Chapter Twenty ~ Gonna Get Caught

Suddenly, everything was too bright. The soft yellow light had turned into a harsh beam. Sounds were louder. The conversations boomed loudly in my ear and I could suddenly hear birds chirping from outside.

I glanced down at my trembling hands and gasped. I needed to stop the shaking, but I couldn’t. The fear and anxiety bit eagerly at my mind, driving the rest of my body insane.

Gretchen noticed my sudden anxiety and spoke loudly, “Damien? Are you okay?”

My eyes shot up from the hands and gazed into her clear green eyes. “What?” My voice was shaky and broken.

Levi glanced over his shoulder at me. His eyebrows were pulled into a questioning look. “Damien?”

I needed to call Dad. That would fix everything. “Yes, yes. I’m fine. I just remembered I promised to check in with my dad after we arrived.”

Gretchen started to talk and I saw Levi smiling at me. I didn’t pay attention to the any words spoken. My mind was too restless.

            “Damien!”

“Hm?” I questioned, breaking away from my thoughts.

“You can’t get service here,” she repeated.

Sam let out a frustrated sigh as she fell back onto the sofa. “Unfortunately…”

“What do you mean there’s no service?”

“It means your cell phone won’t work here,” Levi explained, throwing an arm around my shoulder. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

            “Where can I find signal?”

He merely shrugged. “Probably just the edge of Clearbourough. The road that leads here cuts through the woods so signal would be very weak, if at all.”

I began to shake more. The sensation caught up to my teeth, making them clatter against each other. My whole body was shaking now.

            No. No! NO!

Instinctively, I latched onto Levi’s arm. “Take me back, now!”

His confused look didn’t change. If anything, it became more severe. “Damien…” His voice was soft and laced with concern. “What’s wrong?”

I had somehow gained the interest of the others. Henry returned from the kitchen. Sam sat up straight in her seat, and Jax raised a brow. They stared at me with questioning looks.

“N-nothing is wrong. I need to go back home.” I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing myself to relax but I couldn’t. Dad was going to rob them without knowing Crystal was there. And here I was, rolling around in bed with Levi. I needed to warn him.

Silence washed over us. It was a few moments before Gretchen broke the silence. “Okay, we’ll take you home. In the morning, we can-”

“No!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. “I need to go now!”

Henry stifled a laugh. “Son, it is eleven at night. I’m sure-”

Levi cut him off before he could finish. “It’s okay, I got this.” He snaked his hand around mine and pulled me out of the cabin, down the steps and into his car. He moved swiftly, not wasting any time.

He got into the car hastily and slammed the door behind him. I followed suit and strapped myself in just as he started up the car.

We stayed in silence as he pulled onto the paved road and kept his gaze fixed on the road. My mind relaxed a bit as I realized I’d be able to stop Dad before he decided to do the deed.

Levi let himself relax and removed one hand from the wheel. He looked over to me.
“Are you going to tell me what this is about?”

            I sighed heavily. “I can’t.”

“What do you mean you can’t?” His tone had grown bitter and annoyed.

“I can’t.” I wanted to. I wanted nothing more than to tell him, but I couldn’t. He would never look at me the same.

He took a deep breath. “I know you don’t like questions but god dammit, tell me! I try to be patient with you Damien and it’s because I love you. But this needs to stop. I know nothing about you. You are a complete stranger to me. I don’t want to be strangers. We just had sex for crying out loud! I want you to open up to me.

I pressed my lips together, staying silent. He was right. He knew nothing about me and I knew everything about him. But, it was better this way. If he found out who I was, things would never be the same.

After a few more moments of silence, he spoke. “This isn’t because of what we did, right?”

I could feel myself snap. Every vein popped. Every drop of blood boiled. I convulsed, clamming my hands down on the dashboard. “Oh my fµcking god! This is not about you! Stop talking and just drive!”

Levi’s confused expression faded and was soon replaced by a blank stare. Without thinking twice about it, he slammed on the brakes. The car came to a screeching halt and he pulled the keys out of the ignition.

I jerked forward from the movement and stared at him wide-eyed. “What the hell are you doing?”

He shoved the keys into his pocket and climbed out of the car, not bothering to close it. He began to walk in the direction of which we came.

“What?” I asked myself as I rushed out of the car and called after him. “Levi! What are you doing?”

“Going back!” he yelled back. “Find your own way back to Clearbourough.”

I stomped my foot and sputtered profanities. I didn’t mean to snap at him, but this situation as stressful enough. I stalked over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Levi, I’m sorry.”

“Why?” He asked, throwing his hands into the air. “Why should I take you back? Why can’t you tell me what’s going on?”

            “Because I can’t!”

            He pursed his lips.

“I promise I’ll tell you everything you need to know and you don’t need to know this. My dad is in danger! I can’t tell you how and I can’t tell you why. You just have to trust me. I need to save him.”

Sweat fell down my brow as I continued to stare at Levi.

Eventually, he heaved a sigh. “Alright,” he said. “I’ll take you.”

“Thank you so much!” I grabbed the back of his neck and tugged him closer, pulling him into a long passionate kiss. I knew in the back of my mind, this would be the last time I kissed him and I wanted to remember it for the rest of my life.

His hands moved down to the small of my back as he dipped his tongue into my mouth, deepening the kiss.

He pulled away abruptly and rested his forehead against mine, breathing heavily. “I really love you, Damien,” he breathed. His thumb brushed away my sweat. “And don’t…don’t ever forget it.” He concluded with a small peck on my lips.

I wanted to say it back, but I had no clue what it would mean. It would fill his head with happiness but that happiness would be ripped away from him when he found out the truth. I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t make empty promises. “I won’t.”
