The evening sun had started settling down, casting a golden shade on the university grounds. Classes were out of session for the hour, students making their way out of different buildings to get to other classes or back to the warmth of their dorms.
However a few couldn't help but stop and stare at three certain students who were unfortunately calling for unwanted attention.
"Please!"
"No, you aren't coming," Yeona said as she lightly pushed the boy away, "And even if I did say yes, you aren't bring that camera with you!
"But I want to get the best shot!" Haechan pouted, securely holding his precious and expensive camera bag in his arms, "How else am I supposed to get famous on Twitter?"
Yeona restrained herself from rolling her eyes, "Listen Haechan, there isn't going to be a fight. I'm sure Taeyong called me over because Eunmi needs help or something."
"Or she's trying to start beef with you. If a fight does happen I have to be there! Don't you care about my future?" Haechan cried in desperation. Like a child, he fidgeted in his spot, lightly shaking his bag in agitation. He seemed very keen on coming along with Yeona, not wanting to miss this moment.
She snorted lightly, crossing her arms, "Is that all you care about? You aren't even concerned for my safety?"
Haechan's expression dropped for a second, "Oh right... well yeah I guess, to a certain extent."
"Don't worry shorty, if anything happens to Yeona I'll protect her." The male beside Yeona spoke up, throwing an arm around her shoulder.
Haechan scoffed at Lucas, taking high offense to his given nickname, "Short? Me? Yeona and I are literally the same height. If I'm short then what is she?
Her eyes lifted to Lucas who was staring down at her with an amused expression, "Fun size."
"Okay I'm not that short." Yeona mumbled, shoving Lucas away from her. He lightly chuckled and pulled her into a hug, resting his chin on her head as he tried to bring up her mopey spirit, "I meant it in a good way, Yeona."
Haechan fake gagged at the two, "Gross. Oh by the way Lucas, she's a stupid one," He pointed out, but quickly held his arms up in surrender when Yeona sent a middle finger his way, "Just letting you know what you're getting yourself into."
Yeona slightly nudged Lucas, creating a bit of distance between each other. With her pointed finger shaking in Haechan's face she told, "We're leaving, and I better not see you sneaking up behind us." She then jerked her head at Lucas, "Lets go, daddy long legs."
"Johnny isn't going to be happy if he heard that from you!" Haechan called out to her, but was ignored when the two had already started their way out of campus, Lucas throwing an arm around her as they exited the grounds.
They sauntered their way over to Dear Dream, casually conversing every now and then. Soon after the short walk, the two had arrived at the café. Lucas removed his arm off her shoulder and instead took her hand in his. She didn't bother to protest, or question it. Her hands were cold and having his warm hand around hers made her feel at par.
But before the two could enter, they noticed someone sitting down at the deserted patio tables, shivering in place.
Yeona squinted her eyes at the person not too far from her, making out their figure, "Is that... Eunmi?"
Their head slowly shot up, looking over in their direction. Once their face had come into view, the two confirmed it was the said girl.
"Eunmi? What are you doing out here, it's freezing." Yeona asked as they approached her. Eunmi could only shrug, mumbling to herself that she was waiting for her.
"Where's um, that guy that begins with the letter T?" Lucas asked her cautiously. Yeona had told him all about the 'break up' and was worried that if either one of them mentioned Taeyong's name she would have another breakdown, and that was the last thing they wanted.
Eunmi paused before answering, glancing down at their intertwined hands, "Inside."
Yeona followed her gaze down to their hands, making her wince inwardly. She casually brushed off his hand and cleared her throat, "How about we go inside? It's too cold to talk out here."
The girl nodded, following the two inside the warm heated café. A strong aromatic scent of coffee hitting their senses as soon as they stepped in. Yeona pushed Lucas towards the counter, where Taeyong was currently waiting in line for while the two girls searched for a spot for the four of them.
"So... what did you want to talk about?" Yeona asked as soon as they sat down. She watched Eunmi across from her, fiddling with her jacket sleeves as her arms rested on the table.
"You probably already know but, he... he said he wanted to take a break."
This obviously wasn't news to Yeona, but she could see the pain in Eunmi's eyes, sensing she was fighting back tears. Yeona nodded solemnly, "I'm sorry..."
"I thought we were doing fine, he was always so sweet to me, you know?" She swallowed a lump in her throat, not wanting to tear in public again, "It wasn't until two weeks ago, I could tell something was off, but... I didn't think much for it."
"We even fought the past weekend, over the silliest thing ever." Eunmi let out a dry laugh, recalling the phone call that early Saturday morning. It was simple to say her weekend had been ruined because of that one fight.
Yeona didn't have the heart to say anything, remembering everything that happened that weekend. Even she knew that spending time with Taeyong didn't feel right, even though they were strictly friends. The thought slowly came to her head, was it because of her that the two were fighting?
The first that popped into her head was the 'almost kiss', guilt clouded her every time she thought about it. Because of that, she tried distancing herself from Taeyong. Keyword, tried. He somehow managed to find a way to excuse all of her excuses for not wanting to hangout with him.
The two would almost always spend time together by the end of it.
What she didn't realize until now was that the more time he spent with her, the less time he spent with Eunmi.
She didn't wanted them to break up, nor was she trying to get them to that point. She couldn't fathom the idea of being the sole reason the two were at this rocky stage of their now broken relationship.
"I don't think he loves me anymore," Eunmi's voice quieted by the end, it was probably the hardest thing she had ever said so far, "I... I think he likes someone else."
Yeona's pulse picked up, she wondered if the girl had any idea what went down this weekend, and was just waiting for one of them to come clean.
Eunmi was a nice girl, she was just like how Taeyong first described her. Though she could be a little expressive whenever she's around him, but who could blame her. All Eunmi wanted was to last with Taeyong, and it was clear that she truly treasured their relationship, not wanting to give up on them.
Eunmi looked up at the girl in front of her, "What do you think Yeona, do you think he likes someone else?"
She thought for a minute, turning her attention towards the two boys. They were waiting for their order, Lucas trying to start a conversation with Taeyong, a huge smile on his face. Though Taeyong didn't seem interested as his fingers tapped heavily on the tabletop, slowly growing impatient that their drinks weren't being made any faster. "I don't know, he's a hard one to read."
Eunmi followed Yeona's gaze towards the boys, before looking back at her, "You and Lucas look cute together."
This cause Yeona's head to snap back in her direction, startled by her sudden remark. Awkward chuckles escaped her lips, "W-What?"
"I don't know, it seems that he likes you," Eunmi shrugged lightly, "Ever since you guys met, he's changed his ways. He started going to his lectures again and I haven't seen him around other girls lately. I think he's really trying hard for you."
Yeona wondered how Eunmi even knew these facts about Lucas in the first place, but ended up believing she got the word from Taeyong.
Could she ever see Lucas being more than a friend? It was a possibility, there was no denying she didn't have that small feeling towards him. And he was trying his hardest to gain back what they lost for that short moment. She'd take it into consideration if the question ever came back to her.
The quiet conversation between the two girls had come to an end when they heard Lucas' laughter coming from behind. They looked back to see the two boys approaching their table. But once they reached, they both stopped next to Yeona's chair.
"What are you doing?" Taeyong asked Lucas quietly.
"About to sit down?" Lucas raised an eyebrow at him, not understanding the meaning behind his question.
"Let me sit there." Taeyong said sharply, referring to the open seat beside Yeona.
"What why? Sit next to your girlfriend."
Taeyong furrowed his brows at him, "I don't think you get what 'taking a break' means."
"Oh come on," Lucas sent him a smug look, "You both need to work things out, the same way I want to work things out with Yeona, for the better."
Taeyong shook his head, "There's nothing for us to work out."
As the two boys quietly argued about the seating arrangement, Eunmi and Yeona couldn't help but watch on, wondering if they knew that they could hear everything they were saying. Yeona took a peek at the girl across from her, noticing the dreary expression written on her face. She knew what she was feeling, unwanted that neither of them wanted to sit next to her.
"Ahem," Yeona cleared her throat, loud enough to bring their attention towards her, "If you guys would like to sit down, that'd be nice."
The boys locked eyes once again, neither of them wanting to move away from the seat. What felt like ten or twenty seconds had past, Taeyong blinked, losing what seemed to be a mini staring contest. Lucas threw him a triumphant smirk and sat down beside Yeona.
Taeyong let out a long sigh under his breath and hesitantly sat down beside the quiet girl, pushing the drink in his hand towards her direction, "Here."
"So did you guys finish up your little conversation?" Lucas asked as he draped his arm behind Yeona's chair. She nodded after grabbing her drink that Lucas put down in front of her, "Sort of, but if anything we can always message each other."
"Is there vanilla in here?" Eunmi asked after she took a sniff of the iced coffee in her hand. The way her nose crinkled soon after clearly indicated that there was.
Taeyong didn't glance at her, "There is, I was hoping you wouldn't mind. I just thought you should start getting used to the idea of change."
Eunmi lightly shook her head, doing her best to ignore his comment. She clicked the plastic lid back on the cup and slid it towards the middle of the table, "Well I don't want it. You know I hate vanilla."
"You hate a lot of things." Taeyong mumbled quietly into his straw.
"Oh I'll take it!" Yeona reached for the coffee and pushed her own untouched drink towards Eunmi, "I love vanilla in my coffee."
Eunmi couldn't help but give Taeyong side-glance, her thoughts whirling through her head as she stayed quiet, taking Yeona's drink in her hand.
Lucas, who had been watching the whole scene silently in his spot, decided it was a good time to save the awkward atmosphere from becoming any worse. "So, we're hosting a party next Friday. You guys are invited, as per usual."
"Sure, I'll be there." Eunmi replied monotonously as she scrolled through her phone, trying to distract herself from the boy beside her. Taeyong nodded his head, obviously confirming his invite.
Yeona shifted her eyes to Lucas', smiling brightly at him, "I can't wait, I can tell this party will be a good one."
"Of course," Lucas stared at her sweet, warming smile. Returning the gesture, his own lips turned up into his usual smug grin, "It'll be the best one yet."
