Chapter 13:
A month. It had been a month since I had talked to Josh. I tried to, tried to get past Shaun but that didn't work. He wasn't at school much and when he was and he saw me in the hallway he would walk the other way. I tried to get to his house but was afraid what would happen when the door opened. But today was the day I was going to talk to him. I had to because it was killing me inside. I grabbed my phone from the bedside table and dialled Emma's number.
"Emma, I need your help, be at my place at in twenty minutes" Then hung up.
As I waited I was pacing around in my room trying to come up with an idea so that I could talk to Josh. I heard a door knock on the door so I quickly ran down the stairs and flung the door open. Emma was there crouching breathing heavily.
"I got here as soon... as I could" She spoke catching her breath. We both returned to my room. Emma sat on the bed with her hands on the side on the bed still trying to catch her breath. "So what's up? What's the plan?" She asked.
"Okay we need a distraction for Shaun. He keeps watching me, it's weird." I responded, biting my nails still pacing back to forth. "And that's where you come in." I nodded to myself, "You'll be the distraction while I sneak out and go to Josh's house." I stopped pacing and turned to Emma. She was laying down on the bed nodding her head in agreement.
"Do you know what you're going to say to him about the whole thing?" She asked.
Emma was the only one I told about the pregnancy between Avery and Josh. She had come over the night I had told her as I cried myself to sleep. She had a little thing against Josh now for apparently 'breaking' my heart. I however... was heartbroken. I just wanted to talk to Josh get some answers, anything really.
"No I guess I'll just improvise."
"So when are we putting this plan to action?"
I smiled, "Tonight."
.....................
After we had planned out everything we were going to do, we were good to go. Emma and I were in the kitchen waiting for Shaun to get home from work. It seemed fun planning this all out but now I was a little nervous, nervous about seeing Josh. My heart broke into a million pieces when Avery told me about the pregnancy. My thoughts were interrupted when the door opened then shut again. Shaun dropped his bag and walked into the kitchen.
"Hey guys, what's been happening?" He asked opening up the fridge.
"Umm, I was wondering if you could help me with something actually. It's about football... Yeah it's a long story." Emma said nodding her head.
"Yeah sure, what do you want to know?"
"Umm, I think I'm just going to my room, I'll wait for you." I said turning around and started walking back up the stairs.
I ran into my room and locked the room making my way to the window and opened it letting the cool air flow into the room. I sat on the edge on the window and pulled both my legs out of the window. I was currently wearing all black because Emma thought I would be more camouflage. I reached out for the ladder that was against the wall which Emma and I had put earlier before Shaun had gotten home. I slowly steadied myself on the ladder and made my way down one step and a time. I had gotten half way when the ladder had started to shake a little. I shrieked a little and grabbed hold of the ladder really tightly leaning against the wall hoping not to fall backwards. After the shaking had stopped I made my way down again and this time no shaking. I got to the ground and sigh in relief grinning. I turned to my side and started running to the front of the house. I should've brought a flashlight. I was seriously dark because the only lights that were on were the street lights. While I was running my leg got caught so I tripped and fell on the wet ground.
'Nice one Hailey' I told myself.
I got back up even though my leg was aching a little but I continued. I leaned against a wall praying that the motion lights would not come on. I started moving slowly to the bushes next to the gate then ran as fast as I could across the lawn. By the time that was done I was already tired. I walked up to Josh's house and my heart was pumping out of my chest. Mostly from the running, but I was also about to see Josh. It had been a while since we had talked. I guess he needed his time but more than a month was enough. He never called, texted or talked to me. He didn't understand how much I was hurting. I took small steps to the front door hesitantly pressing the doorbell. A few seconds later the door opened and there stood a woman who I assumed was Josh's mum.
"How may I help you dear?" She asked kindly.
"Hi I'm Hailey, I'm a friend of Josh's, and I live next door." I said shyly. I am socially awkward all the time dammit.
"Oh thank goodness." She sighed out of relief. "I have been trying to get him to come out his room for days, weeks now. Please come in." She smiled pulling me into the house. "Dear you must be freezing! You poor thing." I smiled in response nodding a little. "Oh don't worry, I'm not that terrifying."
"I'm sorry, I'm just not used to talking to new people that much." I softly smiled.
"Don't worry about it dear. Josh is in his room. It's upstairs, down the corridor and the last door to the right." She nodded before walking down the hallway. I made my way up the stairs as told and was now standing in front of the Josh's door I presumed. My hand raised and was about to knock but I was officially freaking out. I wanted to turn back. Abort the mission, but I knocked instead. I heard a soft "come in" so I did. I twisted the door knob and walked into the room. The walls were a dark navy blue colour, there were clothes and a few papers all over the floor. And in the corner was a double bed the bed sheets ruffled and there lay Josh. His back was too me but he looked so helpless. My heart was now pounding faster than before. My leg was killing me but I ignored it. I took a few steps forward.
"What is it mum?" Josh groaned not moving an inch.
"Josh?" I asked softly above a whisper. My fingers were connected with each other trying to show that I wasn't shaking. Josh moved a little until he was facing me but still laying down. He eyes were a little wide with shock. He then moved up from his position and stood up. His mouth was slightly gaped. His eyes were swollen, he had messy hair, and his clothes were crinkled. He just looked... damaged. It stayed silent for a few minutes when he cleared his throat, "uh what are you doing here?" He asked.
"I um, I just came to talk to you."
"You shouldn't be here." He scowled. Was he kidding me? I deserved answers, I wouldn't just let him kick me out.
"What are you talking about? You need to. I want an answers, no I need answers. If I need to inform you we were dating about a month ago!... But we weren't we didn't do anything really" I said throwing my hands up in the air but I continued, You look like you haven't slept in days!-"
"Because I haven't slept in days!" He yelled. I looked down to his hands that were shaking. I can't believe myself, I am so stupid. Why would I say that to him? He's hurting and I just piled that onto him. I'm such an idiot. "I haven't slept in days because I can't even think straight. I keep thinking about you all the time it drives me insane. But it doesn't matter anymore. You're not my girlfriend so I don't care about you. Hailey you need to go! I don't need to explain anything to you! Just leave!" He growled.
That hit me, I felt like dying. I held back my tears because I wasn't going to cry in front of him. Pain shot through me through my body to my head. I stumbled back but hit the back of my head with the door behind me. But my heart wasn't the only thing in pain, but my leg was. My black jeans felt too wet, it should have already dried like my jumper did my toes felt damp along with my socks.
"Hailey?" I voice blurred in my ears. I groaned and sunk from the door onto the ground. Josh kneeled in front of me. "What's wrong? Hailey, talk to me." His voice blurred once again. There was too much pain everywhere. I couldn't even balance in a sitting position so I found myself laying on the ground. Josh was hovering over me, he wrapped his arms around my back and pulled me up. I tried to reach for my leg as I groaned. Josh looked from my leg then back to me. He lifted me up bridal style and carried me over to the bed and place me down. I looked down at my leg and saw Josh's hands on the hem on my jeans and lifted it up. I saw a lot of red. "Hailey, um you're going to be okay. You hear me? Make sure you stay awake. Okay? Stay with me." He stood back up and ran out of the room. I stared at my leg and groaned in pain. Why'd I have to trip, such a clutz. Josh ran back into the room and with him was his mum. She had scissors and a bandage with some alcohol medicine. She kneeled next to me and examined the big cut on my leg.
"Hailey, you've lost a fair amount of blood so you're probably feeling a little dizzy. I need to clean it up and bandage it up but you're going to be okay." She assured me. "Josh can you hold her while I clean it up, it's going to sting."
Josh kneeled down beside her and grabbed my hand tightly. The next thing I knew more pain rushed into my body. I screamed as loud as I could to at least make the pain go away but it didn't want to leave. I squeezed Josh's hand harder. The pain was still there but wasn't stinging as much.
"Okay I've cleaned it and bandaged it up. She should be fine she just needs to rest. She can stay here the night."
"Mum is that a good idea?" Josh asked.
"She's injured Josh. She won't be able to walk to a few hours and she's exhausted. Let her rest and when she feels ready she can leave." She said worriedly. Josh pulled his mum away so I couldn't hear, all I could make out was, "What about Aiden?" Josh asked.
"Stay here with her."
I was hurt and exhausted so I drifted immediately to sleep.
.....................
I woke up and moved around a bit. An ache went through my leg as I groaned. I opened my eyes slowly and looked around. It hit me that I was in Josh's room. I slowly pulled my legs over bed and stood up. I saw Josh sleeping in the corner of his room on the floor. He looked so sad. I quietly ran out of the room ignoring the pain in my leg and got to the stairs running down them. When I got to the bottom I ran into a hard chest. I looked up and saw the same guy that I saw in front of my house before which happened to be Josh's brother.
"Careful little one. You should look where you're going." He smirked.
I mumbled a sorry then ran out of the house. I ran across the lawn as the cold air hit my face. I stormed into the house and shut the door behind me.
"WHERE WERE YOU?!" Shaun screamed.
"I had to talk to him. And you can't tell me what to do. I doesn't matter anyway just leave me alone!" I screamed back squeezing my eyes as a small tear rolled down my cheek. I ran up to my room and slammed the door behind me. I leaned against it and fell to the ground. I wasn't holding back my tears anymore. They just kept coming, kept rolling down my cheeks. Memories came back from last night how Josh said those things to me.
I felt so much pain I honestly couldn't bare it. I didn't know exactly where that left us. Why did it have to me to go talk to him in the first place? He was the one that got Avery pregnant. He should have come to me. But he said those things to me so he didn't care. I tried talking to him and restore what had happened even though that should have been him. I tired, I honestly tired.
