Author's Mature Content Note:  "N&S: John Thornton, Love Lessons" is a story with mature themes of love and relationships set within a period drama of the 1850's.  As such there will be heartfelt moments of love and sensuality (S)--as well as other dramatic emotions (D), including some violence (V)--and I will rate those chapters accordingly.  If you are unable or unwilling to attend a movie with the ratings that I provide, then please do not read that chapter.  This is my disclaimer.

Author's Recap from the previous chapter:  Friday, November 21, 1851, Lord Baird and the heavily pregnant Lady Fiona Ogilvy arrive--via train from London--at Angus, Scotland to visit their parents--Lord Airlie, Dr. Cameron Ogilvy and his soon to give birth wife Lady Airlie, Hannah Thornton Ogilvy.  Lady Fiona has obtained many of the latest pregnancy comfort devices--such as water tubs and water mattresses--and brought them with them for their stay for the Christmans holidays.  With Lady Fiona's due date being January 1852, she has over a month to wait to givebirth.  However Lady Fiona is so roundly pregnant that her little five year old cousin, Lady Blythe Ogilvy was almost to the point of offering Lady Fiona her lamb birthing services.  As it was, Lady Fiona tried to coax her mother, Lady Airlie, into trying out one of the water tubs to no avail.  This Christmas season will be the first for the newly married Ogilvy couples--and bring a few surprises with them.

"N&S: John Thornton, Love Lessons", Ch. 70 (PG-13): Advent Surprises, Part 1

The week after Baird and Fiona arrived at the Airlie Estate near Angus, Scotland on Friday, November 21, 1851 is filled with relaxing past times--especially for the two pregnant ladies.  They do not venture out of their homes--Airlie Castle [(2) right]  for Hannah, Lady Airlie and Airlie Cottage for Lady Fiona--due to the cold weather and sometimes slippery snowy conditions.  The brisk wintery winds blow and howl throughout the trees at night. But for the large castle having twenty five fireplaces, they and the castle staff might all freeze. Happily, Hannah has also seen fit to have copious rugs and tapestry retrieved from the attics--and thoroughly beaten clean--to be hung on the walls and strewn about the floors, respectively.

And Lady Fiona at Airlie Cottage  [(3) left], takes full advantage of all of the pregnancy pampering equipment that she and her husband Lord Baird brought with them.  Their large and spacious 10 bed chamber cottage now even boasts running water--a necessity for the aquatic nature of many of Lady Fiona's contrrraptions, as her husband Lord Baird bemusedly refers to them.  The water mattress is, of course, a boon to their lovemaking--with Lady Fiona on top giving her control of their rhythm since she is now fully eight months pregnant and more delicate, in reality, when before her marriage Lady Fiona was merely slightly hypochondriacal about her many fusses about her health.

But the the water tub is Lady Fiona's favorite place to float away her back pain and swollen ankles woes in the afternoons--when she seems to feel at her most swollen.  Her husband finds that he is hard pressed to get her out of her six foot by four foot oblong metal tub that she had specifically made to her specifications--right down to the lovely vine and flower scroll work along the top rim edge of the tub.  Only the enticement of visiting Airlie Village shoppes twice this past week--with all manner of handmade frippery and finery that ladies so appreciate--has Lady Fiona upright and walking short distances with her husband as he assists her in her many purchases of ribbons, linens, under clothes, and of course, copious amounts of baby clothes.  Lord Baird and Lady Fiona make for quite a happy couple as they greet everyone--who blesses them and their coming baby.

However Lady Fiona's mother, Hannah Lady Airlie, is not so sanguine.  As Hannah's December 1st due date approaches, Cameron can tell that Hannah is beginning to feel more anxious about giving birth as a now fifty year old woman.  Truth be told, Cameron is concerned that the strain of child birth might cause her--or him--to have a stroke.  And with John and Margaret set to arrive from Milton by train on Friday, November 28th to spend the Christmas holiays in Scotland, events do not go as planned.  So as every good husband does when his wife is in a delicate condition, Cameron Lord Airlie, is ever solicitous, ever attentive, and ever loving of his beloved wife Hannah Lady Airlie.

Hannah slept quite blissfully this Thursday night just past before John and Margaret's expected arrival on Friday afternoon--due in no small part to her husband's loving attentions.  At first, Hannah blushingly thought their lovemaking might be considered shocking--especially since she is due to give birth in three days time.  But after her husband's second romantic tryst in eight hours with her--this time, this morning--Hannah feels quite content and happy as her husband tenderly  embraces her afterward [(4) right].

Cameron: "Well, me Dearrr. Ye look so rrradiant that the morning sun's brilliant rrrays arrre muted by comparrrison." Cameron lovingly smiles at Hannah.

Hannah:   "If I am glowing, then you are the culprit."  Hannah states primly, but with a small smile curling at the corners of her mouth.

Cameron: "Did ye wish to take brrreakfast in bed today, My Love?"  He asks caringly. "I will join ye." Cameron adds huskily with a wickedly raised eyebrow as he caresses her full round right breast. Her beautiful womanly curves have become even more so as her pregnancy progressed--to his endless admiration. And Cameron's prescription for boosting his wife's spirits--and possibly facilitating an easier childbirth--is much lovemaking.

Hannah: "Cameron!  You are incorrigible!"  Hannah playfully swats at her husbands hand, but does not push him away from caressing her. For the first time in her life, Hannah is a much loved woman--the center of her adoring husband's attentions.  And she glows with happiness.  "Breakfast in bed will be lovely!"

Cameron: "I will be right back after requesting it."  He kisses her tenderly and rubs noses with her, then he kisses her again.

Reluctantly, Cameron rises from their bed to call their servants.  He is like a naked Zeus--all toned muscle and broad shoulders.  And Cameron's sixty year old muscular frame on nude display [(5) right]  is pleasingly appreciated by his wife Hannah before he dons his robe. Cameron strides to the wall and pulls a chord to ring for a servant.  He adds more logs to the fire to warm the room as he waits for a response.  A few minutes later, there is a discreet knock upon their bed chamber door and Cameron opens it. A footman in full livery waits upon his Lord with respect and deference--wearing pants rather than a kilt as a concession to it being Winter time.  Cameron orders a full Scottish breakfast [(6)] two breakfasts with eggs and sausages, pastries, juice, and much tea, before returning to bed.  He is a big muscular man with hearty appetites--obviously.

Sometime later after breakfasting, their attendants help Lord and Lady Airlie dress for the day in their separate dressing rooms. Hannah wears a loose fitting day dress in emerald green velvet that she had made for these final chilly days of her pregnancy.  Hannah now eschews the former dark colors she favored before marrying Cameron and embraces brighter and cheerful colors.  Cameron dons a casual cashmere[(7)]  sweater of heather grey soft wool harvested and knitted from the Airlie Castle Estates large flock of sheep. Wool yarn and the knitted or crocheted products from them--sweaters, blankets, caps, scarves, and gloves--are yet another side venture for the Ogilvy-Thornton Scottish Mills that provides the people of Airlie Villlage and surrounding area much needed work and is an economic boon to the community.

Then Hannah and Cameron spend a quiet morning together in their bed chamber suite's sitting area--Hannah beautifully embroidering baby clothes with the Airlie "A" on them, whilst Cameron reviews some estate matters of leases and rents at a desk nearby that he had moved into their bed chamber to allow him to spend more time with his wife in the last days of her pregnancy. And Cameron regularly rises from his work desk and crosses the few feet to Hannah to see to his wife's comfort and he kisses her lovingly.  Hannah is feeling a little more discomfort with her pregnancy this morning after breakfasting.  And as a physician and as her husband, Cameron is ever watchful over her.  Then after lunch, he sends a message to his son Baird that he will not be accompanying him to the train station this afternoon to fetch John and Margaret and baby Audrey Grace because Cameron does not want to leave Hannah for an instant. Cameron's change in plans will prove most providential

***

Though Lord Baird Ogilvy had intended to retrieve John and Margaret Thornton and their baby Audrey Grace by himself after receiving his father's regrets, his wife Lady Fiona has other ideas.  She wants to go to the train station, too.  Lady Fiona's reasons are partially to see her brother and sister-in-law quicker, but also to greet their people.  For as the heir presumptive's wife, Lady Fiona is admired and fawned over--especially now that she is with child.   Fiona is quite gleeful about having the Airlie village's little ones want to lay their clean hands on her dress over her pregnant tummy.  Afterall, to Lady Fiona, children are so dear.  Baird takes his wife's popular adulation in stride--pleased that she has been so well received by their Scottish community.

Baird: With gentle urgency, Baird whispers in his wife's ear as they wait for the train to come to a full stop at the Angus, Scotland train station.  "Fiona, My Love.  Ye should sit and rrrest while we wait forrr John and Marrrgarrret and the baby to disembarrrk.  Therrre arrre many passengerrrs today and it may take them some time to collect their trrrunks."

He states logically.  But then logic and reasoning tend to bend to Fiona's whims.

Fiona: "Oh fie, Baird!"  Fiona agitatedly paces the train station platform, her navy velvet skirts swish around her in a territorial manner.  "If I have to sit still for one more minute, I will burst!"  At present, sitting is not as comfortable an attitude as walking or even lying down is for her at this late stage in her pregnancy with only one month to go until she gives birth.

Baird spots John and Margaret alighting from their private compartment and he waves at them--and they wave back as they make their way to Baird and Fiona.  Fiona also waves her lace edged fine linen handkerchief at her brother and sister-in law.  Their greetings are full of hugs and kisses.

John: "Fanny!"  Fiona pouts.  "Sorry, I mean Fiona, you look beautiful!"  He gives her a gentle hug.

Fiona:  "Do I really, Johnny?"  He nods his assurance, though John marvels at his sister seeming to have outgrown even the size that his wife Margaret had achieved before she gave birth to their daughter last Summer.

Margaret: "Truly, Fanny!  You glow with your impending motherhood."

Baird: "See, Fiona?  I told you, you werrre beautiful."  Baird admonishes in mock seriousness before smiling and leaning down to kiss his pregnant wife on her cheek--since they are in public. Then Baird turns back again to John and Margaret and thei baby.  "And look at yourrr bairrrn!  Audrrrey Grrrace has grrrown so!"  He holds out his hand to the baby and she playfully swats at it.

Audrey Grace: "Eee yah  ha!"

Margaret: "That means she likes her Uncle Baird and her Aunt Fiona."  Margaret explains gleefully.  Baird and Fiona smile lovingly at their baby niece.

After John and Baird secure the Thorntons' trunks on a luggage cart, they and a train station porter all walk back to the entrance where their large carriage is waiting.

Fiona: "Was your journey tolerable, Margaret?"  Fiona asks soliticiously of the two hour trip.

Margaret: "Well, it was an experience traveling by train for the first time with the baby."  Margaret rolls her eyes.

John: "Yes.  But if I had not foreseen our need for certain necessities, we might have been in a very bad way."  John blanches.

Baird: "Oh?  What necessities?" Baird asks cluelessly.

John: "Well ... cleaning up after her messes."  John lifts up a sealed oil skin bag--with the water proofing easy clean surface on the bag's interior--containing several soiled baby wrappers in them.  And after removing the soiled wrappers for their cleaning, the bag's interior will clean up easily.

Baird: "I would neverrr have guessed.  The baby seems so sweet smelling--as do you, I might add."  Baird jests about John holding the bag--literally.  John shrug's his shoulders good naturedly.

Margaret and Fiona: Tittering with laughter. "Ha ha ha ha ha!"

Fiona: "Oh Johnny, that is a marvelous innovation!   Baird, we will have to get one of those.  Where did you purchase it, Johnny?"

John:  "Actually, it was Baird's sister Angharad's husband Alistair MacIntosh who gifted us with the bag.  This baby bag idea was something he came up with recently for their baby Amanda when they travel."

Baird:  "Well!  I darrre say that me brrrother-in-law Alistair can stand to give us a baby bag as well. This could catch on."  Baird's mind wanders away a bit thinking about the entrepreneurial possibilities.

But the two young couples cannot tarry for long as they load their carriage, because their cousin Lord Jamie Ogilvy hurriedly dashes up to them on horseback.

Jamie: "Bairrrd!   Bairrrd!"   He waves and calls out to them breathlessly. As his horse lurches to a halt in front of their carriage at the train station and he pants for his exertions.  Sliding off his horse and striding toward his cousin Lord Baird, Lord Jamie Ogilvy looks like a wild man with is now longish hair [(8) right] that he lets grow for warmth during the Winter months.

Baird: "Jamie!   What is wrrrong?"

Jamie:  "It is ...  the ..."  Jamie pants, trying to catch his breath.

John: "Calm down, man.  What is it?"

Margaret and Fiona exchange worried knowing looks.

Jamie: "The bairrrn!   It comes!  Thistle sent me to fetch ye to come strrraight away to Airlie Castle."

Margaret:   "John!   Mama must be having her baby."

Everyone's eyes go wide as Lord Jamie vigorously nods his head up and down as his breathing is still shallow.

Jamie: "I alrrready fetched the midwife.  Ye must come!"

Baird:  "Of courrrse!"

Everyone piles into Baird's and Fiona's carriage--even the very large six foot six inch tall Jamie whose horse had been so pushed to its limits in galloping to the Angus train station that it could not be ridden back to Airlie Castle without resting first at the town stables.  It is a tense twenty minute ride to Airlie Castle as everyone recalls the difficult time giving birth to Audrey Grace that Margaret had had last Summer. And they worry for the fifty year old Hannah's health and well being.

But upon entering the large entry hall of Airlie Castle Baird and Fiona, John and Margaret and their baby, and Jamie are greeted by a beautiful sound--a baby's wailing birthing cry.

Baby:  "Waaa  waaaa   waaaa!"

In just over an hour, Hannah Thornton Ogilvy has given birth to her and her husband Cameron's child promptly at 2:15pm on Friday, November 28th, 1851.  The young adults--John and Margaret, Baird and Fanny, and Jamie--look at each other shocked for the sudden birth of Cameron's and Hannah's baby a few days ahead of its expected arrival of December 1st.

Fiona: "I must go to Mama!"  Fiona implores of her husband Baird.

Baird: "Aye!   I am eagerrr to learrrn if I am to have a new baby brother or sister."  As he assists his wife slowly and carefully up the grand central staircase.  Her own pregnancy fullness impedes her progress because she must be extra careful not to fall.

John exchanges a knowing looking of trepidation with Lord Jamie--they both know all too well the dangers of childbirth--for the mother and for the child.  And there are no castle servants rushing to greet them and tend to their needs. They must all be waiting to hear of the birth.

John: "Come, Margaret. Let us congratulate Mother and Cameron."  John guides his wife up the grand central staircase with steely resolve.  He will either find joy at the top of the stairs--or something else.  Lord  Jamie follows behind them.

Butler:  The castle butler meets them at the top of the stairs.   "Welcome My Lord Baird and Lady Fiona, and Mr. and Mrs. Thornton. My apologies for not greeting you downstairs properly just now.

John: "Is all well? Is my mother ...?"  John's voice catches in his throat.

Cameron slips into the hallway as the midwife and their servants help finishing tidying Hannah up and making her feel fresh with new bed linens and a new nightgown after a sponge bath--and he smiles warmly at John and at his son Baird.  Cameron's grey sweater sleeves are rolled up and there are a few splotches of blood on the front of himself where he had tied around himself a ripped pillow case--much to Hannah's dismay--to prevent any stray wool hairs from falling into the birthing area where the baby might come in contact with it.  Sensing John's nervousness--and the reason for it, Cameron tries to put John at his ease as he removes his apron like covering with a triumphant smile of joy upon his face [(9) right].

Cameron: "John."  He says softly. "Hannah and the baby are well." Cameron smiles relievedly.

Everyone sighs their relief:   "Hhhhh!"

Cameron: "Baird and John, would you like to come in and see your mother and greet your new baby brother?"  Cameron smiles pridefully--a second son.

Jamie: "Ach!  Congratulations."  Jamie lunges forward and embraces his cousin Cameron in a big bear hug--lifting him up off the ground.  "A second son! Such a blessing!"

Fiona blanches a bit--because she wants a daughter when their baby is born. Baird smiles at her knowingly  and he caringly kisses her temple.

Margaret: "That's wonderful!"   Then Margaret turns to her baby in her arms, and in a sing songy voices says. "Audrey Grace, you have an uncle!"

Baird and John each realize that not only do they each now have a baby brother--with the baby being the spare for Baird--but now Baird and John are truly brothers bonded by blood with their shared brother.

Fiona has a more subdued expression her face as they are all ushered into see the new baby--with Lady Thistle, Lady Blythe, and Viscount Hamish already inside.  And there Hannah rests upon her pillows with fresh linens and a fresh nightgown as she holds her swaddled baby boy in her arms.  Hannah is the picture of motherly love and devotion.  Then she looks up at everyone and smiles tiredly but happily [(10) right].

Cameron: "Hannah was in labor for just over an hour after her water broke.  The baby came swiftly and efficiently--with little trouble." He smiles smugly in feeling that his prescription of much lovemaking for he and his wife Hannah these past few days has helped in this regard.  Well, it certainly didn't hurt.

Hannah: "Speak for yourself, Cameron."  She says softly admonishing with a smile while gently rocking their  baby son in her arms and looking at her husband a trifle bemusedly annoyed at his seeming blasé remark about her giving birth.

Fiona:  "Was it so very bad, Mama?" Fiona asks hesitantly as she bites her lower lip.  For she will be giving birth next--in January 1852.  And though she feels that she has prepared herself well for her coming birthing trials, Fiona is still a little anxious--as anyone would be.

Hannah: "No Fiona Dear, being in labor one hour is not so very long to deliver a baby." Hannah is not trying to appear smug because her daughter-in-law Margaret had such a difficult birthing experience.   And she refrains from citing other birthing horror stories to spare her daughter the worry

Thistle:  "Once ourrr babies arrre in ourrr arrrms, it is all worth it."   Lady Thistle smiles encouragingly at Fiona as her daughter little Lady Blythe leans back into her Mama's embrace. Then Lady Thistle and Lord Jamie share a knowing sad look for their earlier loss.  Jamie is standing with his arms about his well formed nine year old son Viscount Hamish's shoulders.

Little five year old Lady Blythe pouts a bit because her lamb birthing services were not required by her Nana Hannah.  Well, there is always her cousin Fiona's birth to look forward to.  And Lady Blythe unconsciously wriggles her little fingers at her side in anticipation.  She would like to be a doctor one day.  She just hasn't decided if she prefers animals or people yet.

But Fiona has hope that her own birthing experience will be easy--or at least not as bad as her sister-in-law Margaret's was.

John has been watching mesmerized [(11) right]  as his new little brother is gently rocked in his mother's arms.  As John lovingly gazes at his wife Margaret--a more besotted man than he cannot be found--he can only imagine how he will feel when Margaret presents him with their son in a few years time, or if they adopt a baby boy to be their son due to the danger that Margaret's first birthing experience placed her in.

John: "Does he have a name yet, Mother and Cameron?"

Cameron:  "Aye!  It is ..." Cameron smiles.   Then he leans down and whispers into his wife's ear.   She nods her head--as if a final decision on the baby's name has only now been decided. Cameron stands upright again.  "Ourrr son is Lorrrd Gavin Victorrr Ogilvy.  And ye John and Marrrgarrret and ye Bairrrd and Fiona arrre to be his godparrrents."

Margaret: "Oh!   We will be honored to be his godparents."

Baird: "As will we!"  Baird smiles and squeezes his wife Fiona's shoulders as he embraces her.

Everyone looks at the new parents and then to the new Ogilvy baby [(12) right].     Little Lord Gavin is a well formed baby, pink, healthy--and he is in very good spirits for not even being one hour old.

After walking up the stairs and standing for several minutes in the room, the very pregnant Fiona is clearly tired with her exertions this day and the day's commotions as she nestles into her husband's side as they stand around Hannah in bed.  Then as everyone is focusing upon seeing the new baby Gavin--and taking turns holding it--Fiona flinches in pain.

Fiona: "Ahh!"  Fiona gasps uncontrollably.  All eyes swiftly turn to Fiona.

Baird: "Arrre ye Alrrright?" Baird asks solicitously of his nearly eight months pregnant wife.

Fiona:  "I feel  ... odd. And I had a sharp pain just now.   Fiona winces apologetically [(13) right]  for not intentionally trying to take the spotlight away from her mother and the new baby. Then Fiona gasps again in pain, not two minutes after the last pain.  "Hhhhh!"

Cameron exchanges a knowing look between he and his wife Hannah.  Then Cameron strides over to Fiona--intending to have her sit down while he checks her pulse to ascertain her condition.  But Fiona beats him to it as a torrent of water gushes between her legs onto the rug at her dainty feet.

Fiona:  "Oh no!"  Fiona looks down at the growing puddle on the floor around her.  Then she looks up at everyone in utter astonishment--whose faces look at her with their own astonishment.

Cameron: "Herrre we go again."  Cameron smiles wryly.  Baird has a growing smile upon his face in anticipation.

And the next Ogilvy baby is about to be born--a five weeks ahead of schedule.
