You think I’m evil, that I did what I did out of hate for mankind. You’re wrong. I don’t hate humans. I was, and am, one, remember? I do, however, hate what humans did to me. I was never really intending to enslave mankind, but if that was what it took, I would have done it. I hated the confinement, only being able to come out at night, and then only on occasion. I missed the sunlight on my skin, the ability to tan. I missed the feel of blood running through my veins, rather than down my throat. Why then, you may ask, did I have my fellow vampires try to take Mel, and convince them that I wanted to take the Overland for our kind? Support. I had heard of the orb of darkness, and knew it would set my free from my prison. Mel, of course, was the only one who could activate it.
If I had known of the orb of life, then my story would be a very different one. I would’ve gone to Galahad, for surely he would help me, as he wished to be human as well. Te’ijal might have also helped, but she would’ve gotten herself and her husband out of the caves as quickly as she could, which would be quickly indeed. Mel would have still been needed, but we would not have forced her, and she could have returned to life in Harburg, if she so chose. But the past is the past, and there is no changing it. The world of “what if” has no place. So instead I’ll tell you what was.
Enclosed in this book are the years of my life, from humanity, to vampirism, and back to humanity. Maybe after reading these pages, you’ll understand me. Perhaps you’ll see me as I really am.
