Grace POV

"So, you and Ryan are fighting again huh?"

I snap my head at my Mother. "How did you know?"

She takes my hand. "Oh, your very easy to read.... plus, he usually comes over after school and when he doesn't it because you two aren't getting along."

I sigh and sit cross legged even though were not allowed to have our feet on the couch. That's been a rule that my mom had ever since me
and Ryan were kids. Though we always disobeyed, my Mom just decided to let it slide.

"It's him Mom, I swear. He's been acting stupid all day.... I mean stupider than usual."

"Oh Grace, your so dramatic." she says as she gets up and goes into the kitchen. Maybe to check on the apple pie we just put in the oven.

"Okay, whatever you say dearest Mother." I yell to her.

I check my phone to see the date.

Thursday.

It's been five days since the last time I even looked at Ryan. And let me tell you, it's not easy when we sit at the same table at lunch. I just need my space.

"So it just needs to cool off then we can dig in." Mom says as she sits next to me and starts rubbing my head.

"Mom, stop. Your messing up my hair." I take her hand and lay it on her lap.

"Hey, don't take your kiddy drama out on me."

"Mom, I'm not. I just don't want you to mess up my hair. I comb it endlessly for a reason."

"Oh that was you? I thought the cat was shedding again."

"Mom!" I can't believe she just said that. She's being so mean. I don't even shed like that.

What am I saying? I don't shed at all! "I'm already stressed about the whole Ryan thingy, okay."

"Just forgive that poor boy. Invite him over for a slice of pie. It will be the perfect chance for you to say sorry."

"Sorry for what? Mom, didn't see it! The way he punched Nick, the look on his face. It kind of scared me."

"You over exaggerate."

"No. No, I do not."

She starts chuckling. "Remember when we went to the arts and crafts store for the first time?"

"MOM! I was like seven!"

He chuckle turns into loud laughs. "I know, but you look so funny in those pictures."

"Give me a chance and I'll burn all of them pictures." I mumble.

"Just invite him Grace."

"I don't want to see his face."

"He'll eat the pie and leave without a trace."

I stare at her. "What are you doing?"

"Rhyming."

"Well, stop it please."

She sighs and walks upstairs. I'm pretty sure I heard her mumble "Haters going to hate." But whatever.

The smell of Apple pie suddenly captures me. It smells good. And it's going to taste great knowing that me and Mom made it from scratch. Thank you online baking classes. Without you, it'd be another disaster like last time.

I still haven't figured out how cake batter got on the ceiling in the dinning room. We were working in the kitchen the whole time so how?

"You know, I couldn't invite Ryan even if I wanted to." I yelled up the stairs to my Mom.

"Oh, and why is that?" She yelled back.

"Because Ryan is allergic to cinnamon."

"No he's not."

"Mom, you out of all people should remember that." I start climbing the stairs with a smirk on my face. "Remember third grade?"

"Oh my god. Grace that was a horrible accident!"

"What? Giving him a cupcake filled with cinnamon or the way his face started growing all big and red?"

We were quiet for a second. Then we both burst out with laughter. We were laughing so hard we had to hold on to each other for support but when that failed we still fell on the carpeted hallway.

After we were done laughing, we layed there in the hallway, staring at the ceiling. Not thinking, just staring.

"You know," My Mom says, breaking the silence. "I don't know if you remember or not but that's when you and Ryan became great friends."

I get what she's saying.

I do. I definitely remember the day I meet Ryan even though I was in third grade. I may have a short tension span, but no one can ever forget the day the day they meet their best friend....

"I hate Ryan and all them other stupid dumb boys. Yuck!" I said to my friends as we all combed our doll baby hair.

"I know!" My friend Katy had said. "As soon as I get home I have to take a bubble bath."

"Why?" Emily had asked. "Because Ryan poked me."

"Ewww cooties!" All is girls had said as we backed up. "Stay away from us. You have cooties now." Emily had said.

I felt horrible because Katy looked so sad. So I decided to be a good friend and help her out.

"Okay, listen guys," I say standing a little close to Katy but not to close because there was no way I was catching any cooties. "Maybe we can make a cure for cooties." I said.

They all looked back and forth at each other, considering it. They all nodded and said "Okay."

"So what's the cure?" Katy asked. I thought about it for a minute....

"Maybe it can be to get revenge." I suggest.

"Awesome!.... How do you get revenge?" Katy asked.

"Don't worry." I say. I turned and looked over at the boys and spot Ryan putting a puzzle piece in the wrong spot. "It'll be easy. Boys are stupid."
And all us girls high fived each other and discussed or evil plan.

The next day I asked Mom for a cinnamon honey bun to pack in my lunch.

"Gracy, you never even finish the honey buns." She said as she made my PB&J.

"It's not for me, it's for a friend." I take a bite of Lucky Charms.

"Grace, I make the lunches for you. Not for you to feed your friends."

"I'm not. It's just...... I want to say sorry for something."

"Oh. Well that's very nice of you. But I kinda ate the rest of the honey buns last night."

I groan. "Mommy! No!"

"I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you. How about I go out and buy a muffin and deliver it to this friend. Deal?" She says handing me my lunch bag.

"Deal." I say accepting it and heading to the door to go to the bus stop. "It had to be cinnamon though!"

"Okay."

You can probably guess what happened next.

Mom kept her promise and delivered the muffin, Ryan ate it, his face turned into a giant tomato....

Etc. etc.

Mom rushed him to the hospital, bringing me along. I was actually quite terrified. I didn't know that could happen to someone's face.

Me and Mom waited for a long, long, long, long, time. Then Ryan's parents came and we all waited together for a longer time.

Then the doctor came out and said he was okay but they were going to keep him over night and that we could visit him. Ryan's Mommy and Daddy ran to see him.

After they came out Mom started to go in. "Coming kiddo?"

I shook my head. I didn't want to see a big meany tomato. Nope.

Mom shrugged. "Okay, just wait for me."

She left and I sat there like a good girl, swinging my legs back and forth. After a few minutes she came out.

"He wants to see you." she said.

"No."

"Please Gracy, he really wants to."

I sighed. "Okay."

"Want me to come with you?" She asked.

"No." I was mad because she's making me see Ryan. I walked down the hall to the room I seen her come out of. I entered and closed the door.

I turned to look at Ryan and his face looked better. Now I didn't have to talk to the tomato, just the meany.

"Hi." he said.

"Hi." I responded.

"I'm sorry I ate your muffin."

"I'm sorry your face looked like a tomato because you did."

He was quiet for a second. "It's okay."

"Why did your face do that?"

"Because I can't eat cinnamon."

"Ohhhh. That's why you hate it."

"Yeah."

"Sorry."

"It's okay."

"I hope you get better." I say opening the door.

"Thanks stupid dacy."

For some reason I smiled and said, "Your welcome meany tomato."

And I closed the door and skipped back to Mommy.

"Yeah Mom, I do. I'll go invite him right now."
