Chapter 12: The Moon Pulls The Tides

Feeling the warmth of Zayden's body next to mine was the greatest feeling in the world. I could feel Zayden's body rise and fall with each breath he took. I blinked open my eyes, realizing he had his arm over my waist and his chin was on my shoulder as he breathed down my neck. Sending chills down my spine. This was the first time he moved so close to me while sleeping since the first night I asked him to stay with me.

"Zayden, wake up," my voice croaked.

I gently picked up his arm and moved it away. Tonight was the full moon. Tonight, Zayden was supposed to help teach me to shift into my wolf. Zayden began to shift, wrapping his arm around my waist once again, pulling me tighter into his chest.

"Mmm, good morning princess," his voice was deep and sexy.

It was like music to my ears, putting me in a small trance. I was enjoying his presence way too much. He leaned over to kiss my cheek. I couldn't help but to smile as the warmth from his kiss seeped through my cheek like a small fire spreading.

"Good morning Zayden. Now, will you give me some space," my voice was still croaky from waking up. Stupid morning voice. So embarrassing. I let out a sigh of defeat.

I pulled myself forward and crawled out of the warm blankets. Leaving Zayden laying there with empty blankets. He watched me intently as I grabbed a pair of clothes for the day.

"Are you going to get ready?" I said slightly nervously yet excited at the same time. I wanted to see how this wolf shifting would go.

"Yeah, yeah," he mumbled, waving his hand at me to leave him alone.

It didn't take us long to get ready and eat breakfast. I made sure Aaylah had plenty of food, water, and a clean cat box before leaving.

"Are we going to try and shift in the training field?" I asked, curious to know if we would be in an open field or somewhere more private.

"No, we will go into the woods for a bit for more privacy. How about near the waterfall? It's got plenty of trees while still near the castle," he suggested.

"Sounds perfect," I gave him a small smile.

We made our way down to the waterfall. The cold wind hit my face as it came in gusts. The water rippled below the waterfall with mist hovering over it. It was a gloomy and cold day which added to the feeling that I felt unsubtle for some reason.

The full moon had a way of affecting me since I was a kid. I just figured because I was made of 60-70 percent water that the gravitational pull was what was happening. Now, I was certain that was not the complete reason.

"Okay, we will train here for a bit until it gets late enough that the moon is present enough to want to force us to shift," Zayden said nonchalantly.

He dropped the bag he was holding that was most likely filled with weapons. As he unzipped it, I noticed that I was correct. There were a bunch of guns and bullets. He pulled out some papers and unrolled them, circles covered the paper from big to small. They were targets. Zayden took some thumbtacks and started setting up the targets on trees, using the bark for a surface that a thumbtack could go through.

"Ready?" he asked handing me a handgun.

I took it and loaded it the magazine.

"Always," I smirked.

I had recently discovered I had a slightly better aim then Zayden. He shook his head in disapproval. I turned the safety off the gun and pulled back the trigger, aiming at my target.

"Don't miss," Zayden tried to distract me.

Bang! I hit the target in one of the inner circles. I heard Zayden chuckle, thinking it wasn't good enough. I rolled my eyes at him. Bang! I hit the next target dead center.

"Take that," I smirked.

His jaw just dropped slightly.

"Okay, okay, you're good," he raised his hands in retreat, shaking his head in disbelief.

"So how exactly did the Darkmoon pack come to be?" I asked him. The books I have read said a lot, but I they didn't say how the Darkmoon pack had a Queen that was a witch instead of the regular Luna and Alpha deal.

"Haven't you been reading?" Zayden furrowed his eyebrows.

"Yeah, but why do they have a Queen?"

"Well, the story goes that the reason they have a Queen is that she was a witch.  She had gained control of rogues. Promising them a pack if she was their leader, even though she was no werewolf," he paused looking at me with curiosity.

"They just followed her?" I asked.

Zayden shrugged.

"She manipulated them, and bound herself to evil forces; with that, she created a darkness in all of the werewolves that followed her. They gave her undeniable loyalty. They became servants of the darkness, including your father..." he trailed off.

The thought of this made me imagine that she was like the Devil's queen, but I couldn't shake the thought that the darkness ran in my veins. How could it not? One of my parents had been bounded to it.

After a while of target practicing, Zayden and I sat down by the water's edge. Watching the mist and fog build-up, creating a majestic and eerie view.

"How is that I am one of a kind? Certainly, there have been witch and werewolf couples before," I muttered.

"Your mother did a ritual with some goddesses. Very deep and dark magic. Most witches don't dare cross that path," he began. "Offspring of werewolf and witch couples will generally have one or the other ability, but your mother found a way to ensure you had both. At least that's what they say," he shrugged.

"We don't know if I can shift yet," I said quietly.

"Your mother was the offspring of a witch and werewolf. So you had the werewolf gene in both parents, don't doubt yourself yet," he gave me a reassuring smile.

"I kind of wish I knew my real parents, just to see what they are like," my voice quivered.

I felt like I was missing a big part of my life by not truly knowing them.

"I'm sure they were wonderful people who made a wonderful daughter," he said.

He rested his hand on my knee and squeezed it gently before letting go. Causing the currents of pleasurable electricity to shoot up my thigh, making my stomach flutter.

"Let's begin?" he asked, snapping me out of my mesmerized state.

I nodded my head and took a deep inhale. We turned to face each other. I sat with my legs tucked beneath me and my hands resting on my thighs.

"So how do I start?" I asked.

He gave a small chuckle. The deepness of his laugh was like the deep sea exposing the beautiful creatures it held in it's darkest depths. Pure beauty that captivated my attention.

"Ironically, it's similar to how you were able to focus on your magic, but a little different," his voice filled with passion.

Everything about the man in front of me was more then I could have ever wanted. He intrigued me by just living.

"Close your eyes. Take some deep breathes and relax," his voice was soft, gentle.

I closed my eyes. Inhaling deeply and exhaling slowly, trying to relax. I focused on emptying away all thoughts and relaxing my muscles slowly from head to toe.

"Then dig deep and look within you, call out to her. Your wolf," Zayden's voice guided me.

I focused on looking deep inside myself. It was like my mind was taking me through dark tunnels. Are you there? My wolf?  I called out in my head, trying to focus on finding the deepest part of me. I found an empty, dark area, in my mind. Or was I just imagining this? It appeared almost like a dungeon.

I saw a figure on the cold, hard, ground. I slowly walked towards it. Is that you?  I asked. Hoping it was my wolf. If it was, she was not moving. This made my stomach twists in knots that made me slightly cringe, is it possible she was dead? I walked closer and closer. The figure that laid before me was definitely a wolf. As I got by her side I could see her sides moving in and out, as she breathed shallowly. A feeling of relief washed over me. She was alive.

Hey, are you my wolf? I tried to call out and wake her, but nothing. I reached my hand out and laid it on her forehead gently, not wanting to startle her. As soon as my fingers felt her soft fur, a rush of energy shot through my arm and into my body. It was painful making me cringe and groan in pain, but at the same time, it felt exhilarating. I could feel myself gaining new energy.

My body felt paralyzed and as cold as ice itself. All I could do was look at my wolf as her eyes snapped open, showing completely black irises. I felt that I was staring into the pits of darkness. Darkness... what if my wolf was the darkness?  I felt fear spread through my body, making me tremble, but I was hopeless. I could not move.
