I was four when I met Darry. I remember this day surprisingly well considering I was so young. It was hot outside and I was playing in my front yard. The Curtises were our neighbors, however I hadn't met them yet in my four years of existence. I was playing with a bright yellow ball my aunt Casey had bought me for my birthday. It rolled across the street and my reckless, small body chased after it fearlessly. I tripped shortly after picking up the ball and fell hard. I remember feeling like I was crying for hours before I felt someone swoop me up.
"Are you alright?" Said the boy who's arms I was wrapped in. I didn't respond. Just curled up in the eight-year-old boys chest.
"Come on Darry let's take her in the house" said another boy. This boy had blonde hair and was holding a baby. He seemed about my age, and not old enough to be trusted with a baby.
"Darrel! Sodapop!" Yelled a beautiful young woman as she approached us quickly. She grabbed the baby from Sodapop's arms and then took notice of the girl in her eldest sons arms.
"Darrel is she okay? Come on, bring her inside and I'll call her mother." She commanded and the boys followed. I was no longer crying, just slowly listening to the beating heart of Darry Curtis. I knew in that moment he was and forever would be my best friend.
