Mysterious Girl

We've got four months left to go before the school ends. Four months before graduation. Three months and twenty-eight days before prom. And I'm here in the library, stuck with a pile of history books.

My friends didn't even bothered to go here anymore. This was our favorite spot in the library. Our used to be favorite table. We usually hangout here more often, reading books or gossiping whatsoever. But now, they were out there, giving their time and attentions to their boyfriends. Never really thinking about their best friend being alone in the library with nothing but empty chairs and a stock of books.

I took out my phone and sighed when I received a text from Leigh Anne and Jesy, asking me if where have I been.

Right now, they've probably forgotten where our- I mean, my favorite place to chill out. I'm not mad at them though, nor disappointed, because I know right then at the start that someday one of us will meet new friends, maybe boyfriends, and forget that we even bonded together as best friends. Our attentions would be divided, which was happening right at this moment. Never forget that life goes on and on.

But one day, I swear, they will break up and get hurt. And there, they will realize that I'm still here, waiting for them with open arms,

Waiting for them to know that nothing had changed.

Even though it hurts me to see them broken.

*

There was this boy.

Tall.

Fair.

Handsome.

Cute.

He's Sam Craske. The one who stole my heart- well, actually there were three of them, but let's start with him.

He was well-known for his crazy dancing skills. He got all the girls follow at his heels like lost puppies. Sometimes me, too, but I know better than to get near him. I just admired him from afar, watching and hoping that someday he'll get to notice my existence.

That's what every fangirl would want.

My feelings for him started when I landed my eyes on him for the first time. I know. It's cliche. But that's what happened. It was like love at first site- Again, cheesy.

I had Homeroom with him.

And right now, I was staring at him across the room. Admiring his every little features-

"Ey. Hey. Yow?" A voice snapped me out of my thoughts and brought me to my senses. I look up, only to be met by a pair of blue eyes that was searching something deep into my soul. She broke into a smile. Only then I noticed that our faces was dangerously close to each other. I glared at her and shoved her chest. She snorted and leaned back to her chair that was unfortunately beside me.

"If you're going to be like that, you'll get caught." She said.

I know what she was trying say. And I Don't Care.

The bell rang and we all stood up,  leaving one by one. I didn't get a chance to catch up with her because she was already gone when I look back. I sighed.

When I got out of the room, the halls were already packed with students making their way to their next class. That's when I saw him. His thick, curly hair and green eyes are unmistakable. He was walking towards me. Well, not to me though. He just walked pass by me and gave me a nod.

Wait, did he just-

I look back at him, eyes widened. Did that just happened?

Oh my gosh.

Harry Styles just noticed me.

One of my crushes freaking noticed me!

No. This is wrong.

I know he's gay, but why did I feel like my heart would explode any minute now? My feet felt like jelly as I walk. And-

"Ouch!"

"Oops, sorry!"

She catches me before my butt would make contact with the floor.

Shit, the butterflies only gotten worse.

I almost embarrassed myself in front of her.

"Careful next time, okay? We don't want you having fractures, don't we?" I nodded, feeling my cheeks heat up. I hear her sighed. "Might as well go to your next class. Just be careful next time, mysterious girl." And then just like earlier, she was off.

Mysterious girl- that's what they call me here, because I'm mysterious as hell. I just don't want anybody get attached to me. Jesy and Leigh Anne was an exemption at first, but then now I realized that I shouldn't have allowed them to enter my life, knowing that they would leave me with broken promises. Sisters before misters? Bruh, forget about that. Nothing surely stays forever.

People will eventually change when the time comes.

"So to say that, line AB has a centimeter of twenty-eight." She said, finishing our seat work. And in all honesty, she was doing it all wrong.

I gave her a look. "Because all radius are congruent! And our problem here is finding the centimeter of the hypotenuse." I argued. Maths is really going to be her death. "Which is why we are going to use the Pythagorean Theorem." I wrote the formula down and gave the paper to her after. Did I do something wrong to have her as my partner?

"C two equals to A two plus B two," She read out loud like a child reading her first book. Was she kidding? "Okay, smarty pants. Show me how it's done." I glared at her.

"C squared equals A squared plus B squared," I corrected. "That 'two' you were saying are what we called exponents."

She rolled her eyes. "Yah, yah. I get it."

"Exponents are symbols that is written above and to the right of a number to show how many times the number is to be multiplied by itself." A voice said behind us. My heart instantly hammered. I didn't have to look back to know who it was.

"Elliot, leave us alone." She groaned.

Jed Elliot. The last person I had a crush on. He's good at playing the base guitar, and that caught my attention. I shouldn't have like Jed because first, he won't reciprocate my feelings. Second, he once tried to take Leigh Anne on a date but got rejected. Third, he had a massive crush on Jesy, but Jesy is taken so.

Out of the three persons I liked, Jed was the one who had me like head over heels for him. It was just a little crush that turns out to be a massive one when the time passed, and he didn't fail to amaze me everyday. Even though it wasn't for me he was giving an effort to impress.

"I know what exponent is," she deadpanned. "Just go back to your own work, and let us be."

"As you say,"

No.

No!

He just got to explain what exponent was to this naive girl beside me and that's it?

"You have a smart partner by the way."

Did he just complemented me? Me? OH MY GOD. This has to be my lucky day! Compose yourself, Thirlwall. We don't want him getting scared of you, don't we?

I felt her arm weigh on my shoulders and pulled me closer towards her a little. I frowned, shaking off her arm.

"Yeah," she agreed, then leaned in and whispered, "smart ass beauty." She lets go of me with a low chuckle. Alright, time to get her lazy ass working on our math problem.

I can feel her staring at me as I work with the equation, it made me feel self-conscious a little bit. I stayed quiet until I almost finished my solutions. I smiled to myself, feeling a little proud that I went all through this, but I wouldn't allow that she wouldn't do her side of this seat work. I faced her with a definitive smile. I'm sure she can finish this, it's so easy to solve even the seventh graders can answer it less than fifteen seconds.

I pointed my pen to the paper, gesturing for her to answer the last part of our math problem. Her face goes blank as she took the paper in her hands. There was a moment of silence before she spoke, "I can't do this."

What? Was she kidding?

I gave her a look. "Are you joking? It's easy as slicing a cake-"

"No."

"But-"

"I can't do square root, okay?" She blurted out. I blinked at her, still not believing what she had said. She look deep into my eyes, searching for something. I must look like stupid right now- a laughingstock. She then turn her gaze away and buried her face in her hands.

"But, at least, you could try..?"

She lifted her head, turn to gaze at me, then smiled shyly. There was something about her smile that mades me smile, too.

"Fine, you gorgeous wiseass." She snorted and picked up her pen, ready to jot down the answer. I was mentally cheering encouragements at her and fought the urge to jump and hug her. "The square root of a hundred forty-four is.." she bit her bottom lip, "three thousand four hundred and thirty-six." She wrote it down and encircled the numbers.

My eyes widen. My head felt like lead. My whole world felt as if it was falling down to an endless pit. I was expecting too much from her.

She faced me back with a sheepish smile. Jed just bursted out laughing at the back, getting unwanted attentions from the whole class, including our math teacher. She wasn't looking so happy as she walk towards Jed. Uh-oh. He'll get detention because of me. I can't watch this. I'm such an idiot!

"I-I think I should finish this." I informed her and took the paper.

"I told you I can't do square root." She said as a matter of factly.

"Perrie, it's twelve."

"Dunno,"

"Ugh, you're such-"

"Told you so." She shrugged.

Right then and there, I decided to help this gorgeously dumb blonde woman how to do square root whether she likes it or not.
