I went down in a valley
and felt her warm around me
a river flowed through
and many times before I
walked the bridge across
a green expanse far from
the danger of swift water
cold water
and I came up out of the same valley
barely different, barely new
I went down in a valley
slow and felt her warm to me
and promise she’d always be there
and she had been
a river wandered through and she called me by my name
and I answered I had no choice I wanted no choice
she called me down to the bank
and I looked up at the bridge
this time the saints thankfully sold me down the river
the cool water washed my worries
she was my baptism
then I knew the bridge was a trick
and I splashed and came out dry
because it was her embrace
that made me different and new
and never shall I choose the bridge
when the water is cool
