Thomas' POV
When I woke up, I left the tent and decided to go for a walk. No one stopped me. No one did anything but send me sad smiles and small nods.
I clutched the necklace Newt gave me in my hand as I walked along the beach. I had barely walked 10 feet from camp when I heard a scream that made my heart stop. I turned around to see some people running towards the caves above the camp.
"The hell," I mumbled as I tried to see what or who had made that sound. I started to head back to camp when two little kids ran up to me.
"Are you Thomas?" The little boy stuttered, holding his sister's hand.
"Yes, I am." I said, my eyes softening at how scared these two little kids looked.
"We were told that you could help us. We need your help," the little boy explained.
"Okay," I said kneeling in the sand in front of them. "How can I help?"
"Our mommy," the little girl said softly.
"You can't find your mommy?" I asked. I smiled when they shook their heads.
"We know where she is," the little boy corrected in a duh tone.
"She's sick," the little girl said as tears formed in her eyes.
My heart dropped when I put it together. Their "sick" mom was the one whose scream I had just heard. I stood up and brushed the sand from my pants.
"Why don't you guys take me to her?" They nodded as they turned on their heels and started to run towards camp. I let out a small laugh as I started to jog to catch up to them.
They were silent as they led me through camp and up to the caves. I couldn't help but smile as I noticed how the whole way up the mountain, the little boy never let go of his sister's hand.
"You know," I said after they had finally stopped running. "I don't know your names."
"I'm Logan. This is my twin sister Laura. She doesn't talk much," he shrugged.
"How old are you guys?"
"Four," Logan said.
"How long have you guys been in the camp?"
"I don't know," Logan shrugged. "We were three when we left our house."
"Your house?" I asked, getting confused.
"It wasn't really our house," Laura said softly. "That's just what mommy called it."
"Where was it?" I asked, worried I was going to ask too much.
"It was really dirty," Logan giggled. "The floor was just like it was outside. Mommy called it our fort in the woods." My heart stopped when I realized what they really meant.
They were in hiding.
"How long were you at your fort?"
"Mommy says only a few months. We had just turned three when the good guys found us." Logan said twirling Laura making her giggle.
"The good guys?"
"Yeah. He said his name was Vincent."
I didn't ask any more questions as we continued to walk up the mountain. When we got to the cave, there were two guys standing guard.
"Kids," one of the guards sighed. "We told you, you can't keep coming here."
"It's alright, Henry." Vincent said as he came out of the cave. "Thomas," he smiled softly when he saw me.
I smiled as he came up and gave me a hug. "How are you feeling?" He asked as we pulled apart.
"As good as can be expected," I shrugged.
He nodded before looking down at the two kids who were both eagerly bouncing on their toes. "Mark, why don't you take the kids in to see her?"
Mark nodded and signaled for Logan and Laura to follow him, but they were already running inside.
"Those poor kids" Vincent sighed as we watched the kids run into the cave. I just nodded, unsure of what to say. "What did they say when they found you?"
"They said they needed my help. That their mother was sick."
"She was bitten right before we got them here," Vincent explained.
"Really?" I asked, not hiding my surprise.
"I don't know how to explain it, Thomas, but she hasn't changed yet."
"How long has it been since she was bitten?"
"Almost six months."
"Six months and she still hasn't turned?" I bit my lip when he nodded. "That's. . . Not normal. I mean, back in the Maze people would go through the changing almost instantly. Six months without any. . ."
"Well," Vincent cleared his throat. "Not anything. You can see her veins and she coughs up black blood, but that's it."
He looked at the cave before looking back at me. "It's like she is fighting it off, Thomas."
"That's not possible. Is it?"
"I don't know. I really don't know."
"Can I see her?" I asked suddenly, surprising even myself.
"Sure," he said putting his hand on my shoulder and leading me inside. I held my breath as we walked down the cold hallway that was lit by torches.
"How come you guys have kept her all the way up here?" I asked, breaking the silence.
"Well, we weren't sure when she was going to turn and we couldn't risk anyone else getting bitten."
"This is probably going to sound insensitive, but why didn't you guys kill her when you noticed she was infected?"
"Because," he sighed. "Her twins were barely three years old when we found them and she was bitten under my watch. Those kids already lost their father to the flare, I couldn't let them lose their mother too."
As he said that, we rounded the corner and my heart stopped. Logan and Laura were sitting in front of, but a safe distance away from, a woman who was chained to the wall.
You could see her veins and the corners of her mouth were stained black. She was pale and her eyes were bloodshot. If you looked past her appearance, she seemed normal.
She wasn't yelling or fighting or trying to hurt anyone. Even though there were chains wrapped around her wrists and ankles, she was sitting with her legs crossed and her hands folded in her lap. There was a small smile on her chapped lips as she listened to her kids tell her about their day.
"Then we met Thomas!" I heard Logan cheer as he pointed across the room at me. I lifted my hand and waved, feeling awkward.
"Oh," she said as she turned to look up at me.
"Y/N this is Thomas," Vincent introduced. "Thomas this is Y/N."
"Thomas is going to help you get better," Logan said happily making her eyes widen. She looked away from me and back down at her son with a sad smile on her face.
"Baby, we've talked about this. Mommy isn't going to get better." Her voice broke at the end of her sentence.
"Actually," I cleared my throat as I stepped closer. She looked up at me, confusion clearly on her face.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the vile that we had stolen from Janson.
"Is that," Vincent gasped, not finishing his question.
"Yeah," I stuttered. "We. . . I stole it from the lab before you guys saved me. Maybe we can find a way to duplicate it or something."
"I think I know someone who might be able to do that."
