The Pomeroys’ sandbox was an old tractor tire set under a tree in their back yard, but Zeke wandered away from it, in search of his own fun. Ethan followed him to the garden, crouching when the boy thumped to sit in soft dirt. “Sand would have brushed off,” his Guardian said conversationally.
Zeke patted the soil, squeezed a handful, then tasted the stuff.
“And you are flattening seedlings.”
Tad found him, and his serious gray eyes took on a shine. “Putting down roots, Zeke?” Raking his fingers through the soil, he proudly said, “That’s good. ’Cause this is home.”
