Step, Drag, Step

Hey, guys! While reading this, I recommend that you read a little bit slowly and out loud if possible. I think it gives the poem much greater impact. Enjoy!

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step.

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step.

The rock feels heavier today.

His back aches from the burden.

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step.

He steps with one foot that barely leaves the ground before slamming back onto it.

He drags the other foot forward--too weak to lift it from the floor.

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step.

At home, he embraces the rock.

Not caring about the damage it's doing to him.

In secret, he loves that rock.

He would never willingly drop it.

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step.

But the rock goes with him everywhere.

He sits in the padded pews, pushing his back straight despite the gravity.

The Rock tries to bring him down to the floor, but he grits his teeth against the humiliating force.

Step, step, step, step, step, step, step.

He forces his feet off the ground.

He forces his legs not to cave in.

He looks guiltily at the Rock, but thinks,

I can't leave it.

Step, step, step, step, step, step, step.

He shakes the reverend's hand,

A fake smile plastered on his face.

He can't see the rock, he thinks.

He can't guess I have the rock, he hopes.

Step, step, step, step, step, step, step.

He ignores the guilt that is heavier than the Rock.

He refuses to cry out from the price that comes with the Rock.

He doesn't dare tell the reverend that he even has the Rock.

Step, step, step, step, step, step, step.

He goes home.

He ignores the guilt.

He ignores the conviction.

He ignores it all.

Step, drag, step, drag, step, drag, step...
