"Since everyone is getting their friends graduation gifts, I got this for you." Minghao took the neatly wrapped box out of his pocket and gave it to Y/N.
The girl graciously took her present and carefully opened it.
She let out a gasp of surprise, "Hao, this is beautiful."
The boy had gotten her a ring as a graduation present. It looked like it was a tied ribbon and it was red in colour.
The girl put it on her pinky and admired it, "Thank you so much."
Minghao shyly smiled and showed her his hand.
He wore the same ring on his pinky finger as well, "We're matching."
Y/N smiled and hugged him, "Thank you so much for being my best friend, Minghao."
He hugged her back tightly, but couldn't help but feel sad. He was just her best friend, nothing more. He had hoped she knew what the ring symbolized. That ring was based off of the Red String of Fate. It was how their strings were connected to each other through their pinky's. This was his confession to her, but unfortunately she didn't understand the hidden message.
Breaking apart from their hug, Y/N thanked him again and went to go find her other friends.
Minghao sat by himself at the table while he watched the person he loved have fun with her friends.

Fast forward to the present, that whole event took place years ago.
He had lost contact with Y/N when high school started. He tried everything to contact her, but nothing seemed to work.
Minghao and his friends were going out to see a new movie. They were going to see Your Name, a Japanese animation that was being shown in China.
They had arrived late to the cinema and when they walked into the theatre, it was already dark.
Minghao spotted four seats available and immediately went there with his friends.
The boy sat down beside a girl who smiled at him and continued to watch the previews.
He smiled back at her and thought she looked familiar.
Trying to figure out who she looked like, Minghao tried his best to focus on the movie.

The lights turned on and Minghao was speechless.
The only thing that would come out of his mouth was, "Wow."
The girl beside him seemed just as touched because she replied, "I agree. Wow."
The two of them turned towards each other, "That was beautiful."
She nodded, "It was so complex as well."
The two of them began to talk about the movie and its storyline as the credits rolled. He was explaining to her the red string of fate and she was explaining to him the different timelines. Minghao's heart wouldn't stop fluttering because the girl was very beautiful and it felt like he was talking to an old friend.
At one point in the conversation, Minghao looked down and noticed the ring on the girl's pinky finger.
She must have noticed because she asked him, "Whatcha looking at?"
A blush rose to the boy's cheeks as he was caught staring at her ring, "Oh it was just your ring. It's really pretty."
The girl lifted up her hand and admired the ring, "It is. The thing is, I don't remember where I got it."
As she moved her hand around, Minghao was able to look at it properly.
A gasp escaped his mouth once he saw what it was.
"Are you okay?" The girl immediately dropped her hand and looked at the boy, trying to figure out what happened.
"Your ring," the boy quietly let out, "I know where you got it from."
The girl titled her head and found his reaction to her ring strange.
Minghao showed the girl the ring on his pinky finger. He took her hand and put their pinky's side by side.
They had matching rings.
"You don't remember me, Y/N?" A sad smile was found on Minghao's face. He couldn't believe that he met her again.
Y/N was taken back and immediately moved back in her seat, "How do you know my name?"
Minghao met her eyes and he could see the confusion in them, "I was your best friend in elementary school."
"Elementary school," she thought.
"Oh!" She relaxed in her seat and told him, "A few days after graduation, I was in a car accident and suffered from amnesia. I don't remember anything from the last few months of elementary school. I'm sorry that I don't remember you."
Minghao immediately softened, "Oh my gosh, are you okay now? Sorry for getting all emotion. By the way, I'm Minghao."
She smiled and nodded, "Can I call you Hao?"
Minghao swore he felt his heart swell up with joy. No one else called him that except for her and he hasn't heard that nickname in years.
The boy nodded and a smile formed on his face.
Y/N smiled back and looked down at her ring again.
She noticed that it was red and looked like a tied ribbon.
"Hao, is the ring suppose to represent the red string of fate?" She asked him as she played with the ring on her finger.
"You finally understand it! I actually got that for you as a graduation gift. I had the biggest crush on you then and this was my way of confessing to you. At that time, you didn't know what the Red String of Fate was so you didn't understand what the ring meant. You just saw it as a gift from your best friend. You did seem to like it so I was glad. What really made me happy was that you are still wearing the ring after all these years. Especially after you suffered from amnesia, you still wore it."
Y/N connected all the pieces in her mind and tried her best to fill up that time of her life she doesn't remember. She looked at the boy and asked, "How did you know about this at such a young age?"
The boy shrugged and played with his own ring, "I used to read a lot when I was younger."
"What a creative way to confess to someone."
Minghao blushed, "I felt something all those years ago and knew we were going to meet again, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. I was part of your past and I hope to be part of your future."
It was Y/N's turn to blush and she just buried her face in her hands, "You're incredible, Hao."
Minghao smiled to himself, "Anything for the girl I love."

anyways, this was based off of my i and the lyric comparison video had me shaking, screaming and crying at the same time. im not even exaggerating, i was so touched.
the red string of fate is such a cool thing so that's why i wanted to write this.
