Chapter 2
The descision
I look up to see the huge building before me. It actually looks really nice. Nothing gloomy or weird. The other students are the same as in every school, little groups with their social standards everywhere. I make my way to the front office to get my schedule. (A/N: I have no clue how the Australian school system works, so there are gonna be faults) When I enter the lady behind the desk looks up at me and smiles.
“Hello, I’m Faith Kelly?” I say, although it comes out more like a question. “Oh yes, you are new here, aren’t you?” the lady says. “Yes, I am” I say with a smile. “I have your schedule here, you will also have a buddy for the week. She will show you around and you can come to her if you have any questions,” She says, “She will be here any minute.”
I thank her and sit down to wait for my buddy. About a minute later a girl with shoulder length light pink hair enters the office. She talks to the lady behind the desk for a minute and then turns to me. “Are you Faith?” she asks. “Yep, that would be me,” I say and laugh awkwardly. “I’m Ruby, I will be your buddy for the week,” the girl says, “have you got your schedule yet?” I fumble around in my bag and pull out the, already pretty crumbled, paper. I hand it to Ruby and she quickly scans over it. “Oh cool! We have a lot of classes together. See, English, math, history and art. Oh and P.E. but that is a real struggle for me,” she chuckles. I laugh along with her, she has a really light laugh, which fits her light hair I guess. “I know,” I say, “the struggle is real.”
I follow her into the actual school building, she leads me through a maze of hallways and finally we arrive at what will be my locker for the year. “My locker is next to yours actually,” she says, “and my friend’s locker is a bit down the hall. I think you’ll like her.” She talks very quickly, but I like her, she doesn’t seem stuck up or fake. After I get my books for our first class, which happens to be boring history, we walk down the hall to meet up with her friend. Pretty soon I see a girl with icy blue hair and Ruby points at her. “That’s Melody, she is my friend. Are you okay with it if she will kind of be your buddy this week as well?” Ruby asks. “Sure,” I laugh. We stop next to Melody’s locker. Without looking at us Melody starts to talk. “Ughh Rubs (A/N: I pronounce this something like Roobs idk you will probably get it ;P) this day hasn’t even started yet and it’s already horrible. I didn’t finish my French assignment because Damian was over last night and now stupid mister la Roux will make a huge argument over it. I can just feel it.” My curious mind immediately wanted to know who Damian was. Probably her boyfriend, but who knows maybe it’s her cousin. “Uhm Mel? I have our new friend here. Maybe you should introduce yourself?” Ruby says and then starts laughing. Melody looks up from her locker in shock and I give her a smile and a little wave. “Hi,” I say. “Oh my god sorry, hi I’m Melody,” Melody say, smiling at me. “My name is Faith,” I say, I look down at my shoes for a moment, but then I look back up at her. “Oh my god your accent I love it,” she pretty much screeches. I blush in embarrassment and thank her.
History luckily flies by, because Ruby turns out to be a really awesome person. We laugh and talk the entire hour, much to the annoyance of our teacher. Damian turns out to be Melody’s boyfriend, as I predicted. After history it is time for art, my favorite subject. We go over to the classroom and sit down after I introduce myself to the teacher. Class starts and everyone starts working on their assignment and after Ruby quickly explains to me what the assignment is, I start working on it as well. It is a really broad interpretation, we have to pick something that gives us a lot of emotions and make an art piece with those emotions. Obviously the first thing I think about is the move I just made. I scribble and wait for a wave of inspiration to hit me.
Halfway through I suddenly realize that lunch is after this class. I nudge Ruby, careful not to make her slip on her drawing. She turns her head to me and raises an eyebrow as a question. “I was just wondering if I could sit with you and Mel at lunch?” I ask her. Instead of a response, Ruby starts laughing her head off. I feel kind of offended, it isn’t a weird question, is it? I just look at her with my eyebrows raised, as to say what the fuck are you doing? She doesn’t stop laughing, instead the tears start streaming down her face. The teacher and a couple of students are actually looking at her. I look at her for another ten seconds and then I can’t hold it back anymore. I double over in laughter and soon enough I feel tears on my cheeks. My stomach hurts and everyone is looking at us now. We don’t care though, we are just enjoying our weird, uncalled for moment of utter hilarity.
When we finally stop laughing, she looks at me and says “of course you can sit with us silly, that shouldn’t even be a question.” She smiles again and then continues to work on her assignment. I turn my head to look out the window and sigh contently. This school might actually be better than my last.
We walk to the cafeteria and Ruby points to a table slightly to the left of the middle as we enter. Melody is already sitting there, standing out with her blue hair. She smiles as we near the table, looking up at us. “Hey guys,” she says when we take a seat, “how were your first classes in the land down under, Faith?” She laughs at the nickname for Australia. “It was fine really,” I tell her, laughing. “We actually were hilarious at art.” I look at Ruby and we both burst out laughing again. Pretty soon Melody joins us and we are all hiccupping like three demented donkeys. When we’re done laughing Melody asks why we even were so hilarious. “Oh Faith asked me if she could sit with us at lunch, so I couldn’t hold back my laughter for some reason.” Melody chuckles and shakes her head. “You’re so weird Ruby. Good weird, but weird.”
“So girls,” I say with a smirk, “do you mind telling me the latest gossip? You know, just so I will be up to date and won’t make any weird remarks.” Ruby tears of a piece of her bread and chews thoughtfully. “Hmmm.. the most interesting piece of gossip..” Melody looks at Ruby with eyes full of disbelief. “Ruby! That is the easiest question ever. You know.. the fight?” Ruby’s eyes light up and her smile widens. “ooooh, the fight. Of course!” I look at them confused, why would a fight be so interesting? Fights happen all the time right? “Eh, a fight?” I ask.
Ruby turns to me and gives me some kind of eyebrow wiggle. Melody chuckles at that and elbows Ruby to get her talking. “Okay, okay!” Ruby says, while rubbing her arm. “You didn’t have to do that you know.” She scowls at Melody a bit, but her face quickly turns into a huge smile again. “Okay there is this boy at our school,” she starts off as if she was about to tell a horror story, “his name is Calum and he is.. well he is a troublemaker.” I start to look around to see if I can find this infamous boy. Melody laughs at my attempt to find him and snaps her fingers to get my attention. I quickly turn my head to her again as she takes over the story from Ruby.
“You won’t find him here honey,” she says and I look at her confused. “He is suspended right now, it wasn’t just any fight.” I am even more confused now, but I keep quiet as I wait for her to enlighten me.
“You see, Calum is a boy who prefers to be left alone. Really me and Ruby are the closest to his appearance here at school, you know with our hair colors and stuff.” She chuckles, Ruby and I laugh with her. “You do have amazing hair colors,” I say and I mean it. I wish I had the balls to die it in one of those colors.
“Thanks!” Ruby and Melody say at the same time and Ruby starts talking about maybe one day they can help me with my hair. I can see though that Melody is getting impatient and wants to continue with the story. “So, if he is alone most of the time, then why did he get suspended?” I ask so Melody can continue, she smiles at me appreciatively for it.
“Yes! Well because he is so different, some of the other boys bully him a lot. He usually doesn’t let it get to him, just ignores them,” Melody says. Ahw poor Calum. I have no idea who he is and how he looks, but I kinda feel sorry for him now.
“So last week he didn’t just shrug it off. He got into a fight with the biggest bully of them all, which of course happens to be all the teacher’s favorite and the most popular boy of the school. It’s a typical high school story really,” Melody shrugs, taking a glance at Ruby to make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything yet. Apparently they had some kind of telepathy because Melody seemed satisfied.
“You’re probably wondering though why he got suspended for getting into a fight? They don’t have a zero tolerance thing or anything,” Melody asked me, although it was almost a rhetorical question. I nodded anyway.
“Well, halfway through the fight, which Calum was winning by the way, that boy is way stronger than he looks,” she chuckles and zones out for a split second. Ruby quickly nudged her and she continued.
“Anyway, halfway through suddenly the backup of the bully jumps in. They saw their leader was losing and tried to save him. Calum got loose and tried walking away, but one of them quickly caught his arm. And then..” Melody trails off. I raise an eyebrow, I want to know what happened then. “.. and then he pulled a knife on them,” Ruby finishes.
My mouth falls open and my eyes grow wide. No way Calum just randomly carried a knife around did he? This must be some huge rumor. “That can’t be true though, can it? That he just happened to carry a knife with him?” I asked them. Ruby looks at Melody, as if she wants her to answer my question.
“Well we actually witnessed the fight,” she says, “and Ruby ran to get a teacher or something. So I was left standing there and I actually saw him pull the knife.”
This time I was positive my jaw had unhinged and fallen to the floor. Unbelievable that I was feeling sorry for this guy before. Who the hell carries a knife to school? I mean.. even if you get bullied.
The rest of my classes I spent completely zoned out and in thought. I was still absolutely shocked that someone would bring a knife to school. I wasn’t at all used to that. Is that normal here? Even though I really liked my new friends and I also liked this school, – as far as schools go of course – I really wanted to go home and talk to Anna and Grace. They might be able to make a bit of sense out of this.
At the end of the last class I said goodbye to Ruby and Melody, the three of us deciding on a meeting place for the next morning. I really liked those two already, they were as crazy as they were nice.
I walked home in deep thought and before I knew it, I was in front of my new house. I searched a full ten minutes for my key, then finally giving up and ringing the bell. My mom opened the door for me.
“Hey mom, lost my key already,” I told her. She tried to look disapprovingly, but she failed miserably and smiled. “I really didn’t expect anything else honey. Come in though, I made tea so you can tell me about your first day.”
We went inside and five minutes later we were seated at our new kitchen table, with steaming cups of tea in front of us. I told my mom all about my first day. I told her about Ruby and Melody, their crazy hair colors and their great sense of humor. I told her about our hilarious moment in art class. I told her everything, except for knife fight boy. I wanted to at least wait until I had told Anna and Grace. Which reminded me, I was going to skype with them an hour after I finished school. That’s in like two minutes. Oops!
“Mom, sorry but I have to go. I have a skype date with Anna and Grace,” I said to her. My mom smiled and nodded in understanding. “Okay sweety, have fun.”
I thanked her and ran upstairs, almost tripping, but I saved myself in the last second. I quickly logged on to my laptop and sat on my bed. Skype took ages to start up and log in, but as soon as I did I got attacked with messages.
Anna:
Faaaaaaaaaiiith! ♥♥
Grace:
Well hello Faith ♥
Faith:
Hello guys! I am already missing you!
Grace:
We know, because we’re awesome.
Anna:
Hahah you girls
Anyway, I’ll start the videocall.
Soon enough we saw each other’s faces and we greeted each other enthusiastically. There was a lot of waving and laughing and hellos involved.
“Faith! First things first. Are there hot boys at your new school?” Grace asked me with a huge smile.
“Of course,” I said, “all Australian boys are hot. I mean doesn’t Sydney boy already sound hotter than Plymouth boy? No offense to Plymouth boys obviously!” I said almost doubling over in laughter now.
Anna joined in to the ridiculous conversation. “Oh my god! Can someone get me a fan right now? Before I melt from the hotness of the words Sydney boy!” she choked out.
We all continued to be hilarious and awesome for a while. Then Anna suddenly became serious again.
“Seriously though, Faith, have you already made some new friends?” she asked me, looking genuinely concerned.
“Yeah I have, they are called Ruby and Melody. They are really awesome actually and pretty badass,” I half bragged about my new friends.
Grace chuckled at that. “Why are they so badass then?” she asked me.
“Well Ruby has light pink hair, like really baby pink, while Melody has icy blue hair. I wish I had the courage to die my hair in a color like that really,” I sighed.
My friends nodded along with that. I suddenly remembered I had to tell them about knife boy and a smirk appeared on my face. My friends noticed immediately.
“eh, Faith, do you have to tell us something?” Grace asked me, almost smirking herself.
“Yep,” I said to her, “I asked Ruby and Mel about the latest gossip, so I’d be up to date and everything,” I told them. My friends just continued to look at me, or well at the screen version of me, waiting for me to continue.
“Well, they told me the biggest rumor there is at the moment, only it isn’t a rumor because Melody witnessed it herself.”
I could see my friends becoming really curious, they actually got closer to the screen a bit.
“There is this boy at school and he is a bit different. He prefers to be on his own and things like that,” I said while they nodded to let me know they were listening.
“Well, he gets bullied. Normally he doesn’t care, ignores his bullies. Last week though he got in a fight and when the backup of his bully started fighting too, he pulled a knife on them.”
Grace’s jaw dropped and I could hear Anna audibly gasp. There were a few moments of silence, which my friends really needed to form a coherent thought. Finally though, Grace spoke up.
“Wow Faith.. that’s really.. eh something,” she said. I just looked at her with my ‘no shit Sherlock’ face. She quickly recovered now.
“I mean, who randomly carries a knife to school? Although maybe he has a good reason for it, you never know,” Grace said. Anna gasped again, this time at Grace’s last comment.
“Grace how can you even say that,” she scolded while still looking shocked, “any boy that brings a knife to school should be avoided. Whatever his reason is, he is dangerous.”
I drop the subject after that, spending another hour with them on Skype, hearing about their lives. My mom then calls for dinner though and I excuse myself. We agree to have another Skype date in two days time.
During dinner I am in such deep thought that my mom and dad often have to repeat their questions a couple of times before I get them. They pretty quickly give up on having a conversation with me, probably thinking I have a lot to process with a new school and all. That is partially true, though the only thing on my mind right now is the knife fight boy. I don’t even know why I call him that way, I know his name. Whatever.
After dinner I try working on my homework. Luckily, by some miracle it gets finished eventually, although it’s probably completely filled with mistakes. I don’t care though, I am still thinking about knife fight boy. I am trying to decide whether to listen to Grace or Anna. Find out his reason for bringing a knife or stay the hell away from him?
Before I fall asleep I made my decision. It is really stupid to get myself in danger with a boy that brings a knife to school. There are a lot more boys that are worth my time a lot more than this boy probably will be.
When this boy gets back, I will leave him alone. Just like he wants everyone to.
