Mylion/Myli (Pronounced as Mill-ee-yon & mill-ee)
I dribbled my basketball deliberately as I crossed the courts floor, I had been challenged to a 1v1 by my brother Eli, so far the score was 9 to 7 despite the fact that I was ahead, Eli wasn't losing without putting up a fight
He held his arms wide open trying his hardest to keep me from the hoop but he couldn't stop me Eli was good at sports but I was even better
I teased him acting as if I was about to go to the left but actually went right, I jogged towards the goal but so did he, while I hopped into the air with the ball in my sweaty palms, Eli jumped up in an attempt to block me from shooting fortunately he failed as I tossed the ball near the entrance of the hoop making the shot. I swung from the ring with a smirk across my lips
"That was a foul and you know it was"He shouted, bending down to grab his knees and catch his breath
"How? You just mad cause I won"I hopped down from the hoop
"Let's run it back"Eli hated to lose, losing was definitely a pet peeve of his
"No bruh, you lost fair and square"
"A'ight so let's play again.. exactly you don't want to cause you know I'll beat you"
"You already lost it's giving sore loser and that ain't cute"I threw the small towel I used to wipe sweat over my shoulder, grabbed my book bag and placed the straps over my shoulders
"So you really not gon' play me again?"
"No, let's go foolie, we been 'posed to be home before the street lights came on"
"You right, momma finna cuss us out"
"No she bout to cuss you out cause I'm blaming this on you, you're the reason we going home so late"
"Wow you gone do me like that? Snitch"Eli grabbed his bookbag off of some bleachers, we proceeded to walk out of the gym
My straightened hair cascaded down my back as we walked down the filthy streets of Englewood, it was a very humid day although it was dark out it still seemed to be super hot
"I'm thirsty as hell"
"Shit.. We already late might as well stop at the corner sto'"
"Man no, I'm not that thirsty"
"We gon pass the sto' on the way there what difference would it make? We just gone go, you grab a drink, I'mma grab some chips, then go home"
"You really want ma to kick our asses out tonight huh? Cause you askin for it"
Eli kissed his teeth "She ain't gon kick us out, matter fact her ass better have some food on the stove a nigga hungry"
I tightened my fists around my bookbag straps "You ain't still sellin that stuff right?"I asked Eli, he looked down at the ground then at me
"Nah, I stopped but you understand why I was doing it right?"
"I do understand but that doesn't mean I think it's right. Momma don't need your help Eli"
"Yes she does, she can barely keep up with our rent"
"She said she got it, you don't need to worry about that"I stated
"I know but.. I just can't stand to see that look in her eyes, hate seeing her struggle. Since I'm the only nigga in the house I feel like I should be the one to provide for y'all"Eli said
"If you gone provide do it the right way get a job, what you tryna do end up like daddy?"
My father got locked up when I was a kid leaving our mom to fend for us, ever since I could remember she's been struggling to keep a roof over our heads
"You know I don't wanna end up like him"
"Exactly, so you shouldn't be taking risks"I said "Bro you're fire at football like you've got so much potential you could go to the NFL"
"The NFL does sound nice"Eli smiled
"Right? You gone be on tv living in a big ass house"
"Imma buy ma a house too, I'mma get you a little car"
"Mhm, what kinda car?"I questioned
"You know them hoopties we be seeing on 75th?"
I playfully punched his arm "Boy don't play with me"
We walked into the corner store, I went straight to the back where all the drinks were and grabbed a brisk sweat tea. I also grabbed a bag of Doritos and a long Rice Krispies treat
"Aye Myli! you done?"Eli questioned
"Yeah"
I met Eli at the cash register where he paid for our snacks. After the cashier put our things in a bag we walked out the store
"Lemme get some of your m&ms"I held my hand
"We were in the same store why didn't you get your own?"
"Cause I want yours now gimme some"
Just as he poured them in my hand a car blasting loud music slowly drove passed us, it didn't truly phase us until that same car drove passed us again
"Don't trip, just walk faster"Eli instructed
We continued our journey home, I'm pretty sure Eli sensed fear all over me because he asked "You good?"
I nodded "I just wanna get home"
"We almost there relax lil' folks. Let's sing a song"He put a arm over my shoulder "All my life I hustled just to get that moolah"
"And stack my change up then go see the jeweler"I sung along
"Standin' in the kitchen, I whip up that work!"
"All I ever had was the cocai-"
"Nah girl you skipped a line" Eli gently pushed me
"No I didn't! Yo ass don't know the song"I objected
"How you gone tell me? I listen to it everyday"
"Yo!"Came a loud, deep voice for that reason I looked back causing Eli to grab my shirt
"You stupid? Why you lookin, back keep walkin"
"Yo! let me talk to you real quick. I know you hear me talkin to you"The guy shouted
"We dont want no trouble we just tryna' get home"Eli responded
"I'm tryna' get home too. Is you gone stop or I'mma have to come get you?"The man asked
"Go home, run. Don't look back"Eli said sternly, shoving me forward as he stopped
"I'm not leaving you"
"Do as I say Myli, go"
I glared at the dude as he inched closer and closer to us. Hesitantly, I kept walking and Eli stayed behind. I hid beside a brick wall nearby and peeked my head out to see whatever was going on
Again, that car we saw a few streets back drove and parked beside my brother and the man he was talking to. Another dude hopped out the car and Eli started talking to him too
I couldn't depict who any of them were because they had on dark hoodies plus my eyesight ain't all that good
My phone started ringing in my pocket, I quickly pulled it out to silence it. It felt like I had taken my sight off of Eli for a split second before a loud gunshot filled my ears
A tightening of my throat and a short intake of breath forecast the explosion of shock I felt watching my brother grab ahold of his upper arm, he tried to run away but this time multiple shots rang
"Elijah!"I shouted
I knew I caught their attention but I didn't care I'd rather die alongside my brother than to hide just to save myself. I ran to him in doing so the men got back in the car and sped off
I fell to my knees beside Eli, blood was gushing out of multiple places on his body "Somebody help me!"I placed my hand over a wound to stop the bleeding but it didn't stop it at all, more blood just came spilling out
I took my phone and quickly dialed 911
"911 what's you emergency?"
"My brother! He's been shot I need an ambulance now"
"Okay, can you tell me where you are?"
"I'm on 6600 Morgan street, please send a ambulance"I tossed my phone and laid Eli's head on my lap
"Where has he been shot at?"The operator asked
"Everywhere, everywhere just send help please!"I shouted "Come on Elijah don't go like this, stay awake for me"
I could hear him gargling blood although a few seconds later he stopped, his body went completely limp and finally, he stopped breathing
After that night my life completely changed, the trauma I developed from that moment followed me into adulthood and nearly stole my happiness
