Under the Oak Tree

The sky was baby blue,
The grass soft and bright.
I was with you,
Absorbing all your light.

We were laying under the oak tree,
Up the canyon
By your house.

The breeze was cool,
The air hot with the beginning of July.
And I can't lie,
It was perfect.

You smiled at me so tenderly.
If I were standing,
You would have had me
Falling to my knees.

Under the oak tree
Is the place where I knew
I truly loved you.

We said it,
And I meant it.
But that moment,
Just you and me
And the breeze,
Made my heart skip a beat.

I could get used to it,
Sitting under that old oak tree.
I could get used to the familiar touch
Of the grass beneath my back
And our intertwined hands
Resting in your lap.

Under the oak tree
Was my heaven on earth.

Under that old oak tree
Was our hideaway.

We found it by mistake,
Going on one of our usual adventures.
You carved our initials into it,
And put a heart around it.
We weren't the first to, either.

I wonder if those initials are still there,
A single B
And a single P,
Only joined together with a plus sign,
And circled with our love.

Sometimes I think about
Going back to that oak tree,
Just to watch the clouds pass by
And think about you and me.

I think about being
Under the oak tree,
When you were with me...

Under the oak tree,
When we were happy...

Under the oak tree,
Just you and me
And the sky.

I had hoped it lasted forever.

It still does,
If only in my memory.
