Freedom

(Author's note - February 2018 challenge - exactly 100 words, not counting this note, with the theme of freedom.)


I stripped off my uniform and sank gratefully into the hot bath Miranda had prepared.

"Tough day?" she asked, concern in her soft voice.

"Another runaway. A captive from the last engagement. Lucky for her, I found her at the spaceport. She didn't know how to fly our ships."

"Perhaps she preferred to risk death rather than stay chained." Miranda's dry tone had my eyes dropping uncomfortably to her ankles, ankles from which I had personally removed the chains a month ago.

I woke alone.

My ship was gone.

They discovered it far out in space—Miranda fleeing to freedom.
