Fic title: The Mystic and The Peacemaker.
Y/N's POV
When I was first admitted to Hope's Peak, I was ecstatic. My twin brother, Mokoto Naegi (the SHSL Lucky Student), got in so I knew I was bound to, but that didn't mean I couldn't still be screaming with joy.
That's when that stupid bear ruined everything.
"Upupupupupu! Kill each other!" I mocked in his pubescent tone. I was hastily walking down the halls towards the evening after returning to my room with a box of donuts. I continued monologuing to myself in the annoying tone, "Enrolling the SHSL Peacemaker was a great idea!"
I huffed my myself, before hearing a familiar posh tone.
"Hush, peasant!"
I turned around to see none other that Togami, the SHSL Asshole, in all of his sardonically insulting 'glory'.
"If you'd been so kind as to stop loitering about, I'd like to take this time to mention that I saw a corpse strewn up in the girls' locker room."
My heart thudded to a stop. I shook my initial thought from my - Hagakure would be fine. There's no way that he could be dead.
As if on cue, a tall tanned figure slipped out of his respective dorm room - the one with the sign that read 'Hagakure'.
"Con Artist Peasant," Togami said, snapping his fingers at Hiro as if he were a dog. "Come with Y/N and I so that we can investigate a corpse."
"C-Corpse?!"
His hair seemed to puff up even more as his brown eyes widened with fear, so I gave him a sympathetic glance, though I too was mentally shaken. "We need to remain calm, Hagakure. Come on," I said, playing into my socially calm role a bit too well, almost coming off as dead-pan. "We'll investigate together."
Putting on a brave face (literally), Hiro smiled in his usual goofy way. "Thank you, Y/N-chi."
"You two, get a room," Demanded Naegi, who was eavesdropping from the doorway, "We need to investigate this murder."
Blushing, I smiled at my brother. "A wise deduction as usual, brother."
When it came to peacekeeping, you had to lie a lot. You feed people what they want to hear as to avoid arguments, dodging the truth with well-thought-out compliments. I did this to a lot of people, putting on a kind facade to avoid causing damage. But when I spoke to Hiro, I didn't just speak with sincerity.
I felt it.
Cautiously, the four of us shuffled towards the girls' locker room (aside from Togami, who was confidently striding away). The dim lighting was trying to manipulate us into being afraid.
I wasn't afraid. I stopped being afraid of things a long time ago. Peacekeepers can't be afraid - they're the people who victims turn to for advice. I can't... be...-
Just as I felt my opinion-less mask slip off, I found Hagakure smiling at me.
"Don't worry. I'll protect you."
Those five words caused me to stop walking. No. I couldn't become dependent. I would protect him.
"I'll be fine." I replied, coldly.
Out of nowhere Hiro pulled out his crystal ball. I recalled him saying that it cost one million yen.
"The victim is Chihiro." He said decisively after rubbing it for a while. He was breaking into a nervous sweat.
The SHSL Affluent Prodigy - sorry, I meant the SHSL Asshole - smirked with a trace of amusement on his face.
"That, Hagakure," he said, creaking open the door to reveal a crucified Chihiro Fujisaki. "Is correct."
When I saw her, dead as a doorknob and tied up like a puppet, I screamed. I screamed until my throat went dry. I screamed until Togami demanded that I stopped.
"Peacekeeping Peasant, stop screaming. You're failing your Ultimate right now."
I swallowed back another scream. I couldn't do it. I couldn't do it. I was breaking down. In public.
I had a lot of breakdowns, but this had to be the worst one. Like a tsunami of bottled-up emotions that would come flooding down at any given moment.
The body announcement played, because of course it did, but I barely heard it.
I just stared at the dull, empty eyes that once held a lifetime full of laughter. I watched as the neon pink blood traced the programmers face ever so gently, like death couldn't even bare to hurt such an innocent victim. Her mouth remained hinged open, almost a smile, almost a sob. Chihiro was dead. She was dead because I failed.
Failure.
I was a failure.
Hagakure's POV
I glanced at Y/N. I'd never seen her so screwed up.
I quickly rubbed my crystal ball in hope that it could help my find out why she was like this. Thirty-three percent accuracy was better than zero percent.
I slowly started figuring it out.
During Maizano's investigation she was pale and shaking, but she kept stumbling around from person to person to see if they needed help or (more specifically) emotional support.
When Leon died, she swallowed thickly. Did she throw up in her mouth? She insisted on joining Aoi and Sakura's training session despite the trauma of Leon's execution.
But, despite the trauma of everything that had happened, she kept on taking other students' emotional burdens.
I put all of my facts together.
She felt like a failure. She took on more work for herself to numb herself from her own pain.
"Togami, mind if I sit this one out?" I asked sheepishly. I had to help Y/N, but to do that I had to get myself out of a situation that would stress me out. Two stressed people can't have a good conversation; my horoscope said so.
The Affluent Prodigy huffed and crossed his arms. "At least you won't get in the way then. Off you pop, then, go and make-out with Y/N or whatever it is that you ruffians do."
Ignoring his ignorant comment, I took the still stunned Y/N-chi away from the situation.
She looked numb - her mind was clearly on autopilot.
I don't know why I didn't just take her to the dining hall of somewhere, but I just lead her to my dorm.
"Y/N-chi, what's wrong?"
"Oh my God..." She muttered, trembling like a leaf and her eyes brimming with tears. "I... I couldn't... protect..."
"Y/N, please snap out of it." I begged, nervously. "Come on, Y/N-chi, you're not a failure. You can't save everyone. You didn't know what was going to happen."
At first I predicted that she was going to scream at me.
She hugged me instead and cried.
"I couldn't protect anyone! It's only a matter of time before you..."
"Y/N-chi, I'm not going anywhere." I promised, trying to look more determined than I felt. She broke the hug and stared at me.
She paused.
"Do you... want a drink?"
She nodded slowly, standing up. I told her that I'd get it and headed towards the kitchen to get a glass for her.
When I came back, she was staring at the door.
I placed the water in her hand and she simpered at me gratefully. She was coming back, at least temporarily.
She finished the glass in a few seconds. "Hiro, why do you do this to me?" She asked after a long, comfortable silence.
"Huh? Do what?"
"Make me..." she paused, tracing her index finger around the lip of the glass. "...feel things. I-I shouldn't be allowed to feel things. If everyone else is happy, I can be happy too. Until then, I don't need it. I don't deserve it."
I don't know why I did what I did next.
I kissed her.
Internally panicking, she teared up.
"Oh my God, oh my God, I am so sorry, I shouldn't have—"
Then I noticed that she was smiling.
"There it is. Happiness." She smiled widely.
"Y/N," I grinned after seeing her at least temporarily happy again. I'd just thought of the cheesiest line to tell her. "You may not think you've kept everybody happy, but know this - you've made me happy."
