With a cordial smile adorned her lips, Shanessa whispered out gently. "Goodnight, Eugene."
