The storm was near now. I wasn't even listening to my pre-algebra teacher anymore. I just kept staring at the storm, wondering how much longer I had until the storm hit.
One Hour Later.......
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!
The school alarm rang. This is Principal Santos, the intercom said. Everyone needs to take shelter immediately!
Someone tugged on my arm and I turned around to see Leo standing there. "Come on Nikki," he pleaded. "We need to go."
He pulled me out of the now empty classroom and down the crowded hallway. We turned right a couple times then stopped at a large brass door. Leo looked behind him to see if anyone was watching.
I can't believe I've never noticed this door before, I thought.
"We need to get into the basement. It's the only place where we'll be safe," he whispered into my ear.
"The school has a basement?" I asked, shocked.
"Yes, a secret one. I don't think even the principal knows about it."
"Well, then, what are we waiting for?"
Leo looked behind him once more then opened the door. There were stairs leading down to the basement. The stairs were dark, dusty, and dirty. The door shut behind us.
"You do have a phone, right?" Leo asked me. I pulled mine out to show him.
"Good."
We continued descending down the stairs until we reached the bottom. I looked around at my surroundings. The walls were a dusty gray and the floor was covered in dirt. There was a desk with lots of papers, but I couldn't see the words from where I was standing. There was a faint light coming from a lamp on the desk. Good, I thought, that means there is electricity down here. And in one corner there was a cabinet with guns and weapons. I walked over to it.
"What is this here for?" I asked, to no one in particular.
"I don't know." Leo's voice can from over at the desk. I walked over to him. He was reading some of the papers.
"A lot of these are talking about the prediction of the apocalypse. Do you think that's why this stuff is here?" He gestured to the cabinet.
"Maybe--"
The ground shook. Leo and I crashed down onto the floor like a stack of papers on a desk.
