I dress the sky in grey,
dove chiffon clouds
to cloak her, rain clouds a
fascinator to enchant
the birds that scatter
like freckles on her face -
I paint the sky grey
give her lips dark as coal,
see her blush blue in the day;
I paint away all the blemishes
of cirrus scars and unroll
the cumulus in curls on her head,
make her pretty as a doll.
I adorn her with smokey ribbons,
drizzle her with the perfumes
of late summer afternoons:
ripe fruit slices their
heavenly aroma entices -
see her dewy as early spring mornings
under the gently blooming, new year sun.
And the rain washes it all away.
All the toils of day,
rain rests her in the purples and oranges
of the dusk sun,
lays her to sleep in the
deep blue, knows only
to smother and soothe
in night's heavy sea.
