"Jay?" I turn to my older brother, holding my hand out, "Please hold my hand,"
Jay nods, taking my 8-year-old hand into his larger 8-year-old. Our father had just died, leaving us as essentially with nowhere to go. Officials reluctantly took us in and moved our house to house for what felt like forever, but Jay said was a month and a half. Apparently, they were having trouble finding us a place.
Eventually, our constant moving stopped as we were told the Lightwoods offered to take us in. even jay didn't know much about the lightwoods. Probably why his face is colder than the marble tombs in the silent city. His face made me put on my best Stoney face as well. "We'll manage Jay,"
Jay nodded, a smile finally tugging at the corner of his lips for the first time in weeks, "I know. Stick with me and we'll be okay,"
"I know," I copied. He rolled his eyes.
We stepped through the portal, an older clave member behind us, with a bag each in our hand. We were greeted by an annoyed looking boy, a bored looking girl, a reluctant looking man, and a smiling woman with long black hair. She at least looked somewhat nice.
"These are the Way lands. Johnathan," he pointed his bony finger at my brother, "and (Y/N). Goodbye Robert, Maryse," he nodded his head towards them and stepped back through the portal.
"Welcome kids. This is Alec and Isabelle. Max is napping right now." Maryse smiled. She looked at her kids, nudging them, "Kids! Introduce yourselves," she tried to whisper but Jace and I shared a look.
The boy shook his head, still refusing to look at us, his long fringe falling in his face. The girl sighed, looking up at us, suddenly perking, "It's a girl," she grinned. A smile crept on Roberts' face while mine screwed up in confusion, "I'm Isabelle!" she held her hand out to me, shaking my hand enthusiastically, "That's Alec, he's boring as rune study. Max is cute but whines a lot. And mum makes delicious pancakes! Who's he?"
"My brother," I nudge Jay, but he shrugs me off.
Isabelle grinned, whispering to me "He's cute," I fake threw up and she laughed. Spotting my painted nails her smile seemed to grow, "You like nails?" I nod, "Makeup? Clothes?"
I shrug, self-conscious, "I mean yeah but I wasn't allowed."
"This is gonna be so fun. Bye boys!" Isabelle grabbed my hand, dragging me off somewhere. Jay grabbed my wrist, trying to stop us despite my grin, "Don't worry. I won't kill her," he said nothing. She sighed, "Alec take Jace to do whatever boys do,"
I turned to Jay, giving him a smile, "I'll be fine. I promise. Go train or something," I said before whispering, "Make a friend. We didn't get to before,"
It was true. Id barely ever met someone my own age apart from Jace. I love him but I want to have friends, and he does too.
After small baby steps, Jay managed to make friends with the Lightwoods and the nickname Jace was born. It's actually pretty nice. I, however, dove in the deep end, instantly bonding with Isabelle. We had nicknames, hers being Belle, secret handshake, gossip conversations, and sleepovers. Alec, however, was kinda a different story.
Now he got on good with Jace, great even. They even became parabatai. I'm 16 and he's 17, because my birthday wasn't that long ago and his was soon coming, so we've known each other 7 years. He wasn't mean to me, he was never rude, sometimes he was even funny and would join in on games and conversations. He even gave me extra training to raise my level. But sometimes he just...stopped.
He said he was too old. He was more mature. I was being immature.
He flips flopped all the time. And at this current moment, he was being distant. I got over his constant changes but at this moment in time, it wasn't going well.
I'd been on small missions or joined in on ones with the group but the other day I went on my first serious solo mission. I was to check on high demon activity in a mundane area. They assumed it was pixies or another non-threatening demon due to the lack of reports but the thing that attacked me wasn't.
Despite the silent brothers and runes, my arm was in a cast and my body was scared. I managed to escape the fight and ended up passing out only a few meters away from the institute. I was passed out for hours apparently, waking in the middle of the night. Jace and Belle were both there, although fallen asleep, Alec wasn't. and I never got a reason.
Because of the attack, they had to send a team out to deal with it. Belle and Jace both insisted on going, one being my best friend and the other, my brother. Maryse agreed but Alec was to stay back to finish paperwork. He was salty, to say the least.
Its been an hour and they're still not back. My leg starts to bounce, and I end up pacing the institute trying to let off energy. As I was walking through a corridor I heard a sigh and someone walking over. Still, I jumped when they spoke, "Hey," I turned and saw Alec walk out the training room, "You've passed here three times. You alright?"
"Now you care," I mumble. His eyebrows scrunch in confusion, "They're not back yet," I answer.
His face relaxes and he runs a hand through his hair, "They're okay,"
"You don't know that,"
He raises an eyebrow, "Jace and I are parabatai. They're okay. Try to get your mind off it." I stand silently, looking at the ground. I feel him walk closer but don't look up, "I get it. but you need to relax. We're shadowhunters, it's what we do,"
"That doesn't help," I spit back, "Something almost killed me and now my families out there. Who knows what's going to happen?"
"C'mon," he says, walking away.
"Huh?" I ask but speed up to catch up.
"There's no point freaking yourself out," he tells me, opening the door to the lounge for me. I walk in and turn to him, wanting to cross my arms but can't do it properly, "We're going to watch the movies you like, snack, and get our minds off it. I know how Jace is but my sister," he pauses, "I'm right, I don't want to think about it. get the movie on, I'll get food." And he leaves.
I groan and flop onto the couch. I'd had this conversation with Belle before, about Alec. About how he was hot, which she protested, and I liked him even though he was an ass. Another example is right now.
Putting on a random film, I sit and wait for Alec. Luckily he doesn't take too long and returns with a training bag. I raise an eyebrow. "didn't want anyone to ask," he mumbles, opening the bag and dumping it out on the coffee table. "sorry if it um well eh smells," he cringes a little and chucks the bag behind the couch.
I snigger, "You could wash it," I look at the snacks on the table and sigh. "You got my favorite."
He turns to me, "Isn't that a good thing?"
Nodding, I reply, "Yeah, just ignore me. I'm a bit out of it,"
He smiles, "Aren't you always? It's alright, you picked a good movie,"
Despite actually liking the movie I wasn't watching it, mindlessly munching on snacks. I didn't even realize I was doing anything till Alec asked, "why are you looking at me?"
I blinked a couple times, "Why didn't you visit me?" he looks down at my question, making heat rush to my cheeks. I wanted to stay firm but ended up bringing my knees up to my chest, "It hurt,"
He sighs, shaking his head, "I-I-I'm sorry. It's just- its- I couldn't look at you. Not like I was mad but. I couldn't see you hurt like that. I found you and I just couldn't handle it,"
"Why? You don't even like me." I sigh.
"I do. Its- look I'm just bad at the whole socializing thing. I'm not Izzy," her name reminds me of the situation even more. I look down, fighting back tears, "I'm sorry," he told me. I heard a very light sigh and felt the couch dip beside me. Alec's arm went around my shoulder. Despite all rational thought, I lean back. "I'm here. I know I'm not what you want but I'm here. Tell me what you need,"
I sigh, "Answers?" I look up as he shakes his head, disappointed himself, "A hug?"
"That I can do," being extra careful of my arm, Alec wraps his arms around me, hugging me for the first time.
"Thanks," I murmur, turning to him, leaning my head on his shoulder.
I don't know how long we sit like that for. At one point I feel the tears leave my eyes against my will. Alec rubs my back, kissing the top of my head, but saying nothing.
Eventually, its interrupted by someone announcing, "What did we miss?" I basically fly up to Jace and Belle, engulfing each in a one arm hug in turn. "What's the matter?" Jace asked, concern written all over his face.
"I was scared," I mumbled.
Jace wrapped his arm over my shoulder, pulling me closer, "We're okay, promise," he turned to Alec, "Thanks. Didn't know you had feelings,"
Alec scoffed, crossing his arms. Belle sighed, "So, is this a thing yet or what?" Alec and I both look confused as Belle crossed her arms with a huff, "You together yet?" everyone else in the room got a shocked look on their face, Jace the most. "(Y/N) likes Alec-"
"Hey!"
"Alec likes (Y/N)"
"Hey!" Alec protested.
"What?" Jace's arm dropped as he glared at Alec.
"So," Belle continued, "just quit beating around the bush and start dating."
Alec and I both stammer something unintelligible when Jace steps in. "No. (Y/N) isn't allowed to date-"
"What?"
"And especially not Alec," he spoke over me.
"Um excuse you. First of all," I told him, "I'll like who I like, kiss who I kiss, and date who I date. My life, my choice. Second of all what's wrong with Alec? He's your parabatai. Why can't I date him?"
Jace's face contorted in disgust "You actually like him?!"
"Um-" I glance at Alec, face heating up, "Yeah. Kinda. Like a lot,"
"Told you, Alec," Belle grinned. Alec hides a smile by looking down. "He's even blushing," Belle joked, making Alec's blush worse. "Okay, Friday, 4 o'clock, you two are going on a date. Everyone agreed."
Alec and I both nod our heads, shy smiles hiding the inner grin, while Jace made an indignant Noise "This is not happening!"
