"We're here!" Josh claimed as the car slowed to a halt.
"Is Rosie allowed in there?" I asked calmly.
He chuckled. "Of course! Now let's go." With that, he climbed out of the car and a few seconds later, my door swung open. First he helped me out of the car, and then Rosie. He led us towards what I'm pretty sure was his house. I heard a door swing open before Josh spoke again. "Mom, dad, I'm home!" He called out.
"In the kitchen, dear!" A light, happy female voice called out. Must be his mom. He started to pull me forwards, then turned left and right. Josh pushed open what seemed to be a swinging door. "How was school?" The woman didn't seem to acknowledge me.
Josh replied casually. "Not bad. Hope you don't mind I have a friend over." His hand rested on the small of my back.
"Oh, hello! I'm Angela, Josh's mom." She greeted. Josh grabbed my wrist gently and lifted it up until it met with a cold one, about the same size as mine.
"I'm Isabelle." I told her calmly.
I heard her chuckle to herself. "Take off your sunglasses, darling!" Suddenly, my sunglasses were removed by someone. I'm guessing it was her.
Josh intercepted. "Mom, she needs those." His voice was filled with worry.
"Oh, darling! What's wrong with your eyes?" Was she really oblivious to the fact that I was blind? Huh...
"Mrs.Evans, I'm blind." My voice was calm and collected. I'd said that line so many times, just with different names.
A gasp escaped Mrs.Evan's lips. "I'm so sorry! I didn't know, really!" After telling her it was fine, and happened a lot, she carried on to say, "You two can just go on downstairs, then." At that, Josh led me out of the room and carefully down some steps. After a minute of walking straight ahead, he told me to sit. Cautiously, I turned around and sat on the soft bed behind me. Memory foam shaped around me.
"Want to play twenty questions?" I asked, not sure what to do.
"Sure, I'll go first!" He cheered, sounding almost too excited to play. "What's your favorite colour?"
I giggled. "Last time I watched the sunset, I claimed my favourite colour was that mix of orange, pink and purple. I was five, but I still remember those colours perfectly." My eyes closed when I spoke, and I pictured the dissapearing sun on the horizon. "Do you play any sports?"
"I'm the captain of the hockey team, I play basketball and volleyball." Josh's voice had calmed down now that we were playing. "How did you become blind?"
"Two months before my sixth birthday, the whole family was driving down to the states to visit my aunt and uncle. It had been pouring rain all over the southern part of the province, and so the roads were slippery. My dad tried stopping at a stop sign, but the brakes just wouldn't work. He tried, over and over again. Suddenly, a semi-truck collided with the side I was sitting on. I recieved an injury to the head. I forget what part of the brain it was that was damaged, but ever since I hadn't been able to see a thing. My parents were devastated, even more than I was. Being an energetic five year old that can't see a thing was tough. Learning to do everything all over again, learning braille and all. It was hard." A sigh escaped my lips. I needed to stop there. I'd cry if I spoke any further. Josh wrapped me into a hug, and I melted into his big, warm arms.
