I stared up in the sky to the puffy white clouds as they moved silently across for another person as the cold wind made my cheeks turn pink. My arms were bundled across my chest, as my light jacket didn't do well to keep me warm. I rolled my eyes at my laziness to go to the coat closet on the way put of my front door. I tapped my feet up and down to try to bring some warmth into my legs, soon moving my arm down to rub it across my thighs as goosebumps scattered under my jeans. I tilted my head down to watch the playground ahead of me, blank and empty of the children's loud laughs and the twinkle in their eyes. I watched the swings fly with the wind, going up a tiny bit to rest again until another came. I watched older women walk with heavy steps in their workout wear, panting quietly as their dog trailed behind them, and businessmen walking through the park as a shorter way to escape the cold. I was about to get up and go home until I heard light, quick footsteps and heavier ones as they ran for the park. I watched the tall, lean man chase her playfully as she giggled and tried her best to pick up the pace with her tinier feet. I smiled as she went up the slide, her shoes keeping her from slipping up and the man grabbing her by the waist and spinning her around before putting her back down, earning a louder laugh than the last from her.
"Come on Daddy, Lets swing!"
My ears perked up at that. Daddy?
He looked a lot younger than my image of a dad. His face was free of any kind of wrinkles, he still looked alive and energetic as her watched his daughter waddle over to the swing set. She jumped and swung so she was sitting with her feet kicking out.
"Give me a head start!"
He laughed and pushed her gently only to send her flying in no time. Her squeals rang through the park as I watched people turn and smile at the sight, even in the cold, dry weather.
After ten minutes she was done swinging and she jumped off when the swing was high, I gasped as I thought she was going to hit the ground, wincing quietly so I was ready for the loud outburst of sobbing.
But instead I heard a booming laughter come from her, I opened my eyes as I watched the man catch her swiftly. He plopped her down and she turned to look around the park to find something else to do.
Thats when she spotted me.
"Daddy, who's that?" Her tiny finger pointed at me as he followed it, getting me in his vision.
"I don't know, sweetie."
He still kept me in his gaze, me shifting awkwardly as I waved. He looked oddly familiar, though I don't remember having anything to do with him.
"Hi, lady! I'm Emily! And I want to know why you were watching me while I was swinging." She ran over to me and stuck her little hand out to twist my hair around her finger. I watched her before she made her loud outburst at me again.
"Aren't you going to answer me?"
I turned my eyes to meet hers, a shining blue-green and practically popping out of their eye sockets.
"Emily's a beautiful name."
"Yeah, I know. But whats yours?"
I smiled at her, and she gave me a toothy grin, I noticed some of her teeth were missing.
"I'm Weslie."
"Wow! Pretty name."
"Not as good as yours."
"I know."
She giggled and in turn so did I, her loud, alive voice asking me another question.
"Why were you watching me and daddy?"
I glanced up at him, seeing him a few feet behind Emily as he made eye contact and smiled.
"Because you were irresistible to watch."
"What does that mean?"
"That means once I saw you, I couldn't take my eyes off of you."
She eyed me playfully.
"So you were stalking me?"
I laughed and so did she, the man having a small smile on his face.
"Almost. Luckily i'm not one of those big bad ones."
"Ew. Hate those."
She grinned again. I watched her teeth.
"Did the tooth fairy come give you money for your teeth?"
her eyes went wider and she turned to face her dad.
"Daddy! I was supposed to get money?"
I covered my mouth quickly as I choked back a laugh, the man going with wide eyes too.
"Uh, well, I guess the tooth fairy didn't have enough money to give you, so shes saving it for a special tooth." I answered for him, he breathed out a sigh of relief as she turned back to face me.
"So if I pull this tooth all out on my own, will that make it special?"
She grabbed for my hand and used the other one to show me the wiggling tooth.
"I would like to think so." I smiled at her and she gasped.
"DADDY! Will my teeth look like that?"
She quickly took my chin and nose to forcefully open my mouth so she can look at the teeth. He immediately took her hands off my face and gave me an apologetic smile. I laughed in return.
"If you love your teeth very much and take care of them I bet they will, princess." He smiled at her and she grinned.
"Lets go back so I can brush my teeth!"
She waved at me as she dragged her dad down the sidewalk.
"Bye, Weslie!" I smiled and waved back.
"Make sure the tooth fairy gives you the money!" She nodded vigorously and the man stared me down playfully and watched as he turned back around to face his daughter and bring her up to his shoulders, earning a laugh like when she was swinging. I got up quietly away from the bench as they faded from my vision, turning into a speck and then to nothing. i watched my knock-off doc martens and smiled as they padded against the dull sidewalk.
I went to the grab-and-go mart near my creaky, cheap apartment to grab some milk and store brand cereal, since it was the cheapest thing there. I wasn't too excited to go back there, the walls stunk of korean food from the previous owners, but that made it cheaper and i really couldn't complain from that.
I shopped from thrift stores around here, luckily i was pretty good at finding deals and ended up with a decent wardrobe. The knock off doc martens were my biggest find so far, and I wore them practically everyday.
I did work at a nearby coffee shop and babysat every now and then, so I was pretty busy. It was the best I could do at the moment, considering my parents kicked me out and refused to help me at least pay for college, I tried online learning. It wasn't the right thing for me. I liked to be engaged and not staring at a computer screen, it gave me headaches. I rushed through the door to my apartment and ignored the loud creak it gave off when I entered, and turned to slam it shut so it closed entirely and plopped on my squeaky, way to fluffy couch. My phone was buzzing on the coffee table loudly, I realized I had left it sitting there while I was at the park.
"Shit," I mumbled, and quickly leaned up to grab my phone.
11 missed calls from Nora.
I rolled my eyes but pressed the call back button.
"Hello?"
"Uh, you tried calling me 11 times, whats the deal with-"
"Finally! Weslie, This is urgent. I know you were at the park or whatever, whenever you go you always leave your phone here for some reason and i'll have you know.."
I barely listened as she trailed on about my phone habits, picking at the dirt under my nails that had come from god knows what.
"I need you to take one of my babysitting gigs tomorrow. My boyfriend was hoping to take me out to dinner and he's only in town for a few more days and I wont have a lot of physical contact with him once he leaves for the army and stuff so it would really mean a lot. Pleaaaaasse?"
I sighed because I felt guilty, I was really only her friend to get the babysitting gigs because she was popular with the moms and their kids, so she used me as a last resort. I nodded even though she couldn't see me, but I didn't know what until she spoke up, her unnaturally high voice filling the air.
"Well?"
I snapped out of it and replied, nodding my head more.
"Y-yeah, Sorry, I was checking my calendar to see if it worked, and it does. What time do I have to be there?
"Early afternoon, like One maybe?"
"Sure, okay. Thanks."
"No, thank you! Ah, this means the world. I have to go now, bye!"
I said bye back and hoped she has fun with her boyfriend quietly as I hung up the phone first, flopping back down, my muscles aching as much as the springs inside the couch.
I stayed like that for a couple of minutes before getting up to grab my old, worn out computer to find an email sent to me just a few minutes after Nora called me.
“Jeez,” I muttered, “She’s not very busy.”
I scrolled through the email, a whole list of rules I will have to abide by according to an email sent from the father. I had never seen her get one from a father, so this was all new. It was mostly things like what she can and cannot eat, her bedtime, and where I can find things if I need them. Also rules like not to mess with any of his stuff or go in any unwanted area, which is a good thing to include, i’m guessing, considering the amount of idiots that would go steal stuff. She gave me the exact time to show up, and that he didn’t want me to be more than 10 minutes late if I were to be. I usually am not late unless its for things that require getting ready like makeup, because lord knows it takes me 10 attempts to get it right without looking like I have a black eye. Noticing it was 3 o clock in the morning once I got of my computer from doing random things, I decided it was a good time to go lay in my bed, not that I was actually go to sleep, but maybe I’d get a couple of hours in. I hopped into my heavy, soft comforter and layed my head in my way too fluffy pillow I got from target at a lower price than I thought a pillow would be, and somehow immediately crashed into a deep sleep.
