Chapter 2
"I'm sorry Ever I thought you would get away fast enough." Eternity said sneaking up on me on my way to school; I could see her dim glow as if she had a light bulb in her.
"Don't worry about it" I said looking to the side to see people staring at me like usual.
"I wish I were alive, I would have helped you out." She said looking down at the floor as she walked next to me.
"You know you say you wish you were still alive a lot, but really its way better being dead" I said adjusting my bag on my shoulder.
I felt a light breeze on my cheek as if someone kissed me after drinking a cold drink, I look to the side where Eternity is and she is gone. I slumped a little lifted my hoodie over my head and entered the school grounds.
I groaned and walked straight to my usual spot next to the library and facing the cafeteria window and once again almost everyone is staring at me. I seriously don't get it I check myself everyday in the mirror and see if there is anything wrong with my face or what but I don't see anything, I don't get people now a days.
The bell is close to ringing to go to first hour my least favorite time of the day. I dig though my bag for my favorite book of all time 'Baby face' that I have read since I was in 7th grade. I flipped to the first page and began to read trying to ignore ever glare I get from girls and every stare I get from guys.
"Attention students please report to the auditorium there have been technical difficulties in the classrooms...thank you." The principal said in the intercom.
I read a few more sentences closed my book and shoved it in my bag a popping a piece of gum in my mouth. I stood and noticed Aaron the guy that Eternity was saying was looking at me, but what made me stop in my tracks was that he stood from his table looked right into my eyes and are you ready for this...he smiled at me. I gawked at him like a moron, everyone else just stared and he use to stare too but I don't know what I did that he smiled.
I shook my head and zipped past Aaron and his friends to the auditorium without looking at him again, I know it must be my imagination.
In the auditorium I sat in the second to the very back with my bag in my lap and one earphone in my ear and popped a bubble. The auditorium began to fill with students I ignored every eye on me and fumbled with my IPod.
"Why are you sitting back here Ever? You should be at least in the middle where the cool people are at." Eternity said appearing sitting down next to me.
"Because I like the back, if I were in the front I give better access to people who stare a lot AKA the whole school." I whispered still looking down at my IPod looking for a song.
"Gosh Ever you make it so hard to make you popular." She said crossing her arms
"Eternity I am not like you I never will." I whispered loudly looking at her now.
"That's the thing you are like me, remember when I went to school with you? You and I would have our own friends and the whole school knew us." She said tilting her head towards the students gathering in chairs.
"Yeah and now I'm the school freak now that you're gone because you know why....I talk to my dead sister." I almost said out loud but managed to whisper.
She frowned at me and a glittery tear fell from her eyes and disappeared with that familiar light breeze that I'm pretty sure I can only feel, outside thunder roared and shook the room.
"Great now I have to walk home in the rain." I said to myself hugging my bag to my chest and laying my chin on it. I inhaled deep and waited for whoever was going to talk on stage when I smell passed through my nose that made my mouth water.
I know it wasn't food because I wasn't hungry but a smell that most girls would go crazy for if a guy had it on. I slowly lifted my head and turned to the side and saw Aaron and his friends laughing and joking around about 4 inches away. I could feel his eyes on me but I quickly recovered and grabbed my book and began reading were I left off.
"Okay students please take your seats announcement will begin" Principal Howards said in the mic on stage.
Everyone slowly began to quiet down and find seats; I shoved my book back into my bag and struggle to keep my head from turning towards Aaron who was looking for a seat.
I heard a ruffle behind me and I began to panic I whipped my head around and my eyes went huge, Aaron and his friends were right behind me. I avoided eye contact and went through the announcement most of what Mr. Howard said was that they accidently forgot to close the vents in the classroom to kill the rats in the roof so the classroom's will not be available to be used but will have class in here, good thing this school isn't that big.
I sighed and slumped down in my chair forgetting about who is behind me. I felt like I was in some scary movie that the stalker was following you and was going for the kill. Mr. Howard talked none stop about something but I didn't listen, I pulled out my book again and read the whole school day with not even a peep from Eternity.
It was finally time to leave and go home Mom texted me earlier and said she was going to pick me so we can go shopping for food and other things, and when I say shopping I say Wal-Mart. I sat outside of the school in the benches everyone has left and I was the only one there waiting, my mom always had a tendency to be late I was use to it.
"Peace out McDaniel!" Someone yelled out their car.
Annoyed that they interrupted my awesome book I turned to glare at whoever it was and so to come it was Aaron's obnoxious friends and like always when they drove passed me they stared, I shook my head and continued to read my book. I was just at the part when Baby was about to tell her mom the truth someone awkwardly sits next to me I ignored whoever it was because I knew they would be staring.
"Um don't you ever read another book Ever?" That someone said next to me.
"Because this is-"I cut myself off and slowly looked up and just as I figured...Aaron.
"What?" He said confused. I sat there silent shocked that the very first time someone talked to me since Eternity died.
"Um do you want me to leave?" He said with the same expression
"N-no I-I I'm sorry um..." I shuddered I couldn't find what to say and he laughed.
"Would you get it out already?" He said smiling at me.
"Okay no offence but why are you talking to me" I said looking down and closing and opening my book.'
"Why I can't talk to you?" He said looking a little hurt.
"No it's not that don't you notice how everyone you know-"I was cut off and looked up at him
"Stares at you?" He asked lifting an eyebrow and tilting his head a bit.
"Yeah" I said slowly looking down at my hands again.
"I guess I know why..." He said silently to himself but I clearly heard it.
"Well you never answered my question." He said resting his arm behind me.
"I well I like this book." I said with a little voice watching his every move not trusting him not one bit, I could still smell his cologne his amazing smell something I have never smelled before.
"I can tell...Do you need a ride home or something?" He asked standing up looking down at me.
"Uh no my mom's picking me up actually." I said shoving my book in my back pack again and standing up.
"Um how old are you?" He asked taking one step away.
"17"
"And you don't drive?"
"I do I have my license but yeah I-I don't have a car so yeah I walk home."
"Oh okay then...see ya around" He said with a wink and pulled his keys out of his pocket and walked away.
As soon as he left mom pulled up honking the horn I looked towards Aaron and he laughed as he turn on his car and drove away, I ducked my head and climbed into the car.
"Who was that boy you where talking to." Mom asked
"No one he just asked me a question." I said almost telling the truth.
"Oh okay..." She said but something was up she park the car.
"What's wrong?" I asked and she sighed.
"They are looking for your father."
"Who is?"
"The police."
"Why?"
"Today the FBI and I don't know who else barged into the house today."
"Why?"
"Because they were looking for evidence for your um sister." She said with a tear in her eyes
"You mean how she was killed?" I asked rolling my eyes.
"Yes" And she broke out crying.
"Mom not again Eternity is fine believe me please."
"How do you know?" She asked wiping away her tears.
"Cause I-I just know okay." I hesitated
"What did they find when they were searching the house?" I asked changing the subject.
"They have the evidence they need he's going back to prison this time for life." She said with a little smile.
I sat in silence even though that should be good news but something didn't feel right, like if I know he's not going to prison he will find a way I shook my head from the negative in my head.
"That's good but where is he now?"
"I don't know so that why we should go shopping I don't want to run into him anymore...let the police find him I called them and told them to stay put at home and he will eventually show up." She said looking really serious.
I sighed and leaned back onto the seat while mom drove off to where ever she was going to go.
"Ever can you please tell her...please?" Eternity begged appearing in the back seat I shook my head no.
"Come on Ever I want to talk to Mom but she can't see me...please!" She begged again.
I turned around and pretended to look for something in the back seat while I shook my head angerly at her.
"PLEASE!"
"NO!!!" I said sitting back down facing the front.
"No what?" mom asked still looking straight ahead.
"Oh nothing I thought I had my other book in here...must have left it at home." I said with a fake smile.
"Oh please Ever you have always been such a bad liar." Eternity said laughing.
I turned my head and stuck my tongue out at her.
"Honey what are you doing?" Mom asked catching me doing that.
"I had a hair in my mouth mom geez." I said dramatically
"Okay okay I'm sorry" She said looking back at the road.
"Bye Ever see you later and please consider telling Mom." Eternity said disappearing into the light of the sun.
"Wait-where are you going?" I said out loud meaning to say it in my head.
"Well I don't know yet but I would really like to go to Wal-Mart." Mom said "Why are you so jumpy"
"I'm not your just asking a lot of question and you're making me nervous." I said taking out my IPod and turning it up.
~Later that night~
We arrived home and there is a police car in the front yard we parked the car in the drive way and got out to meet the police men.
"Ma'am he came back but he somehow managed to escape so if you see him at any time please give us a call." The police guy said walking back to his car.
"Whoa wait your not staying what if he comes back and tries to hurt us." Mom asked scared now.
"I'm sorry there is nothing I can do if he shows up just call" He said getting the car and speeding away.
"Stupid cops now a days they don't do shit for their lives we might as all be dead." I said walking inside the house.
"Hey young lady do not use that language" Mom said scolding me I just shrugged and go straight to me room.
"Are you hungry?" Mom yelled from the kitchen unloading the bags.
"No I think I'm just going to go jog." I said hoping to find Eternity.
I undress picked out clothes to wear, the clothes I picked out are a pair of Bermuda sweat pants, a tank top and a small jacket that matched the sweats. I was feeling really hot so I decided to take a nice cold shower and wash my hair while I'm at it. After words I put my shoes on waved Mom goodbye and ran out the door only to stop in front of the mailbox.
"Heyy Everrrrrrrr" Eternity sang my name.
"Hey." I said feeling happy to see her again.
"Whatcha doinnn?" She said walking around in a circle.
"Well about to go for a run." I said walking away while she followed.
"I saw who you where talking toooo" She sang again.
"Who?" I asked thinking that she's lieing.
"You hubby wubby Aaron." She said with a kissy face.
"What are you talking about yeah I talked to him but his not my "Hubby wubby"" I said quoting.
"He likes you and I know you like him." She said bouncing around me.
"No not really I don't care if he likes me and I don't like him." I said annoyed.
"Ever please you can't be mean to me." She said extremely serious.
"Why not..you can't tell me what to do." I glared at her while she had a sad face on.
"Because I can't-"Then she disappeared
"You can't what?" I yelled at the sky.
But nothing just silence she disappeared frustrated, I ran as fast as I could and before I knew it I was at the school's track field.
"This seems like a good place to run I have never seen it before." I said talking to myself walking to the middle of the field.
I begin to run around the field feeling the fresh dawn breeze on my sweaty forehead and cheeks. I closed my eyes and ran only feeling the breeze and the concrete ground under my feet and the smell of fresh cut wet grass. I didn't open my eyes to check for which direction I was going but I was going about how the ground would feel and now I regret that.
I slammed into what felt like a huge rock and fell down on the floor hitting my butt really hard.
"Whoa are you okay?" Someone said trying to help me up I still had my eyes closed.
"I'm sorry I didn't-" I open my eyes and what a coincidence its Aaron.
"Do you break anything do you need to go to the emergency?" He asked panicked.
"N-no I-im fine." I stuttered getting up awkwardly cause my butt really hurt.
"Are you like following me or something?" He said a smile playing at his lips.
"No." I said annoyed and walked past him trying not to walk awkwardly.
"Hey hey wait I was joking." He said grabbing my arm.
I turned around to face him yanked my arm away from him.
"What do you want from me?" I asked irritated that he killed my moment of peace.
"What do you mean?" He asked confused.
"Okay no one in that damn school talks to me they stare...what are you in some bet or something cause let me tell your about to lose." I said turning around attempting to walk away but he moved in front of me.
"What are you talking about I'm not in a bet, I just noticed that you never talk to anyone and I thought you needed someone to talk to...instead of yourself..." He said looking at me awkwardly.
Dang I thought I was fooling people when I talked to Eternity at school...guess not cause he noticed
"I don't talk to myself" I said looking down with my arms crossed.
"Um yeah you do." He said smiling.
"Nope" I said looking at a swaying palm tree
"Okay so if you not talking to yourself then who?" He asked trying to look at my eyes.
"Okay what are you stalking me or something how do you know that?" I asked trying to change the subject it seemed to work.
"Um hello did you forget you're like the schools most talked about. So since I've been in sports I didn't pay attention but now that I quit I noticed that you did." He said
"Oh" Was all I said and slowly turned around and walked away.
"Sooo do you mind I walk you home or do you prefer to run?" He asked smiling catching up to me as I walked away.
"No I prefer to walk and sure if you want to I don't care." I said casually.
"Okay cool." He said smiling at me.
We walked in silence it was kind of awkward at first but we started talking about what he did and his family I spoke about me my favorite books and such and movies and a little bit I mean a little bit about my parents that's it and we finally made it to my house.
"So I guess I'll see you around school or whatever." He said taking a step back
"Yeah see ya" I said with a little wave and went inside.
"Ever you have to leave go!" Eternity said panicked and disappeared again.
"Ever get out of here hurry!" I hear mom yell at me with Dad chasing after her.
I ran out the door with no hesitation and never stopped tears running down my eyes of the horror in Mom's eyes.
"Ever Aaron is on the other street catch up to him hurry!" Eternity yelled at me while I ran as I could.
I did as she told me and ran to the other street and saw Aaron walking casually about to turn into what I'm guess was his house.
"AARON!" I yelled after him
He turned around and he saw the fear in my eyes and ran to me.
"What's wrong Ever what happen" He said before I could reach him
I ran to him and hugged him tight and cried on his shirt.
"I'm so sorry I had to leave I'm sorry." I cried
"No its okay what happened?" He asked really worried and looking around to see who was coming.
"I need your help it's the only way to keep me alive right now." I cried.
"It's okay Ever I'll be here for you...I promise." He said wiping away my tears.
