My sister is next in line for the Alpha title. It was supposed to be me as I was born first, but I have always been different. My name is Rain. My mother and father are the Alphas of the Crimson Shadow pack. Don't ask me where we are in your human terms of countries and unseen borders; I wouldn't have a clue. My pack is the most ruthless and strongest packs there is. We are run by females, the males doing the jobs like hunting, guarding and breeding. Us girls do the planning, attacking and training of the Warriors. We have the lowest number of Omegas in our realm, increasing our strength. This is due to the rules my mother has put in place. Any Omegas must choose: leave and be hunted or stay and be used.
Females- Used for carrying the pups of stronger males who are too busy or violent as Warriors to settle down.
Males- Testers to see how strong enemies are, or messengers during pack-wars.
Both genders suffer badly from these jobs as there are many occupational hazards, which results in our low Omega numbers. Feel free to hate on dear old mum by the way - she's evil. And my sweet sister Snowflake is just as bad. Don't be deceived by their snow white fur as they are certainly no angels.
My father was chosen by my Mother when she found out she was to be Alpha. He was the leading Warrior and Hunter, but you wouldn't know it now. Mum has ruined him. His chocolate brown coat that once made him the apple of every She-Wolf's eye is turning more silver by the second. My own fur is blue, as are my eyes, however most people think they are black - the sign of evil. How they can think I'm evil due to my eye colour but not my mother despite her restraining rules is beyond me. My pelt is considered beautiful due to its extreme rarity, however it is also thought to be dangerous due to the ability it give me - the ability to turn invisible. I can fade into the shadows whilst being watched, and stay hidden from everyone including the Elders who have the power to see where everyone in the pack is at all times - as well as a rough idea of where enemies hide. These abilities along with the fact I was the eldest daughter made me the obvious choice for the next Alpha, but I refuse to humour them. I'm leaving as soon as possible. It is almost my birthday, the shortest day of the year. I will come of age, which means time for the ranking trials; another delightful invention by lovely mumsy.
The Ranking Trials are a set of challenges that will eventually decide your rank in the pack. The Alpha will always be a direct child from the current Alpha (so no grandchildren or nieces) so that it keeps in the family. The chosen Alpha may then chose her own mate from the lucky few, and her Beta. Everyone else will be classed as a Warrior, Forager or Omega.
You have heard about the Omegas. The only way to truly escape the pack. Warriors and Foragers cannot leave. To leave as one of those roles you have to challenge the Alpha - which everybody is too scared to do. I mean, the Alpha is chosen for being the most powerful. And due to so many generations going on, the Alpha is the product of the most powerful, of the most powerful, of the most powerful. To try and attack would be stupid. It would also destroy our whole system. Everybody would get involved if the Alpha did start to falter. The challenger would die.
The Warriors are the military of our pack. They are trained within an inch of their lives. Any failures are instantly banished and killed on return. The Warriors even have their appearance changed - ears clipped and tails docked to minimize injuries in battle.
The Foragers collect the for for our pack and any ingredients the Healer needs. They are painted in shades of green using crushed plants to help them stay hidden from any rivals unless they have coats in black or muddy brown. This also helps them stay hidden during their most secretive duties - spying on other packs.
Father hopes I will become a Forager - someone able to collect information. He has been helping my train with my talent since a pup so I will make it. The thing is... I cant live like this anymore. I would be forced to find a mate instantly when all these wolves are either stupid or arrogant. And then forced to breed next heat? No thanks. I would rather be free, hiding in the shadows, able to choose my mate when I am ready, having fun and flirting until then. I'm not ready to be tamed yet, I want to explore the darker and lighter sides of the forest, see how other packs operate, learn... So Im sorry Daddy, I really am. Yet, I have to fail you. I need to escape. I hope you understand. Becoming an Omega is my only way to escape without starting a fight, which could result in a war within the pack as I know many others feel the same as me. They just aren't prepared to run like I am.
