THERE WAS A BEAT OF SILENCE ROCKING BACK AND FORTH IN THE AERIAL, DROWSINESS ALMOST BARELY BRUSHED OFF SHANESSA'S ENTIRE SOUL AS SHE STARED AT BEN WHO WAS CURRENTLY WHIPPING UP A BOWL OF RAMYEON FOR HER. The girl had no idea when was the last time they did this, visiting each other's place at the time that should be used to get into a deep slumber without having to feel awkward.
After three months of not contacting each other, only leaving one or two comments on their social media accounts and met for a brief moment, Ben eventually razed down his walls and attempted to fix what was broken between them. Though on Shanessa's part, she did not entirely ignore Ben because they talked to each other on a daily basis through Bumblebee.
But, it didn't feel the same because Shanessa was the one who longed to talk to him, not Bumblebee.
Upon saw Ben standing in front of her door exactly fifteen minutes after he sent his last message while holding a bouquet of Primrose, which had a meaning I can't live without you — one that was inversely proportional to the meaning of Butterfly Weed, Shanessa's heart ached. He still remembers how to answer that.
It was their thing, something that only Ben and Shanessa could understand. When words were not able to be strung and out of their lips, the language of flowers was another option for them to delicately interact.
After a couple of minutes, Ben finally placed the bowl in front of her as hot steam instantly flew up into the air. "So, what's up?"
Leave me, it was the meaning of Butterfly Weed and Ben knew right away that Shanessa needed a shoulder to cry on. There was something different with Shanessa, starting from her who was greatly reluctant to check her social media accounts until she took several weeks off from work. For him, it was easy to read what was bothering her, but he just wanted her to be honest with him like the old times.
"Nothing." An aggravated sigh fled out of Shanessa's lips as she stirred her ramyeon with chopsticks. "I'll get over it in the morning, I just probably need some more sleep."
"Ness," Ben breathed out, his tone stashed doldrums and longing for her to open up to him. "Something's bothering you, and it's not just me who feels it, but Shai as well. What is it? You can tell me anything."
Ben attempted to pull her back to the pace before that Christmas Day, but it was as if something was holding herself back to get them on the same page again.
"It's nothing serious, Ben," Shanessa flailed her hands dismissively and pulled the tip of her lips upward. "I think I just miss you. Don't you miss me?"
Terribly, but with her eyes claiming that she was still covering up something, Ben parenthesized his intention to say it out loud. Everything had been different since the night he kissed her, and since that day he faced Shanessa's silent treatment for no reason. If Ben was someone who was completely oblivious and ignorant, perhaps he would not question it all, but he was truly aware of the change in their friendship.
Ben gave her a weak smile. "You do know I'm only one call away."
"Yeah, and one building away," Shanessa mentioned, smirking lightly. "I still can't believe you moved into the building across mine."
"Well, Bohemian Rhapsody forced me to do so. There have been many events held here in the United States," Ben replied as he snatched the chopsticks from her before feeding himself a strand of ramyeon, earning a glare from her.
Swatting his hands away from her favorite food, Shanessa formed another sentence to keep the conversation going. "It's still weird, you know because you got a place on the same floor and perfectly face-to-face with my flat. We're practically neighbors!"
Because I want to make sure you arrive at home safely. I want to make sure you're okay. I want to make sure you don't get any troubles before going to bed. I want to make sure Tom or any other guy doesn't mess with you when they come to visit. I want to make sure that I'm your first choice whenever you feel down. I want to make sure I'm here for you all the damn time.
It sounded extremely overprotective and was a kind of stalker, but Ben deeply cared for her. For a short amount of time, Ben had gained infinite comfort from herself and their friendship had brought heaps of colors into his life. To say the least, Shanessa had the same worth as his mom and Katriona, which made her someone he would protect with his life. However, would he dismantle the honest reasons out loud? Absolutely not.
"You see, there's actually a girl I met online," Ben drawled, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly. "And she lives in the same building as you."
And at that moment, Shanessa greatly despised Tom and Joe for they were the ones who accidentally sent Bumblebee's address to him and trapped her into a more complicated situation. The spectrum of their friendship would grow more distant than this if he found out who Bumblebee really was immensely frightening her. Shanessa wouldn't avow herself that she was Bumblebee. Not now, not ever.
Not if it had the possibility of ruining their relationship.
Not after Shanessa had revealed too much of her fondness for someone who was none other than Ben himself.
Every hint Shanessa spilled on him through Bumblebee was real based on their friendship, based on her own feelings. It was a complete relief if Ben was not aware of it all, but she secretly doubted he was that ignorant. There was, at least, one question scurrying around in his head on why what happened to Bumblebee was quite similar to his current struggles.
Shanessa couldn't afford him to know this whole crush thing and made him unable to look at her the same way as he always did. Because like it or not, their friendship was more important than her feelings.
So Shanessa did the dumbest, senseless thing in the world, foolishly thinking that it was the best option she had.
