Breaking The Rules

Needless to say Jerry's performance was a huge flop. Not to mention my dress was in shreds. Yep, I was the subject of his downfall again. Somehow my dress got caught in the slats and was sawed. Looked as if a shark attacked my dress.

Trying to mask my anger I just ordered me another drink and listened to Jerry contemplate about all the things that went wrong duiring his act. It was everyone's fault but his own. I wished he would just suck it up and come to the realization that magic just wasn't for him.

I'd never been happier to get home that night. Tossing my dress into the trash, I slid into my pajamas and fell asleep on the couch watching television. When I woke in the morning my body ached from my odd sleeping position. After a good stretch and feeding my face, I relaxed in the tub.

While I was soaking my mind drifted to that mysterious stranger and I had the sudden urge to visit him. I don't know why but I didn't want to keep away from him. I was like a moth drawn to the flame. I chalked it up as to feeling bad for him due to his situation. I couldn't imagine lying there in a deep slumber with no loved ones visiting or even knew what happened to me.

After lunch, I jumped into my work uniform and decided to pay him a visit before reporting to my job. On my way up I stopped by the gift shop and purchased a cheap flower arrangement and a small blue teddy bear.

I don't know why I did that but I guess the room looked so glumy I wanted to add some cheer to it. Who knows maybe he will wake and at least he'd known someone had cared.

Stepping off the elevator I immediately spotted nurse Casandra which eased my worry. I knew I wasn't allowed to visit him because I wasn't kin, but I think Casnadra felt just as bad as I did over his situation.

Smiling, I walked up. "Hi, remember me?"

"Of course dear".

I wiggled the flowers in front of my face. "I thought I might drop these off and see if there's been any change in his status".

"Oh right dear. Sadly there's been no change nor anyone looking for him. Your not suppose to be here but I guess it will be okay. Poor fellow needs somebody checking on him. Just keep it short".

Thanking her and promising to be in and out I entered his room. Feeling stupid I spoke to him. "Hi. I brought these". I said wiggling the flowers again along with the bear. I sat them on the window sill and eased by his bed.

"I hope you like them. The gift shop here doesn't offer much".

The bruises and scrapes on his face looked better and only made his good looks shine through more.  "I'm sorry for what happened to you and that I couldn't have been more help. I do hope you wake soon, I bet your loved ones are missing you. My names Avery by the way, the girl who found you".

I felt like a complete idiot talking to a strange good looking man whom didn't even know I exsited. That's my luck, I finally meet a tall dark man and he falls into a coma.

"Well I best run, gotta get to work. I'll check back in on you in a few day's. You work on getting better".

Before I left I tucked the blanket tighter around him and fluffed his pillow. On my way out I thanked Casandra and asked if it would be okay if I visited him in a few day's. She said she didn't have a problem with it as long as I kept it short.

I rushed to work in hopes of sharing my news with Lana before our shift started. I found her at the back break table munching on chicken strips drowned in honey mustard.

Taking a seat beside her she grinned. "How'd that hot date go last night?" She teased.

Rolling my eye's I groaned. "I would have rather played in traffic duiring rush hour".

Lana guffawed sending crumbs flying from her mouth.

"Ugh, you pig". I snorted tossing her a napkin.

"That bad huh?"

Lana being my best friend knew my troubles with Jerry. I often chewed her ear off about him. "Not too bad considering my dress looked as if I ran it through a paper shredder by the end of the night".

"That must have been some crazy sex".

Now it was my turn to guffaw. "Hardly. He used me as a prop again and sawed my dress".

Shaking her head, she spoke with a mouthful of chicken. "Honestly Avery I don't know why you continue on with him. You could do so much better. The male customer's practically throw themselves at you".

Grabbing one of her chicken strips, I took a bite and sighed. "It's not that easy Lana. I do love him, I just don't love his selfish ways, childish behavior, and his obsession with magic".

"All I'm saying Avery is maybe you should take a break and test the water's, see what's out there, try some different dick".

True, Jerry's sex was so vanilla but I just couldn't do that to him. I know he has his flaws but there is some good things as well. Trying to make Lana see that I said. "He's taking me to the movie's next weekend".

"Uh-huh". She replied boardly.

Deciding to take the conversation off Jerry and his failures, I brought up my stranger. "So I visited the mystery man again today".

Half grinning she said. "Leave it to you to stalk a vegetable".

"Don't say that". I said wounded.

"I just feel so horrible for him. I mean could you imagine lying in a coma and had no visitors or loved ones missing you?"

"Must suck to be him". Lana said in her normal sarcastic tone. Noticing my hurt she leaned over. "Look Avery, I get it. His situation is shit and you feel responsible for him because you found him. That's normal, but don't get too emotionally attached. He may not recover and if he does he might be a huge dickhead. Didn't you say he was handsome?"

Smiling I replied. "Girl you just don't know. His bruises are healing wonderfully and the man underneath is amazing. Surely cut from the same cloth as the God's".

"Geez, sure you aren't just visiting to sexually assault him while he's under?"

Laughing I tossed a fry at her and sauntered off to start my workday.

Needless to say this stranger became apart of my daily routine. I visited him at least four times a week just to chat and drop off small gifts. There was still no clue as to who he was and his condition remained the same. Before I knew it three months had passed by and he still remained a mystery. Other than Lana I told no one about the visits, especially Jerry. He would flip out for sure.

Just as I was giving up hope on his recovery I received a phone call one morning from Casandra. She was so excited with the news that she rushed it out in a tounge twister. Mystery man had woken.

Since my shift wasn't until that evening I tossed on a sloppy outfit and rushed to the hospital. Casandra greeted me but wore a forlorn expression.

"Oh no, has he went back under".

"No dear but seems he's lost all memory as to who he is, why he's here, just everything. They will be running tests later to see what exactly is occurring".

"Oh" was all I knew to say.

"Is it okay if I visit".

Casandra smiled. "I've filled him in about you. I think it would be fine for a few moment's".

Pretending to swipe invisible wrinkles from my shirt I stepped into the room. "Hi" I croaked.

He looked up and my heart came to a complete stop. Those eye's. Oh my those dark sensuous eye's. Those eye's held things only dreams was made of, yet dark enough to send a tingle of fear down my spine. What secrets they must hold. Seeing him staring at me with a furrowed brow I snapped out of my trance. "Oh sorry" I mumbled taking a step toward him with my hand extended.

"I'm Avery Saunders, the girl that found you".

He gripped my hand snuggly and I promise a buzz shot all the way to my center. Wow no one has ever had this effect on me, not even Jerry.

He grinned showing a perfect set of teeth embedded in a perfect smile. "Thank you miss".

"Please call me Avery". I insisted.

Umm... that voice was like dark chocolate, deep and smooth.

"I wish I could give you something to call me but sadly I can't recall a thing".

Smiling I pulled my hand away and said. "That's okay. I'll just have to give you a nickname until you figure things out".

He grinned that devastating grin once again. "What shall you call me?"

Grinning back I replied. "How about  Mr. Rude".

Giving me a quizzical look he said. "Okay, but I clearly don't understand why that".

Laughing I said. "It was just a joke. As I was aiding you, you was still a bit coherent. I have to wear this hedious uniform for work and you poked fun of it and told me I smelled of cheeseburgers".

His face reddened clearly embarrassed by his behavior. "I apologize. I shouldn't have said that".

"It's not a problem. Already forgotten. I really wish I could be of more help but I've told the police all I know".

We chatted a few more moments then I took my leave after promising him to visit again soon. I also left my number in case he got bored and wanted to talk.

Yes, Mr. Rude wasn't so rude after all or either the trauma he suffered affected his attitude.
