Madison was upstairs in her room, but she could still feel the vibrations of the music and hear the laughter and shouting coming from the party downstairs. She was putting the last touches on her make up before going downstairs to join the party. She looked at herself in the mirror, examining her Cat Woman costume with the tight leather body suit and her hair straightened and slicked back. She grinned at her reflection as she pulled on the black Cat Woman mask that completed the look. Then she walked out of her room shutting the door behind her because she didn't want anyone from the party to come upstairs and go through her stuff. As she walked down the stairs she smiled to herself, satisfied at the turn out of people. Her large house was so full of guests she hardly had room to walk around, she looked around the room hardly acknowledging the "Hey Madison" and "Awesome party" she was hearing from numerous different people. Then she spotted her, her silver blonde hair stood out like liquid moonlight in comparison to everyone else in the room and of course she was standing next to that wretched Harmony girl. She stared enviously at Harmony; she too was wearing a tight body suit even though hers was obviously different and made out of something different then Madison's leather costume but she couldn't help but feel jealous because she was the one standing and laughing with Lavender and because looking at her in the tight body suit Madison felt as if she looked like a child in comparison to her. I mean Madison was slender and had small curves but that harmony girl's body looked like an hourglass.
"You know if I were you I would be a bit more discreet when spying on Lavender" Madison didn't even have to turn around to know who was speaking behind her because she already recognized his voice, as a matter of fact he was the only male voice other then her fathers that she recognized.
"I was not spying on your sister" I defended.
Auburn laughed and moved from behind me to my right side.
"Really then what were you doing?" he asked
"Looking at Harmony and making fun of her stupid hair in my mind" I said
Auburn looked in the direction of Harmony and Lavender and he lifted his eyebrows in surprise
"Harmony..." he said in a dreamy like voice
"I didn't notice last time how nice her body was" he grinned mischievously
"Oh no not you too" I complained.
I awkwardly wrapped my arms around my stomach feeling slightly self conscious now.
"She looks happy" Auburn said cautiously as if he thought I might explode at his words, he knew me better then I gave him credit for.
"She used to be like that around me" I said defensively.
"No, she was never like that with you" he shrugged.
I felt anger bubble up in me, I wanted nothing more them to slap him right here and now but with all of my will power I repressed that urge and instead I said,
"Yes, she was!"
Auburn sighed and looked me in the eyes; I noticed that he was wearing his normal black suit not a costume.
"No Madison she was never quite like that with you. Her whole life she has been hungry and you were like a large glass of water and bread, dulling her hunger but never quite filling her up. But since she's never had anything else to eat she would gladly take the bread and water. But then Harmony comes along, and that Harmony girl... she's a full course meal; Lavenders' never going to want just bread and water again." He looked at me with pity in his eyes as he finished.
I was so mad I wanted to scream, but I couldn't, not in front of all these people. So I took my frustration out in another way.
"Your hair looks stupid and you look like an idiot not wearing a costume" I snapped.
He ran a hand over his silvery slicked back hair making sure every strand was neatly in place.
"My hair is not stupid and I am wearing a costume" he said with a cat like grin on his face,
"You always wear that" I pointed to his suit.
"Exactly, I'm Auburn Black for Halloween, I mean what's better then being me" he winked.
"Being me" I teased
"No thanks, I was a ginger last year for Halloween" he said as he walked away laughing and heading in the direction of two sophomore girls who had been eyeing him for the past ten minutes.
I stood there appalled at his words. I am not a ginger! And I am not just bread and water either, I reassured myself.
I looked back over at Harmony and she was now talking to Lavender and Savannah, they were both laughing with her as if they were hanging on to her every word. How come she was a "full course" meal and I wasn't. I mean sure she has a nice body and I guess her face is nice to look at too, but other then that she has nothing. She wears stupid black clothes that look as if she bought them at second-hand store in the Halloween section. She hardly ever dose anything with her hair just leaves it down, I mean it hardly looks as if she combed it tonight. She's always late for class and never once has she turned in homework! Ugh! I felt so frustrated. I went into the kitchen and grabbed a fruity looking drink and went to go sit down on one of the only couches that were available and there was only one space on the couch and it was next to that Christine Martinez girl and some brown haired boy with a cute smile. I sat down next to them and sipped my drink, I tasted alcohol in it but I could have cared less.
"Nice costume Madison" Christine smiled at me.
"Thanks yours too" I mumbled back not really wanting to be seen talking to her. Christine was dressed as a female samurai with a long expensive looking sword at her side. The boy sitting next to her smiled
"Yeah the costume really suits you"
I turned around to take a good look at him. The boy was dressed up as a zombie fake rotting skin and torn cloths but underneath the make-up I recognized his good looking smile and strong chin; it was Andrew Stewart son of the owner of Stewart airlines. I sighed to myself, I would have to be friendly with him or my dad would kill me because you always had to be nice to people who come from good families with good connections, that's what dad always says.
"Thanks Andrew, you look pretty cool yourself" I said reluctantly.
"I know right" he laughed jokingly
"Speaking of cool costumes Chris did you see that girl talking to Lavender black, she was dressed up as a crow or a raven. It was a pretty wicked costume" he grinned.
"Oh! That's my friend Harmony! Whom I was telling you about; you know the one who is my roommate. She's really awesome I have to introduce you to her" Christine gushed.
What the hell! Was everyone and their mother obsessed with Harmony? I shot Christine and Andrew looks of pure loathing, forgetting all about trying to be nice. They seemed to have got the hint because Christine stopped talking right away and when Andrew tried to say something she quickly elbowed him in the side shutting him up before he could say anything.
"So...you wanna hear a joke?" Christine said breaking the awkward silence.
I didn't respond I just stared at her with a slightly annoyed expression.
"Ok...how do you get Pikachu on to a bus?" she continued but I still just sat there and stared at her blankly.
"You poke-him-on."
Andrew busted up laughing from behind his cup of soda as he attempted to hide his laughter.
"Get it Madison poke-him-on you know like Pokemon" she looked at me hopefully, but instead of laughing like she expected me to, I groaned and stood up and walked away from the couch leaving my drink behind.
I stomped back upstairs back into my room slamming the bedroom door shut behind me. The first thing I did was throw myself onto my king sized bed and buried my face into my pillows. It wasn't fair that everyone liked Harmony so much, and it especially wasn't fair that Lavender liked Harmony so much. I turned over onto my side and ran my hands over the silky pink sheets I've had since my freshman year. They where the oldest thing in the room other then me because when you have money you don't need to keep things for very long you could just throw them out and buy new stuff. But I would never throw these away, never. I griped a hand full of my bed sheets and shut my eyes as the memory of the day I bought them came flooding back to me crystal clear as if it happened just yesterday...
It was a little over two years ago, a few days before our first day at ST. Maria's. A younger Lavender sat in the corner of the room her long legs crossed and her long hair pulled back into a stylish ponytail. I stood in the middle of the room pulling my new pair of silky pink sheets onto my bed.
"Don't you just love these?" I asked Lavender
"Don't you think their a little cliché?" lavender said
"What makes you say that?" I asked as I finished making the bed.
"Well for starters their silk, and pink" she laughed.
I rolled my eyes at her.
"Come on try it out and then you can make fun of them" I told her as I sat down on the bed. Lavender stood up and slowly walked over to the bed, then sat down next to me
"It feels like sitting on any other bed" she said plainly
"No you have to lay down on them" as I spoke the words I laid down onto to bad felling the smooth silk on my arms and legs. Lavender laughed as she followed my example and shut her eyes as she moved her hands across the silk. I stared at her long silver lashes and I wondered how much longer she would go with out wearing any make up, I mean starting Monday we would be freshman in high school. Lavender slowly opened her eyes to look at me.
"Ok your right, it is nice" she smiled.
"Its way more mature then my old ones too" I grinned back at her.
"What do you mean by that?" she asked.
"Well we are going to be in high school now and you never know if I might want to invite a boy over or something" I blushed.
Lavender awkwardly looked away then and it was silent for a moment till she finally said.
"Do you like anyone Madd?"
"No, I haven't met anyone yet" I said truthfully.
"I mean it's kinda hard to find someone you like when we go to all girls schools. What about you? Do you like anyone?" I asked.
"Madison..."
"Yes?"
"Can you keep a secret" she asked.
"Yes of course" I said.
"Well you see I'm not sure if I'll ever have a crush on a boy" she said in a low voice.
"Why not?" I asked
"Because...because I don't think I like guys" she finally said.
"Don't be silly if you don't like boys then who would you like..." I didn't understand if she couldn't like boys then she would never fall in love...unless...
"Are you saying you like girls?" I asked as the realization of the situation hit me.
"I don't know" she shouted in a very un-Lavender like way and she then buried her face in her hands.
"Hey it's ok" I said as I pulled her hands away from her face so I could look into her large aqua eyes.
"Sometimes I just think if...if I could try it...try being with a girl I would know if I like them" she said.
"Well have you ever tried being with a guy to see if you really don't like boys?" I asked
"A few months ago I tried kissing that Alex boy from across the street, but it...it didn't feel right at all" she finished.
"Ok you don't like guys, and you have never kissed a girl right?" I asked awkwardly
"Never" she said.
I took a deep breath, Lavender was my best friend and I would do anything for her and here she was confused and obviously wanting help or advice from me so I had to help her in the only way I could.
"Ok why don't you try kissing me" I finally said.
Lavender looked generally shocked at my words, now that was rare.
"Its fine Madd you don't have to do this for me" she said
"No its ok, I want to help you with this. It's what a best friend should do"
"Are you sure?" she asked skeptically
"Positive" I said.
Then Lavender sat up on the bed and I did the same. She stared into my eyes and then slowly ran on of her hands through my orange curls. I felt my heart start to beat faster but I didn't understand why. Then Lavender pressed her lips to mine...
I kissed her back, my lips moving fast against hers.
It was a strange feeling at first, her lips where warm and soft on mine. I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it but I did, I really did.
I put my hands on her waist pulling her body closer to me. We remained kissing like this for some time, but then all of a sudden Lavender pulled away. It was like being woken up from a good dream by someone throwing a bucket of cold water on me.
"So..." I said thickly.
"Women...I defiantly like women" she said breathlessly...
Madison opened her eyes and shook the memory out of her head. She got off her bed and walked back downstairs.
This was her party and she was dammed if anyone could stop her from having a good time.
