I'll be patient for an extra month
Till I see your face & feel
Your breath
wrap your fingers around my tongue
Hold back the words that threaten to fall.

We will talk sometimes with a swallow
So no one else can hear. Threaten me
With a break in our friendship if I try
To show my feelings. Don’t
Remind me about the paintings
Of me on your bedroom wall.
It might raise up feelings best forgotten.
I’m just a memory that pops up
Every year. A constant source of
Your sadness, a totem of your loss. I know
Because I feel the same right here.
