Chapter Three - Into the Unknown
My head hurt, and I don't mean your common hang over pain. One that could be cured by a juicy hamburger, I've never felt such pain before; it wasn't just excruciating pains in my head, it was everywhere, especially my arm.
"Why...Why did I drink so much last night?" I mumbled, sitting up in my bed, pushing back the doona cover. "Wait I'm in bed?" I don't remember how I got home; the last thing I can recall is being in the middle of the street, after that everything is black and unclear.
Getting out of bed I looked down at my clothes, the exact same ones from last night; I was even still wearing my heels. What the hell was that? I hate these damn things, why on earth would I keep them on? Let alone sleep with them still attached, I must of been blind drunk.
I groan softly, pulling off the stupid shoes. My nose scrunched up in disgust, they smelled like something had died in them. I nearly vomited they were that bad, I mean normally my feet didn't stink that bad. But now I could even smell bacon and eggs, which was odd because the kitchen was on the other side of the house; not to mention I wasn't there cooking them. Then who was?
My eyes widened in shock, there was someone in the house. I knew it wasn't Eliza because she was a bitch and would have woken me up, plus she was worse than me when it came to hang overs; she'd still be in bed for at least another four hours, and it was 10 am by now.
I desperately looked around my room for some sort of weapon; of course I came up empty handed. Who keeps those sorts of things in their bedrooms? I certainly didn't.
"Crap...Crap..." Great now I'm freaking out, for all I knew a murder could be out there waiting to kill me. With breakfast? Hardly made any sense, they probably have some sort of weird fetish; but that was besides the point, I could very well die this morning.
No way in hell was I going to let some asshole steal my food and murder me. Working up the courage I grabbed the best weapon I could find, my smelly heels; simple but deadly, I just hoped they didn't have a gun.
Slowly I opened my bedroom door, my heart pounding in my chest, the shoe raised at the ready. I was careful not to make any noise, I had the element of surprise on my side but that would only go so far. I took a deep breath and rounded the corner, shoe poised at the ready as I face down my foe, their back towards me; I had the ultimate opportunity to strike.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you princess, you'll just get yourself hurt." The figure turned around, a lazy smirk upon his face, he also so happened to be wearing my bathrobe; I'll be sure to burn it to ash later.
"You!" I exclaimed, memories of the previous night came flooding back. I looked down at my arm, the wound was covered in bandages, how did I not notice that before?
"Me." He replied, the smirk still present as he moved his head to the side, dodging the shoe I had thrown at him
"What the hell have you done to me?"
"We already spoke about this, you're a werewolf now." He explained. "I bit you on a full moon, therefore you are now in transition."
"This doesn't make any sense. You aren't supposed to exist in this world!" I refused to believe I was now a supernatural creature, I mean don't get me wrong something like this would be amazing, amazing but scary.
"I'm not a scientist or a doctor; I don't know how it works. Were practically the same as any human medically speaking, only difference is that we burn at a higher temperature, according to them we have a fever 24/7."
"Don't you have some sort of mentor who could explain these sorts of things? Or a pack like you know, normal wolves have?"
He shook his head, disappointment crossed his features. "No, I don't. My creator bit me and then abandoned me, he didn't exactly leave me with a how to guide." He paused briefly to sit down at my dining room table, I soon followed; sitting down across from him. "You know almost as much as I do. I was bitten only a few weeks ago."
"Oh...Well thank you for sticking around I guess."
"Believe me; you'll need all the help you can get for what comes next."
I gulped; I was now a werewolf, what more could come? Surely I had surpassed the worst of it? Wasn't my arm proof enough of that?
"What comes next?"
"Your first change princess, the most excruciating pain you will ever feel in your existence." He spoke plainly but you could see the uneasiness in his pale blue eyes, he almost looked frightened for me, almost. "Plus you may not survive, if your body rejects or fights the...Virus so to speak, you will die."
I stared at him in disbelief, how could he do this to me? When he didn't even know if I would survive. I wanted to scream at him, hit him or do something but I was frozen in shock, I couldn't do anything but gape at him.
I stared at him for a very long time, I wanted to know why, why me? Of all people what made me so special? We didn't even know each other's name for god's sake!
"Tell me your name" I demanded. "If I'm going to die I ought to know the name of the person who killed me."
"Edwin" He replied, unfazed by my demand "Edwin Bane. And I must say princess; it is a pleasure to meet you."
I growled at him, how very animistic of me. "Stop calling me that. My name is Aveline, and I can't very well say the pleasure is mutual"
"Hmm, well princess I am sure you will learn to love the name. But for now we need to get you prepared for what comes next any questions?"
Of course I had a ton of questions, one's I wasn't even sure if he knew the answer to; he did say he was bitten only a few weeks ago, so I stuck with the basics; well as basic as you could get with this sort of thing.
"So you were bitten, not born a werewolf?"
"Yes" Edwin replied
"I'd imagine they are a great deal stronger than us."
"Essentially yes, but I guess it would depend on their rank."
I was pacing around the living room by now, which was connected to the dining area; where he stayed put eating the breakfast he had apparently made for himself. The room was modern in design but had a family feel to it, even though I didn't have any. Books and magazines littered the old furniture, paintings of various nature scenes hung on the wall
"Ranks? What do you mean by that?"
"Well in a pack everyone has a rank, pack leader is the Alpha. They pretty much they say jump and you scream how high." Edwin said bitterly, clearly he didn't like rankings. "Then you've got your Beta's and Delta's. Beta's are next in line for Alpha and Delta is next in line for Beta. That is all you need to know"
"What rank are we?"
"Well since we're not really in a pack we have no rank. However you would be an Omega, which is the lowest rank but that, is only because you are newly bitten."
I frowned, this whole pack ranking stuff was confusing as all hell, but hey I had to ask. There was one question I was dying to ask, I was buzzing with excitement.
"What sort of abilities do we have besides being able to turn into a wolf?"
"Well....Hmm there is-" He was pausing far too much for my liking. "The obvious. Our senses become super heightened, takes some getting used to but you'll adjust." He tapped his chin in thought, it was adorable but frustrating.
"What else?" I ask, my eagerness getting the better of me; I was like a kid in a candy store.
"Super strength and speed, not quite vampire speeds but still fast enough."
I knew werewolves couldn't be the only supernatural beings that existed in the world, you couldn't have one without the other. "Is there any other creatur-" I was cut off by the sound of a grumbling stomach, not mine of course.
"Today's lesion is over princess."
That irresistible devil may care smirk returned to his lips and I couldn't help but stare, regardless of the situation he had gotten me into; he was a sight to behold.
"Wait.." I mumbled "I just have one more very important question to ask you."
He sighed "What is it princess? We don't have all day."
It had taken me a while to come back from the fantasy world, sure I was curious about what I would become, if I even bloody well survived. But I suppose that was life, you live and you laugh but we all eventually die, some deaths are worse than other but in the end we all died.
"If I do end up living through my change...What about after that? What becomes of me? My friends? My family? What if I hurt them?"
His smirk faded into a blank cold expression, one I could barely read. "If you can't control yourself around them, you will have no choice but to sever all ties with them and never see or speak to them again." He paused for a moment to let it sink in. "Even if you can control it, it's not going to matter anyway, once you change we are gone."
He didn't give me a chance to respond, he was already heading towards the front door. Pausing long enough only to look over his shoulder at me.
"Get changed out of those ridiculous clothes and meet me out the front, it's time to go hunting."
