for TWO months we have been watching from our screens the flirting between bela king and sean giambrone, and now we have to ask: what exactly is going on between the two of them?

lucas rolled over onto his back, throwing his phone next to him on the bed. how he ended up in this situation ─ telling the girl he loved that he wanted her to be happy with another guy ─ he didn't know. but life, in all its mysteriousness, was cruel and merciless, and he had accepted it.
the front doorbell rang, and lucas groaned. he continued lying on his bed until it rang a second time, and then a third, and a fourth, until the doorbell continued shrilling nonstop. he sighed, getting off his bed and walking downstairs.
he swung the front door open, and on his front porch stood melanie white. her fingertips were hovering over the doorbell button, and upon seeing him, she dropped her hand in smug satisfaction.
lucas furrowed his brows. "mel? what are you─"
"just spare me the bullshit and admit it already," she immediately interjected, pushing past him nonchalantly as she entered his home.
he stood stunned at his front door, muttering something sarcastic under his breath like, "oh, okay, sure, come on in." melanie heard his remark and rolled her eyes.
"what exactly am i supposed to be admitting?" lucas asked, following her into his kitchen.
she swivelled around on her foot, looking thoughtfully at lucas. "admit how much you hate the idea of bela and sean being together," she said simply.
lucas cocked his head in surprise. "what? n-no, i'm happy for them. i told bela to go after sean in the first place. and either way, they're not even together. yet," he responded.
"because you thought you were being the bigger person by letting her go, but now that she actually could be gone, it hurts. and you thought you were okay with it, but you're not," she said.
he glanced at mel. "i want her to be happy," he said slowly.
"seriously, who are you trying to convince here?" she uttered, raising her eyebrows at him. "you know, it's okay to be selfish sometimes, and it's okay to want things for yourself. it doesn't make you a bad person. the only bad thing you'd be doing is not admitting to yourself the truth. and why would you want to live the rest of your life like that? please ... just tell the truth," she urged.
he looked at her, and her soft eyes and kind expression somehow comforted him in ways he had never felt before. why this girl, who he had never really spent any time with, wanted him to admit his feelings, he didn't know. and even if he didn't want to admit it, he knew he needed a friend like melanie. she possessed oddly similar qualities to bela, and if bela could no longer be there to put him back on track when he had fallen off, perhaps melanie could.
lucas paused for a long time, and then, with a deep breath, he allowed himself to finally speak what had been on his mind for a long time. "bela shouldn't be with sean. she should be with me," he said quietly.
mel only looked at him with sad, knowing eyes. "there we go," she whispered.
lucas shook his head. "it's not as simple as that. we're better off as friends. i came so close to losing her forever, and i'm not going to risk that by telling her how i feel again! so if that means seeing her happy with some other person for the rest of my life, then so be it. we were only meant to be friends. i can't ask for more. i won't," he said firmly.
mel shrugged her shoulders. "well, i thought amybeth and i were just friends too. but i wanted more, and so i asked for more, and the universe, against all odds, gave it to me. and now i'm the happiest i could ever be. sometimes risking it is the best thing you could ever do," melanie said.
"it's just luck that she felt the same way about you. nothing to do with the universe," he muttered, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he feigned interest on his scuffed kitchen tiles.
she chuckled humorlessly. "love isn't about luck. and i guess you're right, it's not about the universe, either. but if you want to spend the rest of your life in misery because you didn't fight for the girl of your dreams, then i really can't stop you."
he glanced up at her. "i did fight for her, and it got me nowhere. being miserable is the only choice i have now, mel. and maybe if i just wait, these feelings will go away," lucas suggested.
"it's been two months since you two became friends again, and you still feel the exact same! i don't think this can disappear. the more you keep lying to yourself, the more you'll end up hurt," mel said, her eyes filled with genuine concern for him.
he simply shrugged. "i don't care if i get hurt. all i care about is her," he said.
"then that's your decision," mel replied. she walked closer to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. "i just hope you won't regret this," she spoke softly.
lucas smiled warmly at her as she dropped her hand, and they shared a moment of companionable silence. "i won't," he responded, knowing somewhere deep in his heart that he was lying.
